Saudi Railway Receives 38,000 Female Applications for 35 Haramain Train Driver Jobs

The Saudi Railway Polytechnic (SRP) has initiated the second phase of hiring female drivers for the Haramain High-Speed Train, receiving an overwhelming response of 38,000 applications for just 35 vacancies. This recruitment is part of a larger social transformation under Saudi Vision 2030, which has been steadily opening up new professional avenues for women since 2016.

The Haramain High-Speed Railway, operational since 2018, connects the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, providing vital transport for pilgrims and visitors. Eligible applicants for this phase must be Saudi citizens between 22 and 30 years old, possessing necessary academic credentials and English proficiency. Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive training program comprising 483 hours of technical education and 674 hours of practical sessions before obtaining their train driving licenses.

This initiative builds on the successful first round in 2022, where 28,000 women applied and 34 were eventually trained as the Middle East’s first female train drivers. Additionally, Renfe KSA, the train’s operating company, has trained over 800 Saudis for various roles, with women now making up over a third of its workforce — further establishing the company’s reputation as a gender inclusion pioneer in the Kingdom.
