Salutations to Dr. Iftikhar Ali introducing SINO-PAKISTAN LABORATORY FOR
NATURAL PRODUCT CHEMISTRY at the Department of Chemistry, Karakoram
International University, Gilgit-Baltistan
Article by Nasima Shaik
Sino-Pakistan Laboratory for Natural Product Chemistry is equipped with the
sophisticated scientific instrument, known as High-speed counter-current
chromatography (HSCCC). This instrument is first time available in Pakistan and only
available in Karakoram International University, Gilgit.
Dr. Iftikhar Ali is currently serving as Chairperson Department of Chemistry at
Karakoram International University Gilgit. Your tireless efforts and unwavering passion
are truly commendable. We deeply appreciate the remarkable work you have done. Your
achievements have not only brought pride to Gilgit-Baltistan but have also set a shining
example for the entire nation. Your dedication is an inspiration to all of us. Your selfless
contribution has paved the way for a brighter future inspiring generation to come.
Dr. Iftikhar Ali made significant contribution to the establishment of the Sino Pakistan
laboratory for Natural products research at Karakoram International University,
promoting academic excellence and Sino Pakistan cooperation in the field of natural
product research. Dr. Iftikhar Ali is a renowned researcher and academician who has
worked extensively on natural products and their pharmacological
applications. His research focus areas include organic synthesis, phytochemical
investigation, and high-speed counter-current chromatography. The establishment of
the Sino-Pakistan laboratory for natural products research at Karakoram International
University highlights the collaborative efforts between Pakistani and Chinese
researchers in the field of natural products. Dr. Iftikhar Ali who spearheaded the
establishment of the Sino-Pakistan lab during his time as a postdoctoral fellow in
Shandong Province, China (2019-21). Dr Iftikhar Ali discussed the idea of setting up the
laboratory at KIU with officials from Qilu University of Technology and Shanghai
Pechoin daily chemical company. Due to the Covid 19 outbreak, the idea was not
immediately realized. However, an MoU was signed between the parties when pandemic
restrictions were lifted in 2021. Finally, the laboratory was established and officially
inaugurated on 20th October. The Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Attaullah Shah
inaugurated the Sino-Pakistan lab at KIU. The highly sophisticated instrument
known as high-speed counter-current chromatograph (HSCCC) was donated by
Shanghai Pechoin daily chemical to the Department of Chemistry, at Karakoram International University. Advantage of the HSCCC include convenient operation, gradient
elution, great sample load, high separation efficiency, high purity, high recovery rate, etc.
The established laboratory shall focus on the following primary research areas.
1. Medicinal Plants: Research on the regional unique flora, exploring their medicinal
properties, phytochemicals, and potential applications.
2. Natural product chemistry: Isolation of bioactive compounds from natural
sources.
3. Pharmaceutical Development: Development of new drugs and therapies using
natural products as leads.
4. Ethnopharmacology: Investigation of traditional medicine practices and their
significant validation based on the phytochemistry.
These research areas may serve as a foundation for the lab's scientific investigation,
driving innovation and discovery in the region.
Dr. Iftikhar selfless act of providing a state-of-the-art laboratory is truly inspiring and has
greatly benefited us. This laboratory is an excellent resource for our growth and
developments providing us with hands-on experience and exposure to cutting-edge
technology. The laboratory has had significant impact on our learning experience
providing us with a platform to explore, experiment and innovate. We have gained
invaluable knowledge and skills which will undoubtedly benefit us in our future
endeavors. I would also like to extend my appreciation to China for their support in
this endeavor. The collaboration between Dr. Iftikhar Ali and partners from China has
been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition and we are grateful for their
involvement.
