The Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Sciences (BSEd-Sciences) program under the College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA) concluded their year with a memorable celebration, the BSEd Sciences Teambuilding 2024. The event, held under the theme "Bonding Through Sciences: Celebrating the Year's End with Strength, Camaraderie, and the Joy of Christmas", took place on December 21, 2024, at the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Retreat House in Barangay Mercedes.

This teambuilding event brought together BSEd-Sciences faculty members and students for a day filled with activities designed to foster collaboration, unity, and festive cheer.

The event included various activities designed to engage students and foster camaraderie. One highlight was the Laro ng Lahi, which encouraged students to participate in traditional Filipino games and compete in various challenges that promoted teamwork and sportsmanship.

Another significant segment of the event was "Heart Speak," featuring the Program Adviser, Associate Professor Esther T. Lim. In her insightful message, she shared valuable advice and reflections, inspiring students to embrace resilience, unity, and a growth mindset as they move forward in their academic journey.

The BSEd Sciences Teambuilding 2024 was a resounding success, made possible through the organizational leadership of the Pre-Service Teachers (PST) of BSEd-Sciences. This event was also a testament to their efforts with the dedication and hard work of the BSEd Sciences students including the funds they raised during their successful Horror Booth at the ZSCMST Palaro 2024. This leaves participants inspired and ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead.

LOOK | MATHulungin Outreach: Building Foundations for Young Learners at Zambowood Daycare

On December 6, 2024, the BSED Mathematics students, as part of their field study requirements, conducted an outreach program for the daycare students of Zambowood Daycare Center. The theme of the program was “Building Foundation: Shaping Young Minds for Numeracy.”

The program started with an invocation, followed by an opening message and an icebreaker. During the icebreaker, the learners sang and danced gleefully to the nursery rhyme “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.” A total of 40 learners, along with their daycare adviser and parents (who were outside the classroom), participated. The students were given interactive notebooks with various activities, while the teacher received a gift bag containing manipulative instructional materials for learning shapes and numbers.

Four (4) student teachers taught the class by using flashcards. The flashcards featured numbers with fruits, which the teachers read aloud slowly with the learners. There were also flashcards containing shapes with colors. The student teachers assessed the students by having them draw lines to connect the numbers to the corresponding number of fruits and by asking them to name the shapes.

Although the BSED Mathematics students conducted this program as part of their field study requirements, they also aimed to share numeracy knowledge with the young learners. They ensured the activities were engaging and made sure the daycare students were fed.

The program lasted for 45 minutes and concluded with the distribution of certificates and the delivery of closing remarks.

The Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) made history by securing 7th overall place at the 2024 National Intercollegiate Genetics Quiz Contest (NIGQC), held from November 25–29 at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). The event, part of the National Biotechnology Week, brought together top universities in the country to compete in genetics, science, and biotechnology.
Representing ZSCMST were Adrin P. Andung, Lorainne Grace C. Lazareno, and John Fergie Orong, senior students from the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Sciences program, accompanied and mentored by their coach, Associate Professor Esther T. Lim. Her mentorship was key to their success, helping the team excel in a competition dominated by BS Biology majors from leading institutions. ZSCMST was the only state college and the only team with competitors from an education program.
The competition included a Quiz (team and individual), Essay Writing, Extemporaneous Speech, and BioTechTok, with the Quiz making up 60% of the overall score. In the individual Quiz, all three ZSCMST participants placed in the top 15, with Andung and Lazareno ranking 14th and Orong 15th out of 33 contestants. Andung also earned a historical 4th place in the Essay Writing Contest.

This achievement was made possible through the collective support of the ZSCMST administration, led by OIC President Dr. Roderick Trio, Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Alvin Reyes, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rachel Lauriga, and CELA Dean Dr. Armand H. Lee. Their encouragement and belief in the students laid a strong foundation for this remarkable accomplishment.

ZSCMST’s participation in this national event highlighted the potential of education students to excel in the sciences. Central to this success was the guidance of Ms. Esther Lim, whose mentorship and dedication empowered the participants to perform at their best. Her role was pivotal, as she not only imparted knowledge but also instilled confidence in the team. This milestone reflects the synergy between institutional support, Ms. Lim's mentorship, and the determination of the students, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence in education and science.

As the 5-day celebration concluded, the participants carried home a wealth of memories, lessons, and opportunities gained from the competition. Reflecting on the event, Ms. Clara Isabel Almoga, Vice President and Membership Committee Head of the UPLB Genetics Society, remarked: “After four years since the last NIGQC, it has been remarkable to witness the passion and brilliance of individuals and organizations united by biotechnology. Together, let us continue to replicate passion, transcribe excellence, and translate brilliance—all for the love of Genetics and Science!” Beyond accolades, the NIGQC experience fostered personal and academic growth, camaraderie, and a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of science and biotechnology.

LOOK | The BSEd Science Students Present Their Research at Cebu Technology University in Danao City, Cebu

The BSEd-Science 3rd-year students, Ms. Frewiling Jay Amaca and Ms. Sitti Nur Rabiatul Malik, alongside their co-researchers and research adviser, Ma’am Micah Ezra C. Aquino of the College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA), presented their research titled “Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge of Thermodynamics and Its Application to Environmental Challenges” during the 3rd National Sustainability Conference, held at Cebu Technological University, Danao City, Cebu, from November 25-27, 2024. The conference, themed “Sustainable Futures and Innovation for the New Philippines (BAGONG PILIPINAS),” aimed to inspire and collaborate with different sectors, highlighting the importance of sustainability in building the nation's growth.

Ms. Frewiling Jay Amaca, Ms. Sitti Nur Rabiatul Malik, and their co-researchers discussed how Pre-service Teachers can apply their understanding of thermodynamics to real-world environmental challenges. Their research emphasized the significance of applying academic knowledge to address pressing issues, such as environmental concerns we currently face. One of the key goals of the event is to find sustainable solutions for emerging problems and innovate shared ideas to create strategies for the developmental growth of the Philippines.

Their work not only showcases the innovative spirit of the next generation of educators but also aligns with the conference’s theme of fostering sustainable futures for the Philippines. It’s also inspiring to see the students working with their research adviser, Prof. Micah Ezra C. Aquino. This collaboration highlights the importance of mentorship and guidance in research and the success of their work. Their achievements inspired peers and educators alike, reminding us of the role of research and education in creating positive change.

The BSEd-Science students’ participation in the 3rd National Sustainability Conference truly showcases their talent and academic prowess, highlighting discipline, excellence, and humility. They have contributed to sharing their discovery for the betterment and innovative sustainable measures of the Philippines.

The MASTS 2024 held its two-day competition on November 25-26, 2024, featuring Indoor and Beach Volleyball events.

For Indoor Volleyball, the games took place at the Buenavista Barangay Hall, where John Rey Casten, a Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English student, and his team fought hard to keep the ball in play. They managed to secure a win in their first game. Unfortunately, they couldn't sustain their momentum and lost the subsequent matches.

Meanwhile, Beach Volleyball matches were held at Dao, Pagadian City. Representing the school were Andrew D. Lumayon from Batsilyer ng Sining sa Filipino and Mark Gabucan from the Bachelor in Technology and Livelihood Education Major in Home Economics program. Despite their determined efforts, their team was unable to secure a win.

When asked about their performance, Mr. Lumayon shared, “Nakakalungkot kasi nire-represent namin ang school, then wala man lang kaming na-win kahit isa... so bawi na lang next time.”

It was the first time both Mr. Lumayon and Mr. Casten participated in the MASTS competition. Mr. Casten reflected on the experience, saying, “It is very overwhelming because it was my first time joining the MASTS. Syempre, enjoy din [rin].”

Both players expressed gratitude to their coach, Mr. Regan C. Sitoy, for his encouragement and support during the games, especially after their losses.

Today, we honor the life and heroism of Andrés Bonifacio. He was known as the Father of the Philippine Revolution and the leader of the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (K*K), a secret revolutionary organization within the Philippines during the Spanish Colonial Period that sought to overthrow the Spanish Colonial Rule.

Let us reflect on his words

These words express a strong sense of patriotism, honor, and selflessness. These words encourage people to love their country with devotion and honesty, guided by faith in God, a sense of patriotism, and a desire to put the nation's interests ahead of their own selfish desires—encapsulating the spirit of the Philippine Revolution, which arose from a desire for freedom and self-determination.

May these words continue to inspire Filipinos in their pursuit of freedom and sovereignty.

The Artistic Photo Competition is an event to execute the skills and talents of capturing exceptional photos that tells a story during the Opening Ceremony of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences (ZSCMST) PALARO 2024, each of them is given an individual theme and creativeness of taking the best shot. On November 19, 2024, all participants were asked to submit their entries before 12 p.m. at the Public Information and Communication Office (PICO).

Princess Del Mundo and Reignier Consas were the College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA) representatives for the Artistic Photo Competition.

The ZSCMST MCLL Gymnasium came alive on November 16-17, 2024, as it hosted an intense and exhilarating Badminton Tournament. Attended by the esteemed College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA) coach for both Women and Men’s Badminton teams, Coach Ma. Arlene Fernan, together with various coaches from different colleges, to guide and motivate their respective players. Supervised by Prof. Daisy Templanza, the focal person for the badminton sport event, the two-day tournament was a testament to the players' dedication and determination to excel in the game.

The competition featured single and double player categories for both men and women, with every match consisting of two sets. Players displayed mastery in utilizing different racket grips and strategies, with their powerful smashes often deciding the outcome of matches. Their energetic performances highlighted their eagerness to secure victories for their respective colleges.

The first day of the tournament focused on the elimination rounds, which served as a bracketing stage for the sets of matches. Four different colleges — namely, the College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CFMS), College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA), College of Management and Technology (CMT), and College of Maritime Education (CME) — competed fiercely to secure their place in the semi-finals. Each game was a thrilling spectacle with players demonstrating their agility, precision, and strategic thinking.

On the second day, the intensity reached new heights as the semi-finals and championship matches took center stage. Players gave their all, with their passion and skill evident in every rally and smash. The supporter was on the edge of their seats as the best teams battled it out for the coveted titles.

In the Women’s Category, College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CFMS) emerged as the champion, with the College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA) claiming the first runner-up spot, and College of Management and Technology (CMT) securing the second runner-up. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Category, the College of Maritime Education (CME) took the championship title, with College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CFMS) as the first runner-up and College of Management and Technology (CMT) rounding out the podium as the second runner-up.

Among the notable players, CELA’s Men’s Team featured two formidable doubles teams: Omar R. Arip & Timothy Josh Demetillo in Double Set A, and Omar R. Arip & Clark Miño Beraña in Double Set B. Nusrin Usama represented the college in the Men’s Singles category. On the Women’s Team, CELA showcased impressive talent with Jepril Rose C. Rugay & Danilie A. Apas forming the double team for Set A, while Ganima Salih & Milhada Asjali played in Double Set B. Milhada Asjali, Ganima Salih, and Sheena Sahi competed in the Women’s Singles category which who all displayed strong determination and competitive spirit.

The tournament not only highlighted the players’ exceptional badminton skills but also fostered unity and sportsmanship among the participants. The event was concluded success, leaving athletes and their coaches alike with memories of marking another chapter in the sports programs.

𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐒 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒 | 𝐌𝐠𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐠-𝐚𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐚 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐀, 𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐡𝐨𝐤 𝐬𝐚 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐒 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

Ang Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS) 2024 ay nagbukas noong Nobyembre 24, 2024 na may temang, “MASTS Games 2024: Overcoming adversity; Celebrate the Richness of Culture and Promoting Inclusivity.” Ginanap ang napakalaking aktibidad sa Pagadian City at ang J.H. Cerilles State College ang siyang punong-abala. Kabilang sa mga aktibidad at larong pinakahinihintay ng lahat ay ang Literary Competition na siyang kinabibilangan ng mga patimpalak na Pagsulat ng Sanaysay, Dagliang Talumpati, at Pagkukuwento.

Ang naging pamantayan sa Pagsulat ng Sanaysay ay ang mga sumusunod:

Nilalaman: Kaugnayan sa paksa, Kalinawan sa paglalahad, Orihinalidad - 50%
Organisasyon: Kaisahan, Pagkakaugnay, Diin - 30%
Mekaniks: Wastong gamit ng mga salita, Bantas, Baybay, Pagpili ng mga wastong mga salita - 20%

Ang naging kalahok sa paligsahan ay si Binibining Jenelyn Salazar na nagmula sa Batsilyer ng Sekondaryang Edukasyon sa Larangan ng Filipino. Ayon kay Bb. Salazar nang tanungin kung ano ang masasabi niya tungkol sa kaniyang karanasan bilang unang beses sumali sa MASTS Games, “Ang masasabi ko ay napakaganda ng experience ko sa MASTS na may halong excitement at kaba ngunit masaya dahil nairaos ko naman ang kompetisyon na aking sinalihan.” Makikita rin sa kaniyang tindig noong nasa Subanen Hall na, kung saan ginanap ang paligsahan, ang kaniyang tiwala sa sarili at sa kaniyang kakayahan, at ang karangalang itaas ang pangalan ng Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST).

Sa nangyaring paligsahan sa Pagkukwento, ang naging pamantayan ay:

Kakayahan sa pagbigkas: Tiwala sa Sarili, Kaalaman, Kasanayan at Kalinawan - 40%
Kahusayan sa pagbibigay buhay sa papel na ginagampanan ng mga tauhan sa kuwento - 40%
Hikayat - 20%

Ang naging kalahok sa nasabing paligsahan ay si Ginoong Abdulmojib Esmail, na nagmula sa Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Sciences. Binigyan niya ng buhay ang kuwentong “Ala-Sais ng Hapon.” Ayon pa kay G. Esmail nang tanungin kung ano ang masasabi niya sa mga naging kapwa kalahok niya, “Although we are from different schools and are competing for a spot, they are still friendly.” Dagdag pa niya na, “I am thankful because I was the one who represented our school and ... because of this competition I made friends with participants from different universities.” Tunay na kahit sa loob ng kompetisyon ay nananatili pa rin ang kagandahang loob ng bawat isa, at ang pagiging palakaibigan na siyang sentro ng tema ng nasabing MASTS 2024.

Ang pangatlong kompetisyon ay ang Dagliang Talumpati na ang pamantayan ay ang mga sumusunod:

Nilalaman: Kaugnayan sa paksa, Kabuuan, Kaayusan at Kalinawan ng Diwa - 40%Paglalahad: Tinig, Pagbigkas - 40%Tikas O Personalidad: Tindig, Tiwala sa sarili, Kilos o tuwirang pakikipag-ugnayan - 20%

Nagmula sa Batsilyer ng Sekondaryang Edukasyon sa Larangan ng Filipino na si Binibining Shineth Dawn Ann Dolorican naman ang kalahok sa nasabing paligsahan. Ang naging katanungan ay tungkol sa kung ano ba ang nararapat na katangian ng isang pinuno batay sa nangyayari sa ating lipunan ngayon. Maraming mga naging kapwa pantas sa paligsahan at maraming magagaling na siyang patunay na ang naturang paligsahan ay mataas ang antas at hindi laro lamang.

Hindi man pinalad na makasali sa top spots ang mga naging kalahok ay isa pa ring karangalan ang maisama sa MASTS 2024 at madala ang pangalan ng ZSCMST sa tagisan ng kaalaman at kahusayan. Lubos ding pinagpapasalamat ng mga kalahok ang kanilang makabuluhang karanasan sa kanilang coach na si Dr. Darwisa Asaali na siyang naniwala sa kanilang kakayahan at nagbigay ng kaniyang buong suporta at aruga sa kanila.

𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐒 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒: 𝐁𝐒𝐄𝐝-𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬

On the 25th of November 2024, the MASTS 2024 Charcoal Rendering Competition was held at the Tausug Hall in Pagadian City. A College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA) student, from the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics, Mr. Adrian A. Pepito, participated the said competition.

On the competition participants were only allowed to use a black charcoal pencil—and the use of white charcoal pencil would result to the disqualification of the participants. Each participant was given a picture as his or her basis and was only given four (4) hours to complete the portrait.

Mr. Pepito bagged the 17th place out of the 24 participants in the event and despite not obtaining any top spot, he said when asked about what he felt, “...ang ginawa ko na lang is embrace and sabi ko, at least I did my best, I did my job to support our school at ayon, wala akong disappointment sa self [din] kapag uuwi.” But this fulfillment will not happen without the help of his supportive and caring coach. Mr. Pepito said in an interview that he was introduced by Ma'am Joni Czarina-Lantaya to Ma'am Carmina Bucoy.

Mr. Pepito has been participating in MASTS games for three years but when asked about his experience, he said, “Hindi na bago sa akin... pero nandoon pa rin 'yong feeling na kakabahan ka kasi iyong mga magiging kalaban mo architect, mostly Fine Arts na students, tapos geniuses... ...so overwhelmed but at the same time masaya kasi may opportunity na nag-open para sa akin.”
