𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐈𝐍 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 | 𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗨𝗘𝗟𝗔 𝗡𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗔 𝗗𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗟𝗔 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗡𝗨𝗦 𝗔𝗭𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗔𝗚𝗔 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗡

On this day, year 1832, one of the Academy’s notable alumni, MARCELO DE AZCÁRRAGA Y PALMERO, the first and only Spanish Prime Minister born of Filipino descent, was born in Intramuros, Manila.

He entered the Escuela Nautica de Manila (presently PMMA) before being sent by his father to Spain to continue his military studies. He became a Spanish soldier-politician and rose to ranks to become the Prime Minister of Spain following the restoration of the Spanish monarchy. He served as Prime Minister three times: 1897, 1900–1901, and 1904–1905. During his retirement at the age of 72, he was given the Toison de Oro, or Order of the Golden Fleece, the highest possible distinction given to a person in Spain, for his tireless defense of the Spanish Monarchy and for keeping Spain in relative peace.

Two major roads stretching from the districts of Tondo to San Miguel were named after him, “Calle Azcarraga”, but it was later changed to “Claro M. Recto Avenue” after the Filipino Independence.

It is with great honor that we announce the upcoming oath taking and incorporation rites of the PMMA Class 2028 to be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the PMMA Parade Grounds with the 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲, as represented by 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹, 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀 (𝗨𝗩𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗔), 𝙐𝙎𝙚𝙘 𝙋𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙤 𝙈. 𝙇𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙯𝙤 as the guest of honor and speaker.

This activity is a recognition of the Probationary Midshipmen and Women’s commitment and determination in their journey towards becoming future maritime professionals. The ceremony shall serve as formal transition of the brave and tenacious 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘦𝘴 from civilian life to the rigorous and demanding education and training at this institution. It is also a culmination of their one-month orientation and indoctrination program – a period aimed to instill discipline, leadership skills, and Academy core values.

You are about to witness the "few and the proud" soon to become members of the PMMA Corps of Midshipmen.

They will emerge as stronger, more determined individuals, fully equipped to face the demands of a maritime career and to carry on the noble tradition of serving our nation with distinction.

Starting with a simple decision, a person becomes a midshipman, and PMMA molds him into a noble and virtuous leader for himself, his family, for God and our country.
