The Miscalculation of Marcos-Romualdez Government—Duterteism is Here to Stay

In the high-stakes political arena of the Philippines, the Marcos-Romualdez regime appears to be making a catastrophic miscalculation. They may wield every government instrumentality—through threats, bribes, and influence—to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte or convict former President Rodrigo Duterte on allegations of extrajudicial killings. They may believe they have the upper hand, controlling the judiciary, legislature, and bureaucracy. But here lies the fallacy: removing the Dutertes from political power will not erase Duterteism.

Duterteism is no longer just a name or a political ideology tied to one family. It has become a cultural force, deeply rooted in the consciousness of millions of Filipinos. It is an expression of the collective will of a people who value strong leadership, decisive governance, and a no-nonsense approach to justice and order. By targeting the Dutertes, the Marcos-Romualdez government isn’t just fighting a family—they are waging war against the deeply ingrained beliefs of the majority.

The irony is that in their attempt to consolidate power, the Marcos-Romualdez alliance is unwittingly laying the groundwork for their own undoing. Their overtly political maneuvers are sowing seeds of resentment among Filipinos who see through the machinations of a government more concerned with silencing its perceived rivals than addressing the nation’s pressing issues. The move to vilify the Dutertes will not weaken Duterteism. Instead, it will strengthen it, embedding it even deeper into the national psyche.

It is clear that this administration’s reliance on political gangsters, leftist opportunists, and unprincipled operatives has further exposed its desperation. The voices they employ to attack the Dutertes lack credibility, their arguments reek of self-interest, and their antics are alienating the very Filipinos they seek to sway. What the Marcos-Romualdez regime fails to grasp is that the Duterte legacy does not live in Malacañang or in Congress—it lives in the hearts of ordinary Filipinos.

This government has two choices: recalibrate and reconcile with the Duterte legacy or double down on a strategy that will only exacerbate their troubles. If the latter prevails, they should brace themselves for the consequences. The more they attempt to dismantle the political foundation laid by Duterte, the more unstable their own regime will become. Every misstep, every act of political overreach, will further shake the ground beneath their feet.

If President Marcos Jr. and his allies cannot swallow the bitter pill of reconciliation, then they should, at the very least, stop making politically suicidal decisions. Instruct their opportunistic minions—many of whom are tied to communist factions and political mafias—to seal their mouths and cease their provocations. Because every word uttered against the Dutertes is a reminder to Filipinos of what Duterteism stands for: a clear contrast to the inefficiency, political opportunism, and indecision of this administration.

The Marcos-Romualdez government should understand one thing—erasing the Dutertes from politics does not erase the idea of Duterte. That idea is now embedded in the culture, the identity, and the aspirations of a people who will not easily forget the strength and resolve it represented. And so, every time this administration falters—and falter it will—it will not be the Dutertes who haunt them but the very Filipinos they claim to govern.

The writing is on the wall. Ignore it at your peril.
