THERE'S SOMETHING MASSIVE HIDDEN UNDER SAN JUAN CITY

Nestled beneath the bustling streets of San Juan City, Manila, lies a hidden treasure: El Deposito. This massive underground reservoir, constructed in 1882 by the Spanish colonial government, stands as a testament to engineering prowess and historical significance. It is one of the oldest water reservoirs in the world.

As Manila expanded during the Spanish colonial period, the need for a reliable water source became increasingly urgent. El Deposito, with its immense capacity of 15 million gallons, was designed to meet the growing demands of the city's population. Its construction was a monumental undertaking, requiring skilled laborers and advanced engineering techniques for the time.

The underground reservoir held military strategic importance. During the Philippine Revolution, the Katipunan attempted to seize El Depósito from Spanish colonial authorities in the Battle of San Juan del Monte in 1896 and it was held by Filipinos during the Philippine-American War. It was used as an arsenal; first by the Americans during their colonial rule, then by Imperial Japanese forces as they occupied the Philippines in World War II. It also served as a pulmonary hospital housing tuberculosis patients and as a firing range. El Depósito was recaptured by Allied Forces in 1945, but it later fell to disuse after Philippine independence from the United States in 1946.

Today, El Deposito remains a fascinating and accessible tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the underground chambers, marvel at its intricate architecture, and learn about its rich history. The reservoir's preservation efforts have ensured that this important landmark continues to captivate the imagination of locals and tourists alike.

Lechon, derived from a Spanish word for roasted suckling pig is one of the most popular dishes in the Philippines. The slowly-roasted suckling pig is usually stuffed with lemongrass, tamarind, garlic, onions, and chives, and is then roasted on a large bamboo spit over an open fire.

It is traditionally served whole on a platter, at celebrations and festive events such as weddings and Christmas. Once the meat is properly roasted and falls off the bone, people tend to eat every part of the pig, and the crispy, reddish-brown, crackling skin is especially beloved.

THE BEST PLACE TO VISIT IN SOUTHEASTASIA

As described by Lonely Planet, Siargao is a tropical paradise known for its quality surfing, which includes the Cloud 9 break, regarded as one of the best waves in the world. Surfers can take a boat out to Rock Island or Daku, or ride the left reef break at Stimpy’s. Not quite ready for that yet? Surf lessons are available for all levels, then make time to see the island beyond the waves.

Enjoy live music performances at local bars and cafes, such as the Extension or Strum, ride a motorbike out to the North to visit caves, or go to a yoga class and take an ice bath. Whatever you decide, expect to be welcomed warmly into the local community.

NEW MANILA AIRPORT: LAND DEV DONE BY DECEMBER 2024, TO START CONSTRUCTION IN 2025

The New Manila International Airport (NMIA) project is a game-changer for the Philippines, a world class airport that will be developed in phases, with an initial capacity of 35 million passengers annually, and a target of 100 million passengers per year, once fully complete.

As the largest single investment in the country's history, this ambitious project is the long-awaited solution to the crippling air traffic congestion that has plagued Manila's existing airport. By providing safe, efficient, and reliable air travel services, the new airport will not only boost economic growth but also enhance the Philippines' reputation as a premier tourist destination.

The New Manila international airport will help create jobs, improve Bulacan’s local economy and its surrounding regions, attract investment, and boost tourism. Spanning an impressive 2,500 hectares, the project will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including a modern terminal building, ample parking, and a bustling airport city.

The airport will help in reducing congestion at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, as well as other airports in the Greater Capital Region such as Metro Manila and surrounding regions, to serve current and future passenger demand. It is part of a wider infrastructure project aimed at building new expressways and mass transit systems to help decongest Metro Manila.

With construction already underway, the New Manila International Airport is poised to take flight, transforming the Philippines into a global aviation hub.

At present, progress for the land development works is at 77% according to San Miguel Corporation. NMIA is targeted to commence operations in 2027.

UPDATE ( Aug 28 ): SMC announces delay in construction. Read here: https://www.bworldonline.com/top-stories/2024/08/27/616238/construction-issues-to-push-back-operations-of-bulacan-airport-to-2028/

TEXAS WAS ONCE CALLED "NEW PHILIPPINES"

Before the Philippines gained independence from Spain, Manila was a shining jewel in the Spanish crown. Its success as a colony inspired the creation of similar settlements in other parts of the empire, including Texas. In the 18th century, Texas was part of New Spain, a vast territory under Spanish rule.

Dreaming of replicating the Philippines' success, Spanish missionaries and officials began referring to Texas as the "New Philippines." This moniker reflected their hopes for a thriving colony in the Americas. The Franciscan missionaries in both regions shared a common goal: to evangelize the indigenous populations.

Antonio Margil de Jesus, a prominent Spanish missionary, is credited with first using the term "New Philippines" to describe Texas in a 1716 letter. He envisioned a future where Texas would become a prosperous and devout colony under the Spanish Crown. The term "Nuevas Filipinas" officially appeared in a 1718 document addressing the governor of Spanish Texas.

However, the dream of a "New Philippines" in the Americas was short-lived. The decline of the Spanish empire led to instability in New Spain and Texas. While the friars had envisioned a prosperous and peaceful colony, the name "New Philippines" became somewhat ominous, foreshadowing the revolutions and conflicts that would follow.

In the 19th century, Texas, like the Philippines, experienced significant political upheaval. It became part of Mexico and then declared independence, eventually joining the United States. As Texas's history unfolded, its connection to the Philippines faded into the background. The once-promising "New Philippines" became simply Texas, a name derived from a Native American term.

TOP 2 IN THE WORLD'S BEST CITIES FOR NIGHTLIFE

As described by Time Out, a night out won’t drain your bank account in the Philippine capital, which came out as the most affordable city on the list to go out in at night. Not only that, but Manila’s nightlife scene earned an impressive 78 percent quality score, too, with locals describing the city as ‘beautiful’, ‘bright’ and ‘alive’ after hours. I myself, I attest that Manila’s nightlife has the edge for its late-night food markets like Divisoria and the lively districts of Poblacion and Bonifacio Global City.

PH 🇵🇭 RANKS 11th GLOBALLY WITH MOST SKYSCRAPERS

While the Philippines might not immediately come to mind when thinking of towering structures, the image reveals an exciting story. With a total of 128 skyscrapers, the Philippines stands tall among its Southeast Asian neighbors, showcasing its growing urban landscape and economic development. This signifies a burgeoning skyline and a nation on the rise.

The majority of Philippine skyscrapers fall within the 150-200 meter range, indicating a focus on mid-rise developments. However, the presence of some structures in the 200-300 meter category hints at the potential for even taller buildings in the future.

Compared to its Southeast Asian counterparts like Thailand (131 skyscrapers) and Indonesia (136 skyscrapers), the Philippines holds its ground, demonstrating a competitive spirit in the skyscraper race.

Looking ahead, the Philippines has the potential to become a major player in the global skyscraper scene. With ambitious urban development plans and a growing economy, the country is well-positioned to witness a skyscraper boom in the coming years. Exciting times are ahead for the Philippines, and its skyline is set to become a testament to its aspirations and achievements.

GREATER CAPITAL REGION RAILWAY SYSTEM

DOTr is cooking up a mega railway plan to turn Metro Manila's traffic nightmare into a sweet dream. They're aiming to link up a whopping seven rail systems – that's LRT-1, LRT-2, MRT-3 (they're already running), plus new kids on the block like MRT-4 (still in the planning stages), MRT-7 (under construction), the MRT-9 Subway (also under construction), the NSCR North and South (both being built), and even the long-haul PNR South (still on the drawing board).

If everything goes according to plan, by 2030, folks from Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, and of course, Metro Manila, could be zooming around on trains instead of sitting in endless traffic. That's DOTr Undersecretary for Rails Jeremy Regino's vision, anyway. Let's hope it becomes a reality!

Operating lines by 2030:

LRT 1 (Operational)
LRT 2 (Operational)
MRT 3 (Operational)
MRT 4 (Soil testing)
MRT 7 (Under construction)
MRT 9 Subway (Under construction)
NSCR North (Under construction)
NSCR South (Under construction)
PNR South Long Haul (On study)
Clark Airport Link (Under construction)

07/08/2024

Thank you, FintechAlliance.Ph , for this meaningful 2-day event that brought together industry giants such as GCash, Maya, Dragonpay, and all major banks in the Philippines. The discussions were insightful and highlighted several key points:

Challenges in Fintech Adoption

Unbanked Population: Approximately 47% of Filipino adults remain unbanked as of 2021, indicating a substantial gap in financial inclusion.

Digital Divide: Only 70% of the population had access to the internet by the end of 2022, with connectivity issues more prevalent in rural areas.

Digital Literacy: The country ranks 57th out of 63 in digital literacy, according to the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking 2023.

Data Privacy Concerns: Over 70% of Filipinos express concerns about the security of their personal information online, which undermines trust in fintech platforms.

Strategies for Improvement

Infrastructure Expansion: Increasing internet pe*******on and improving connectivity in rural areas are critical. The government's National Broadband Plan aims to provide 100% internet access by 2025.

Financial Education: Implementing nationwide financial literacy programs could enhance understanding and trust in digital financial services. Current efforts include the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' (BSP) financial education initiatives targeting schools and communities.

Data Security: Strengthening cybersecurity measures and regulatory frameworks to protect consumer data is essential. The National Privacy Commission (NPC) continues to enforce the Data Privacy Act of 2012 to safeguard user information.

Collaborative Efforts: Partnerships between fintech companies and traditional banks can leverage established networks to reach the unbanked. For example, GCash's collaboration with local government units has facilitated financial aid distribution to underserved populations.

The Path Forward

Innovation and Support: Encouraging a supportive environment for fintech startups can drive innovation. The Philippines' startup ecosystem ranked 59th globally in 2023, highlighting the need for more investment and mentorship programs.

Economic Impact: By improving access to financial services, the Philippines could significantly boost its economy. The Asian Development Bank estimates that financial inclusion could add up to 14% to the country's GDP by 2030.

Addressing these challenges is crucial for the Philippines to fully leverage the benefits of fintech. Empowering Filipinos with access to financial services can spur economic growth, reduce poverty, and enhance overall financial well-being.

The Mighty Shield that is Sierra Madre

The Sierra Madre, the Philippines' longest mountain range, stretches an impressive 540 kilometers (340 miles) along the eastern coast of Luzon island. Its towering presence acts as a formidable barrier, significantly reducing the strength of typhoons that traverse the Pacific Ocean.

A Natural Wall Against the Elements

• PAGASA has consistently emphasized the Sierra Madre's crucial role in typhoon mitigation. The mountain range acts as a natural bulwark, dissipating the destructive energy of these storms.

• Reduced Intensity: Studies indicate that typhoons passing through the Sierra Madre experience a notable decrease in wind speed and rainfall intensity. This translates to less severe impacts on communities downstream.

• Protecting Millions: The Sierra Madre safeguards millions of Filipinos living in Northern Luzon, including major urban centers like Metro Manila. Its presence lessens the risk of widespread devastation, saving lives and property.

Beyond Typhoon Protection

The Sierra Madre's ecological significance extends far beyond disaster mitigation:

• Lungs of Luzon: It houses vast tracts of primary and secondary forests, vital for maintaining biodiversity and regulating the region's climate.

• Water Security: The mountain range is a crucial watershed, providing freshwater resources to countless communities and agricultural lands.

• Cultural Heritage: It holds immense cultural and spiritual value for indigenous communities who have inhabited the region for centuries.

A Call to Action

Despite its invaluable contributions, the Sierra Madre faces significant threats, primarily deforestation and illegal logging. These activities compromise its ability to protect communities and its rich biodiversity.

Let's raise awareness about the Sierra Madre's vital role and support initiatives to conserve and restore this precious natural treasure. By protecting the Sierra Madre, we safeguard not only Northern Luzon but the entire Philippines.

Cable Car in Antipolo? DOTr confims PH’s first cable car system will soar in 2028

Hold onto your hats! The Philippines is set to get its very first cable car service, and it's aiming for liftoff in 2028 in the scenic Rizal province.

During the Build Better More Infrastructure Forum in New Clark City, DOTr Undersecretary Timothy John Batan dropped the exciting news. He shared that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) wrapped up a pre-feasibility study earlier this year for a cable car system connecting the MRT-4 Taytay station and Antipolo.

“The project looks promising. We just need to dive into some more details, which we’ll be tackling by the end of the year,” Batan mentioned to reporters.

By mid-2025, a full feasibility study will kick off to nail down the costs, passenger capacity, and other specifics. If everything goes according to plan, the project could be up for bidding by late 2025 or early 2026.

“We’re looking at a construction period of about two years. So, if we can award the contract by 2026, 2028 could be our year for takeoff,” Batan explained.

Rizal’s mountainous terrain makes it an ideal spot for this sky-high adventure. Here are some benefits of having a cable car system:

- Passenger Capacity: Modern cable cars can transport up to 3,000 passengers per hour per direction, making it a highly efficient mode of transport.
- Reduced Traffic: By providing an alternative route, cable cars can help decongest heavily trafficked areas.
- Tourism Boost: Offering stunning aerial views, cable cars can attract tourists, boosting the local economy.
- Accessibility: This mode of transport can improve access to remote or difficult-to-reach areas. Cable cars can travel at speeds up to 8 meters per second (around 28.8 km/h), offering a swift ride over urban congestion.
- Sustainable Transport: Cable cars produce minimal pollution and noise compared to traditional road vehicles. Cable cars run on electricity, which can be sourced from renewable energy, reducing the carbon footprint.

And guess what? Baguio is also eyeing its own cable car project, with local government support and DOTr backing.

So, get ready for a thrilling new way to travel and see the Philippines from new heights!

Colliers' latest report identifies key investment opportunities beyond Metro Manila and Cebu. Government infrastructure projects and decentralization efforts are creating new economic centers in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

BULACAN: The nearing completion of MRT-7 and the New Manila International Airport (by 2028) positions Bulacan as a major residential hub with improved connectivity. This infrastructure boom is expected to attract landbanking initiatives and development of masterplanned communities.

CAGAYAN DE ORO: Its strategic location, strong business environment, and growing outsourcing sector make Cagayan de Oro a magnet for investors. The upcoming expansion of Laguindingan Airport further strengthens its appeal for residential and hotel development, solidifying the city as a key investment destination in northern Mindanao.

ILOILO: Iloilo's booming business scene is attracting national developers for upscale residential projects beyond the main business district. Upcoming infrastructure like the Ungka II Flyover enhances connectivity, making Iloilo a prime location for masterplanned developments. Its skilled workforce, strong infrastructure, and proactive government solidify its position as a competitive investment hub in Western Visayas.

DAVAO: Davao City's real estate market is thriving with national developers creating integrated communities. Government investment in infrastructure strengthens its appeal as a residential hub. Developers can explore resort-themed projects alongside traditional housing options. Davao's rise as a MICE destination will attract hotel operators, further diversifying the property landscape beyond 2024.
