The Vizconde massacre case was one of the true crime stories that defined the 1990s in the Philippines, leading to the trial of the century and spawning three movies years later. Several perpetrators were already sent to prison, yet the case is still unsolved to this day.

Based on a tragic true crime, the story tells of a controlling father who couldn't bear to lose his daughter to the man she married. In 1966, a Filipino exchange nurse was one of 9 women inside a townhouse in Chicago where Richard Speck committed mass murder. Fortunately, she was able to escape and she would later testify in court, pointing to him as the culprit.

British national Steven Alston Davis was on vacation in Angeles, Pampanga when he met a young Filipino dancer named Evelyn Bohol. He immediately fell in love with her and rescued her from poverty, marrying her two years later, not knowing that she would later conspire to have him murdered.

For almost a century since it was established in 1912, the Reserve Officers Training Corps or ROTC was mostly mandatory for male college students. It was the unfortunate murder of University of Santo Tomas sophomore Mark Welson Chua that led to the program ceasing to be a college requirement, all because he exposed the corruption and abuse within his university's ROTC unit.

In 2017, a teenage student named Kian Delos Santos was found dead with gunshot wounds to the head in a dark alley in Caloocan, Metro Manila. The suspects, three police officers who were in Kian's neighborhood for an anti-drug operation, claimed the boy was a drug runner who had fought back against them, but evidence would later surface that this wasn't the case at all.

But as tragic as this was, she became a martyr, inspiring many other Filipinos to fight back against dictator Ferdinand Marcos' regime, eventually restoring democracy to the nation.

2021 was a great year for Stories After Dark, particularly because it became a Spotify Exclusive podcast, and for that I will forever be grateful to Spotify for seeing the potential in the show. I know I haven't been as reliable as I should be in terms of episode release, especially recently, and that's due to several factors. It's been very difficult coping with many things going on in my personal life. Challenges at my full-time day job. Health issues. A couple of deaths in the family. Languishing. Anxiety. All with the very real threat of COVID in the background. But the bottom line is that I would never want to compromise episode quality just so I can be on schedule.

Whenever I would post an Instagram story apologizing for the delay in episode upload, I would usually get a few messages telling me that they understand and that Stories After Dark's episodes are always worth the wait. To all those people again and to everyone who share the same sentiment, thank you. To all of Stories After Dark's listeners, thanks for taking the show to greater heights in 2021 and I wish to be able to thank everyone for the same thing this 2022.

On January 18, 1982, the first Manila International Film Festival opened at the Manila Film Center, a 25-million-USD building erected in Pasay City by former first lady Imelda Marcos in hopes that Manila could rival Cannes as the world capital of cinema. The film festival itself that year was mostly considered a success, but legend has it that its venue is haunted by the vengeful spirits of those who tragically lost their lives during the building's construction.

Fell down a rabbit hole when I read about the tiny Momo Challenge detail in the Christine Silawan murder case. Which made me do an episode on the Momo Challenge itself, which then led me to an interview with these ladies. The highlights of our conversation will be the next episode, out tomorrow on Patreon (free and available to the public) with a snippet published on Spotify and everywhere else. I know that this is an episode format that's different from what everyone's used to, which is why I'm putting it on Patreon. But to be honest, the main thing I love about working on this podcast is all the research I do on topics I'm interested in and/or I think are important, so I really enjoyed interviewing actual research professionals on the effects of social media posts about suicide-related content (like the Momo Challenge) particularly on children, a subject that's very important today. Back to regular programming with the episode after this one. 😉
