๐’๐๐Ž๐‘๐“๐’ ๐๐„๐–๐’ | USJ-R Jaguar Cubs Keep Streak Alive, Overpower UCLM Junior Webmasters

The USJ-R Jaguar Cubs conquered the UCLM Junior Webmasters, 64-62, to notch their 9th win in a heated CESAFI Season 24 Boysโ€™ Basketball matchup on November 14, 2024, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The game got off to a rough start for the Jaguar Cubs as the Junior Webmasters seized the early advantage, scoring the opening points and jumping out to a quick lead. However, the Jaguar Cubs roared back with tenacious defense and sharp ball movement, tightening their man-to-man coverage and forcing crucial turnovers to disrupt the Junior Webmastersโ€™ momentum. With swift passing and strategic plays, they found open looks at the basket, clawing back into contention. The Junior Webmasters countered with fast breaks and smooth pick-and-rolls, keeping the score tight and the tension high. Yet, the Jaguar Cubsโ€™ on-point shooting and relentless hustle ultimately proved decisive, closing the first half with a 37-30 advantage.

The second half began with a determined push from the Jaguar Cubs, executing impressive ball movement and sharp passes to set the pace. The Junior Webmasters tried to steal the momentum with aggressive defense, but the Jaguar Cubs countered and quickly evened the game at 45-45. With fast breaks and fluid ball rotations, the Jaguar Cubs fought to regain the lead, but the Junior Webmasters fired back, edging ahead with their offensive surge. As the clock wound down, both teams exchanged blows, each possession more critical than the last, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. In the final moments, the Jaguar Cubsโ€™ stifling defense and clutch shooting made all the difference, holding off the Junior Webmasters and sealing the victory, 64-62, in a heart-stopping finish.

Following their narrow triumph over the UCLM Junior Webmasters, the USJ-R Jaguar Cubs are riding high in CESAFI Season 24. They will next face the CRMC Baby Mustangs in their final game before the semi-finals on November 16, 2024, at the Cebu Coliseum, with their sights set on advancing.

๐‡๐ˆ๐†๐‡๐‹๐ˆ๐†๐‡๐“๐’ | Write, That Thou Mayst Be Eternal: The 2nd Josenian Creative Writing Workshop

On November 13, 2024, the second Josenian Creative Writing Workshop was successfully held by the Josenian Literary Club at the SEM Audio Visual Room (AVR), Basak Campus.

Sharmaine May Dini led the registration procedures prior to the event's commencement. Niles Isak C. Almirante then gave a brief introduction and Samantha Kate Sencio offered the opening prayer before club president Princess Aicel Carin gave the opening remarks.

Shortly after, an introduction was given to the first guest speaker, Mr. Jay Bryan La-ag, a poet from Barili, Cebu. Before starting the lecture, Mr. La-ag asked the audience what they believed poetry's purpose was. Writing and reading poetry, he continued, "takes us back to what it means to be human," and "poetry is primarily a form of self-expression."

Throughout his talk, Mr. La-ag focused on the essence of love, the beauty of poetry, and the idea of it all coming down to feeling, experiencing, recalling, and honesty. Furthermore, he talked about the key features and definitions of various kinds of poetry, including sonnets, elegy, euphony, and Bisaya poetry, and asked the audience to volunteer to read aloud examples of each.

Mr. La-ag further emphasized that he prefers writing in Bisaya because he believes that there is beauty in writing in our mother tongue. After providing examples of Bisaya writing, the majority of which are his own, Mr. La-ag highlighted the differences between an AI-generated and human-written poem by pointing out that "ChatGPT does not have the ability to recall emotions." Following his talk, Mr. Mark Kenly Oray and Ms. Mencae Marae T. Sapid gave him a certificate of appreciation, which was then followed by an exercise for the club members.

Kyrel Jaren Casipong led an icebreaker in the afternoon called "Sinking Ship," which warmed the attendees for the next exercise and guest speaker, Mr. Alden Arsen. The second guest speaker enlightened the attendees on the writing fiction by discussing its elements and techniques. Throughout his discussion, Mr. Arson stressed the value of persisting through difficulties while writing and publishing a work of fiction. He also discussed how to create a fictional story and what to consider when writing one.

Following that, Ms. Mencae Marae T. Sapid and Mr. Mark Kenly Oray distributed certificates to the members and guest speaker. Some of the event's agenda were unfinished due to time constraints, which prevented the members from completing their lecture exercise, but the event nonetheless created a lasting impression of enthusiasm on everyone in attendance that fueled their desire to continue writing and reading, ultimately elevating literature's beauty.
