24/06/2024

What started as an online racket during the pandemic has now turned into two full-fledged bookstores featuring a few million books. The brainchild of Kathleen Claire Alonzo, Bookchigo recently opened its second branch in Cordova in Mactan.

Kathleen’s goal is to sell books at low prices to make them more accessible to children, and the family fully backs this initiative. Her father, Atty. Janijay Alonzo, said the mission is to flood the country with books to create a population of readers.

Bookchigo Cebu is separated into two spaces: a warehouse where different titles are sold at P200 per kilo for a minimum of three kilos and a cafe where these are priced per piece. It’s serious browsing and buying books at the warehouse, but the cafe is not your ordinary bookstore.

The idea is to create a magical place where children and adults can discover or rekindle the love for reading printed volumes. There are nooks with bean bags or desks to encourage customers to start reading in comfort. These are also designed to be “Instagrammable” or the best spots for taking photos. A popular area is the President’s table with rows of hardbound works as backdrops, as a way of starting the young onto lofty dreams.

Visitors can take a break from serious book hunting and get some needed refreshments as coffee and non-coffee drinks as well as crepes are sold in the cafe.

The upper level in the high ceilinged space features a tunnel of books that encloses a Victorian desk and wooden chest.

Bookchigo combines book with chigo, the Japanese word for children, which are the bookstore’s target clientele. Some 70% of Bookchigo’s products are children’s books.

The Cordova bookstore carries around a million books, while the first branch in Silang, Cavite has twice the capacity.

*For context, the 3 kilos we bought contained nine titles in sizes ranging from big to small.
