TW: sexual harassment, police violence, transphobia
WE STAND WITH AWRA!
Last June 28, Awra Briguela and her friends went club-hopping in Poblacion, Makati. Unfortunately, they were met with a harasser who deliberately touched sensitive areas of Awra’s friends. In hopes of defending her friends from the traumatic incident, Awra confronted the harasser but was responded with punches. In the heat of the fight, the police handcuffed Awra and she was brought to prison. Several clips have been circulated and numerous stories have taken the story out of context.
The truth is: AWRA ONLY WANTED TO DEFEND HER FRIENDS.
The injustice that Awra experienced is one of the many recurring narratives of discrimination that women, transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people face daily. With only Awra being detained and the sexual harassers roaming unpunished, this is a testament that women and TGNC individuals are at greater risk, as they are demonized and are assumed of their worst in all situations.
We denounce any and all forms of sexual harassment, gender-based violence, and attacks on the rights of women and LGBTQI individuals! Being a woman and having fun in a public bar are not and will never be an invitation for violence. UP Babaylan echoes the call that the perpetrators of sexual harassment be imposed of deserving sanctions and penalties. Sexual harassment does not have a place in our society!
We condemn how the Makati City Police Station tackled the situation at hand. Time and again, the Philippine National Police has proven itself as a macho-feudal institution borne of patriarchy. They manhandled Awra while she was trying to explain what has transpired — that she and her friends are victims of harassment. They filed a case against Awra while they allowed the harassers to go scot-free. They chose not to listen to the side of the women who were harassed. Undeniably, at their core are misogyny, sexism, transphobia and homophobia! now!
We criticize the several news outlets that have mainstreamed the incident without giving full background and context to the story. News 5 aired a skewed narrative, even getting a statement from one of the harassers. Abante News has treated this as nothing more than a showbiz gossip material to gain social media engagements, ignoring the fact that the issue needs appropriate handling. This is a blatant disregard to journalism ethics on integrity and sensitivity. Media outlets should assume their social responsibility towards justice. The voices of those discriminated upon are the voices that should have been amplified, while the harassers should not have had any chance to spew out lies and forward their transphobic and misogynistic narratives.
We call on the My Makati officials to speedily address and steer this blatant case of misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia into justice. None of these would have happened if the Makati LGU upheld the Safe Spaces Act of 2019. We demand that this does not happen again within and outside their jurisdiction. Mayor Abby Binay, protect your constituents! Implement the Safe Spaces Act!
We urge the immediate passage of the SOGIESC Equality Bill! As a member of the LGBTQI community, the police denied Awra of her right to due process. The narrative of Awra, among other stories of gender minorities being discriminated against, is a declaration of inequality and injustice towards women and people of diverse SOGIESC. So long as we let these patriarchal institutions take control and allow sexism be the hegemonic voice, we cannot move forward.
Justice for Awra and the victims of sexual harassment! Stop the attacks on women’s and LGBTQI rights!
