"Your job is to keep running. To keep up the flow, follow three simple rules:

1. Run for yourself. You only need to judge yourself against yourself.

2. Run what you can. Anything you run is better than running nothing.

3. Be proud of your runs. Lots of people go longer and faster, but none could have done your work for you."

—Joe Henderson, Better Runs

Running on air, anyone?

We'd like to thank Kinetics Advance Physiotherapy for allowing us to take the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill for a spin! We really could run on this amazing treadmill for much longer than we could pound the pavement, and the best news is, our knees and ankles would never complain.

For appointments or inquiries, contact Kinetics at 028871409 or 09154260680. You may also send them an email at [email protected], or connect via Facebook (bit.ly/altergphfb or Instagram (bit.ly/altergphig).

Their wonderful physiotherapists would certainly assist you! Big thanks again to everyone!

Ready to face the new year yet?

"Run with your heart instead of your mind. When you run with your mind, you think of the things you can and can't do. But when you run with your heart you forget about what you can't do, and you just go out and do it."

"Running is alone time that lets my brain unspool the tangles that build up over days—work-related grief, everyday family-life frustration, and the occasional bit of deeper-seeded crap that gets labeled depression and the like. I run, pound it out on the pavement, channel that energy into my legs, and when I'm done with my run, I'm done with it. I'm a happier and healthier person now."

Every step is a blessing. :)

"No one has any guarantee of being physically intact at this time tomorrow. So whining about a run is like whining about having too much money. Every drop of sweat from every run is a gift. Never complain about running."

Workouts that target the middle ground between going all-out and running comfortably--often referred to as "tempo runs"--should be part of your weekly routine, whether you're running for fitness or looking to set a personal record. They build both slow- and fast- twitch muscle fibers, which leads to gains in speed AND endurance.

If you need help adding midrange runs to your week: we give you tips on Personal Best: http://goo.gl/f74MwY, page 19.

"We live in an 'instant' society, with instant fast food, instant diets (to lose the weight gained from the instant food), instant Internet, instant cell phones, pagers, email, and 24-hour news. That outlook sometimes filters down to running. There are, however, no instant results in running. Seeking instant success typically leads to disaster. Better to steadily put in your long runs and look for far-off improvement. In fact, if you did nothing but long runs you would improve and be more likely to stay injury free. Our sport is a patient, long, and drawn-out affair that requires, above all – more than talent, altitude, or a new pair of shoes – determination, dedication, and discipline."

It may not be winter this side of the world, but are we ever busiest these days! Habits are even tougher to regain than fitness, so let's help each other stay on top of our routines. Stick to at least three runs per week, supplemented with two to three cross-training or strength workouts.

Read more here:

Winter can be tough for runners. The glut of holiday celebrations and getting-ever-scarcer daylight can derail your training routine. But sticking to a consistent program keeps you fit and energized--and makes injury less likely come spring.

"Starting is hard, and not just for a new runner overcoming inactivity for the first time. Long-timers also wage a daily battle against inertia. One of its laws is that a body at rest wants to keep resting. The hardest step in running is the first one out the door. The toughest mile is the opener. You can trick yourself into starting by saying, 'I'll try a single slow mile and see how I feel then.' Get through that trial mile and you almost always keep going at a better pace - until the day’s planned run is complete. Another law of inertia has gone to work: a body in motion tries to keep moving."

"It will hurt. It will take time. It will require dedication. It will require willpower. You will need to make healthy decisions. It requires sacrifice. You will need to push your body to its max. There will be temptation. But, I promise you, when you reach your goal, it's WORTH IT." —Author Unknown

"The real victory isn't the act of smashing through the tape and crossing the finish line; it's not seeing your name first on the list or standing on the highest step on the podium. None of that can make your legs shake with fear and excitement.

Victory, the real victory, is what is deep down inside each one of us. It's what we can’t believe will ever happen despite all the training and will on our part, and yet it is what finally happens. Despite all the thinking and brandishing of calculators, after so many hours of preparation, after so many days of training, of telling ourselves that we can win, or simply finish the race, it is as if something in our unconscious is constantly telling us that it is impossible, that it would be too wonderful, too brilliant, too incredible for it to become reality. That what we want to achieve is only a dream. And when you cross the line, when you look behind and see that it is for real, that you are flesh and blood, and that what seemed possible only in dreams has become real, you realize that that is the real victory.

Winning isn't about finishing in first place. It isn't about beating the others. It is about overcoming yourself. Overcoming your body, your limitations, and your fears. Winning means surpassing yourself and turning your dreams into reality."

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RUNNING IN 14 WORDS

-Build step by step.
-Push yourself, but not too hard.
-Learn.
-Keep it fun.

The rest is details. Some of those details are important, but a runner should not get wrapped up in them to the degree that they distract him or her from these four simple principles.

"I wasn't born with any innate talent. I've never been naturally gifted at anything; I always had to work at it. The only way I knew to succeed was to try harder than anyone else. Dogged persistence is what got me through life. But here was something I was half-decent at. Being able to run great distances was the one thing I could offer the world. Others might be faster, but I could go longer. My strongest quality is that I never give up. Running as far as possible was one activity where being stubborn as a bull was actually a good thing. It suited my personality."

Life is not a race. Neither is an ultramarathon, not really, even though it looks like one. There is no finish line. We strive toward a goal, and whether we achieve it or not is important, but it's not what's most important. What matters is HOW we move toward that goal. What's crucial is the step we're taking now, the step YOU'RE taking now."
