Today is the 126th Anniversary of first unfurling of the Philippine flag. So I went to Samonte Park at Cavite City to join the commemoration. To my surprise, there were no people. I was lately informed that the said occasion was cancelled due to "inclement" weather. I was there the whole afternoon and the weather was fine. So I just took pictures of some markers as a memory. I also took a selfie with the replica of Teatro Caviteño.

Martial law happened because of the growing power of the Communist Party of the Philippines through its armed wing, the New People's Army. We were not alone in that threat. Vietnam fell into Communist hands. Malaysia also had its own local Communist insurgency. Indonesia also had its own Communist problem. Martial law was written into the 1935 Constitution. It was regulated under the 1973 Constitution, and then it was neutered in the 1987 Constitution. So what's wrong with martial law and calling it the "dark days" of the Philippines? Stop insisting on your narrative of the story as if your narrative alone were the truth. Why not delve into the other side? The story of those who obeyed the Martial Rule but suffered cruelty at the hands of the Communists or the Moro rebellion: the soldiers who died to keep Mindanao from seceding from the Republic of the Philippines; the soldiers who set foot on the West Philippine Sea; the authorities who obstructed the arms dealings of the People's Republic of China and the NPA: Imelda and Bongbong Marcos went to China and talked to Deng Xiaoping, asking not to support the CPP-NPA-NDF to preserve the Republic and its cordial ties with the Communist State. Martial law history is not a monopoly of the history of those who are victims alone. It should be told wholeheartedly so our young generation will have a better picture of the overall situation of our country in that era. What is happening even to this day is that these so-called historians are still telling the other side of the story. That is not fair, and I call that intellectual dishonesty. Yes, fifty-one years have passed. And you are still telling your side of the story over and over again to gain sympathy from the younger generation that your actions during that time should be seen as heroic. Activism and disobeying authority are not heroic at all. Let's include rebellion. Fifty-one years have passed, but did the Filipinos buy the idea of communism? The desiperados were not missing because the government committed the atrocities. They were missing because the NPAs killed them in broad daylight en masse and buried them alive in mass graves all over the country. It has been long their propaganda that the government did that. That propaganda no longer holds water, as the rebel returnees were the ones who revealed the atrocities perpetrated by the Communists during that time. Most families of those who died without a trace have awakened to the truth that their loved ones were killed not by the Marcos government but by the CPP, NPA, and NDF of the late Joma Sison, who made the order to exterminate suspected government spies. These families had been made to believe a lie, so they will hate Marcos even though he has been long since dead. That is the reason why the son was made President of this Republic despite the smear campaign that even you, as a historian, have joined in. Shame on you!

BUWAN NG WIKA PA MORE!

Stop calling my native language as a mere DIALECT! Cebuano is a LANGUAGE distinct from other LANGUAGES that exists in the Philippines. So is CHAVACANO and WARAY WARAY. No Filipino who is a native TAGALOG can UNDERSTAND Hiligaynon or Ilocano like a DIALECT. A DIALECT is a language with different variations and could be understood by the same native speakers. Examples are the Tagalog of Bulacan can understand the Tagalog of Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, or Quezon. That is a DIALECT. The Cebuanos of Cebu can understand Cebuano speakers of Bohol, Northern Mindanao, and even Davao. That my friend is a DIALECT. The Taclobanon Waray can understand the different dialects of Waray Waray in Samar! Misay and Uding are two Waray Waray words for cat. That is a DIALECT! AGAIN, a DIALECT is variation of a LANGUAGE and can be understood by the same native speakers of that LANGUAGE. Bicol is not a dialect of Tagalog because the two could not understand each other. The language of the Dumagats of Rizal and Quezon could not be understood by the Igorots of Mountain Province. Neither the language of the Manobo could be understood by the Ivatans of Batanes. THAT IS BECAUSE THEIR NATIVE TONGUES ARE LANGUAGES AND NOT DIALECTS.

The difference.

Aginid: Bayok sa Atong Tawarik by Jovito S. Abellana 1952

Our Story

When I was a little boy, I wondered how my country started. Schools back then have subjects about history. Line upon line I started to learn the beginnings of my people. It fascinated me so much that even as an adult I still search for answers about our past. My inspiration is my daughter. I want her to grow up knowing the history of our ancestors. And by so doing will have a better future ahead.
