A study published in Nature last April 3, 2024 revealed, using a new approach to meta-analysis, previously ‘hidden’ and extensive effects of Ocean Warming, Ocean Acidification, and its combination on several characteristics of invertebrates and fish.

𝗩𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛 | Ocean Warming, Acidification’s ‘hidden’ effects revealed through meta-analysis
By Jay Adrian Lotivio

With the rising issue of climate change comes its rising consequences, with buzzwords such as ‘greenhouse effect’ and ‘global warming’ taking front and center in the latest of its in/tangible effects to our environment. While it is fortunate that we humans have formed several adaptations centering on sustainability and climate resilience, the same cannot be truly said for the other inhabitants of our planet: our flora and fauna. Specifically, marine fauna are one of the most susceptible to the slightest changes in anything, owing to the environment’s long-standing stability both in terms of temperature and water composition.

However, the effects of Ocean Warming (OW) and Acidification (OA), two of the three greatest climatic threats to marine organisms characterized by changes in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), are much more significant and dangerous than previously thought, according to a study published in Nature last April 3, 2024.

The study evaluated 217 other studies that delved into the effects of OW, OA, and its combined effects on 10 biological metrics: survival, growth, calcification, metabolism, reproduction, physiology, behavior, development, biomechanics, and biodiversity—the process of which is called meta-analysis.

đ—œđ—» 𝗗đ—Čđ—Čđ—œ đ—Ș𝗼𝘁đ—Č𝗿𝘀 đ˜„đ—¶đ˜đ—” 𝗔đ—șđ—Żđ—¶đ—Žđ˜‚đ—¶đ˜đ˜† đ—źđ—»đ—± đ—šđ—»đ—°đ—Čđ—żđ˜đ—źđ—¶đ—»đ˜đ˜†

Generally, OW increases species energy costs and decreases its survivability, while OA‘s impacts focus on changes in water composition. However, the study expressed the current difficulty in summarizing studies due to a surprising difference of results—studies on one metric (e.g., physiology) have resulted in both positive and negative (directional) changes—with conflicting results attributed to publication biases, differences in data pooling methods, etc. In the case of meta-analysis, study results are often represented by positive and negative values that are added together. When summarizing these conflicting results, adding negative and positive results together would cancel out the values, “hiding” potentially extensive results. With this, it has been quite confusing to actually accurately and precisely determine the effect of OW and OA on a specific metric.

One thing that studies have done to counteract this ambiguity is assume a positive effect is the result, except when a negative effect is clearly seen. For example, ambiguous effects on the changes in shell composition are assumed to have a positive effect on the physiology instead of an equally likely negative effect. The study emphasized the danger of this ambiguity, as this may lead to an underestimation of the real impacts of climate on organisms; such changes in shell composition may have actually had a negative effect instead. When doing this on a species-by-species basis, pooling these data in the levels of whole ecosystems would also prove disastrous.

‘𝗩đ—Č𝗼-đ—¶đ—»đ—Žâ€™ 𝗼 đ˜€đ—Œđ—čđ˜‚đ˜đ—¶đ—Œđ—»: đ—„đ—Č𝘀𝘂đ—č𝘁𝘀 đ—Œđ—ł đ˜đ—”đ—Č đ—Šđ˜đ˜‚đ—±đ˜†

In counteracting this, the study looked at another avenue for measuring the metric. Instead of looking for positive or negative changes, the study measures “absolute” changes, or the sign that there were any changes to the metric at all. The study reasoned that any change, whether positive or negative, would still pose significant changes in the organism. Using this method, the study found that OW, OA, and their combination affected almost all biological metrics on fish and invertebrates when compared to measuring directional changes.

As an example, the study identified three climate driver levels, or Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) which modeled environmental values comprising pCO2 and Temperature: the levels are RCP 6, RCP 8.5, and extreme level. When the study measured directional effects, it found that under RCP 6, the study found that it did not induce directional change in invertebrates, but when measuring absolute deviation, the study found that there were changes to the metric, hidden because of the fact that directional changes were the ones being measured.

Other than that, the study also reported that as the climate driver level increases, more and more significant changes were recorded when fish and invertebrates were exposed to OW, OA, and its combination. The study also suggested the use of pCO2 exposure indexes, defined as how much the specific environment is exposed to pCO2, hand-in-hand with pCO2 control values, considering the diversity of the marine environments across the world and that control values might not be accurate enough.

The study also documented, for the first time, the pattern of effects of combined OW and OA, with an antagonistic trend being observed. This means that perhaps OW and OA may actually have conflicting effects with one another.

Focusing on the organisms themselves, the study also found that organisms in early life stages displayed more directional and absolute deviations, and organisms’ acclimation time to their environment posed little to no effect.

The study also reported a key avenue for further research, that climate effects on biodiversity resulted in a reshuffling of the environment rather than species loss, meaning that studying the effects on whole ecosystems themselves would give us a bigger picture on the effect of these climate-change-related events in our marine ecosystems.

The results of this study shine a greater light on the true effects of climate on our environments, and provide many avenues for further research on the topic. Other than this study marking a big step towards our understanding of the natural world, it can also take root as a sign: one to also give our efforts on environmental sustainability and green advocacies down to the depths of the big blue sea.

: Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) are banned effective today July 22, as ordered by President Bongbong Marcos Jr. in his 2024 State of the Nation Addeess (SONA).

Marcos has instructed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to facilitate the wind down and seizure process, with over 300+ POGOs currently in the country to be gone by the end of the year. Marcos has also instructed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), in coordination with economic managers, to find new jobs for the Filipino workers who will be displaced from the ban.

According to DOLE, around 22,000 Filipinos in NCR will lose their jobs in the face of a POGO ban.

"Kailangan na itigil ang paggulo nito [POGOs] sa ating lipunan at paglalapastangan sa ating bansa," Marcos Jr. said.

SONA 2024, Marcos' third in his administration, was held live at the Batasang Pambansa Complex.

FOLLOWING THE DISSOLUTION of the Research Unit towards the end of SY 2023-2024, research and elective teachers planned for the intensive research program especially for Grade 10, during which students come up with research topics they plan to pursue for said subject until Grade 12.

Assistant to CID Chief for Academic Affairs Sevedeo Malate, the meeting was designed to discuss the possibility of Grade 10 students arriving at research topics aligned with their electives.

"There is a need to merge the two groups so they can provide quality research topics for (Grade 10) students," he said.

Malate explained that Grade 10 students are supposed to choose their electives soundly so their teachers can help students identify their research topics.

"Sa pag sign-up pa lang, magbibigay na kami ng research topics. Since anim kami (offering electives), magbibigay na kami ng research topics na ipo-propose. The topics will include scope so students may have a clear overview of the topics," Malate added.

Students can choose from six electives, in Grade 10 namely: public health and hygiene education (under Minette Eloreta); materials science and engineering (under Gio Elegado); chemical engineering (under new teacher Sario); drone technology (under Luis Bragais); internet of things (under Malate); and robotics (under John Rhayel Delos Santos).

"Ibig sabihin, ang research and elective teachers nag-uusap na for one output for two subjects," Malate underscored, adding that choosing an elective is essential since a student deciding not to take an elective might find difficulties in research pursuits.

Under the intensive program, teachers will already start collaborating: research teachers requiring outputs every quarter and electives requiring case studies, for example, and hands-on laboratory undertaking which should be anchored on the research topics.

During the second quarter, while research teachers would require writing the proposal, students under elective classes will be guided by their elective teachers in writing the design as offshoot to their hands-on laboratory activities and prototyping.

Malate said the requirement will be the same for the two subjects.

At the end of the school year, students will have finished their research proposal since they will be assisted by both research and elective teachers.

"Elective classes will provide the footwork, yung madugong part, while research classes will be the ones to provide the documentation," Malate stressed.

Incidentally, Malate said an intellectual property workshop will be conducted and will involve both elective and research teachers who will eventually guide Research 1 students on the format to be used.

Malate also said during the sign-up for electives, elective teachers will already espouse research topics students can pursue for proposal at the end of the school year.

Students, according to Malate, will already be assured of quality research topics for research competitions and will no longer have difficulties in pursuing these topics in Grade 11, when they finish their research projects.

In a later interview, Malate told The Bicol Scholar that students will be given options to navigate through other research topics.

"Di lang na-discuss yung other options. Anyway, during the signups, i-elaborate na lang sa kanila," Malate clarified.

The meeting was held on June 20 as part of the CID Planning for the coming school year.

THE ADVISERS of the Alternative Learning Activity (ALA) groups planned for the various activities, seminars, workshops, and forums students expect to take place this coming School Year 2024-2025.

The event took place at PSHS-BRC Audiovisual Room on June 20 as part of the four-day Curriculum Instruction Division (CID) Planning organized by the division with CID Chief Maria Aileen Pesino as head.

According to Division of Student Affairs (DSA) and Assistant to CID Chief Mylene Joaquin, the activities will not be final yet since the officers and members of the ALAs are yet to be chosen during the first week of the school year.

In an interview with Pisay-BRC Nexus Club Adviser John Richard B. Moreno, the club will venture into exploring other activities which the club hopes to infuse this coming school year.

"But we will maintain our regular activities such as puzzle day, regular social media posting like Motivational Monday, Writing Wednesday, etcetera," Moreno said.

Moreno also added that the club hopes to push through with the English talks, which they were not able to do during the previous school year.

"We will make sure we have a schedule for that (English talks) and we hope to invite my colleagues in the Unit or perhaps, Sir Jhetro (Cledera) since their club (Pisay Tings) focuses more on science communication," Moreno said.

The coming school year will have additional ALAs or clubs and will espouse new interest clubs for students.

The Bicol Scholar, the official student publication in English, will be back following a year of absence and since some students clamored that it be restored based on a survey conducted by the DSA.

As regards membership, grades 7 to 10 are required to enlist themselves in only one ALA. Enlistment for ALAs shall remain optional for grades 11 to 12 students.

Oliver said students will have to choose only one main club.

"They can have one ALA fallback (as suggested by BRC Director Lorvi Pagorogon)," Oliver said referring to students who may be excluded in the final roster of officers as in the case of The Bicol Scholar.

The paper will conduct a qualifying examination for applicants as staffers. Said examination will only be finalized a month after the August 5 opening of the new school year.

ALAs will continue to hold their regular sessions on Wednesday afternoon

In an effort to plan for next school year's academic and non-academic activities, the four-day Curriculum and Instruction Division (CID) Planning unfolded today, June 18, at the Audiovisual Room.

The event began with PSHS-BRC Campus Director Lorvi Pagorogon stressing on the plans the newly-installed PSHS System Executive Director Ronnalee Orteza has for the system.

"It's 'the way forward'," Pagorogon was quoted alluding to Orteza's brand of leadership. Orteza, however, would continue the best practices of the previous term of former Executive Director Lilia Habacon, Pagorogon said.

Pagorogon also emphasized the need for collaboration and reminded the teachers to push through with the plans started last year.

CID Chief Maria Aileen Pesino then gave an overview of the four-day event. She said collaboration will benefit both the scholars and teachers, encouraging the latter to be creative in coming up with assessments with two to three subject teachers collaborating, hence lessening students' burdens.

Physics Unit Head Fely Buera presented the policy on collaboration developed during last school year's CID planning. Citing Singapore as an example, Buera expressed optimism that the concept and practice of collaboration will work for the campus.

The academic unit heads then presented the projects, which came as alternative assessments, during the school year that just ended. The goal was for all teachers to picture out the curriculum in terms of assessments and determine where they could come in to collaborate with other subjects.

In the afternoon, the teachers went on to have a workshop which aimed to plot possible collaborations per grade level.

The outputs will be presented on Friday during the closing program.
