Escoltara! is a Tagalog 2D animated short that follows Carlo, a journalist, who ventures into the city of Manila seeking a place to write about in his blog together with his team, Keith and Joyce. Along the way, Carlo and his friends join a heritage walk and Carlo finds himself blown away by the wind and into the past of a once bustling street of Escolta.

Built in 1914, this early skyscraper was designed by Ramon Irureta-Goyena and Francisco Perez-Muñoz. It was a wedding present of Antonio Melian y Pavia, third Count of Peracamps, to his bride Margarita Zóbel de Ayala, who was a sister of Enrique Zóbel de Ayala in 1914. It survived World War II and a number of earthquakes and is one of two remaining American-era structures in the area facing the Pasig River.

𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬! | 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠

In 1962, a new 12-storey high building was planned to be constructed on the old site of the Crystal Arcade. Designed by a prominent architect Carlos Arguelles. This building completed in 1965 was the 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

It served as the headquarters of the then-government-owned Philippine National Bank or PNB. Just as the Crystal Arcade was built in the popular architectural style of the era which was Art Deco, the PNB Building was built in the popular postwar architectural style which was the International Style.

The presence of the PNB head office somewhat helped keep Escolta’s significance as a commercial and business hub. Unfortunately, PNB moved out of the building by the 1980s-1990s, eventually relocating to its head office at the reclamation area in Pasay.

The last 10 years saw the building abandoned mostly, save for some security stationed in the building. In 2015 however, the building suffered significant damage from a fire that razed portions of the building. The edifice still stands, but concerns about the structure’s soundness were raised.

With these concerns raised, the Manila City Government issued an order for the building’s demolition in early January. Naturally, this has triggered an alarm, especially among heritage conservation activists and architects, citing the significance of the structure in the history of Escolta as the historically premier street of Manila.

𝙒𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙤 𝙩𝙤 𝙀𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙩𝙖 𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙮𝙡𝙚? 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙁𝙍𝙀𝙀!

In 1990, the 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 began operations as an alternative mode of transportation along the Pasig River. The Metro Ferry operated a route from Guadalupe in the then-municipality of Makati down to Escolta Street in Manila, however, it only lasted a year.

But in 2007, The current ferry service, the Pasig River Ferry Service started its initial reopening. After a few rehabilitation projects, it is still in service to this day.

As of August 2022, the Ferry Ride is 𝙁𝙍𝙀𝙀. Just show a valid ID and register to their log book to hand over your ticket.

Built-in 1969, this saucer-like building encaptures a futuristic design that was a trademark of the aesthetic movement that dominated the post-war atomic age. designed by National Artist for Architecture Jose Maria Zaragoza. It is the last building of any architectural significance on "the Queen Street in Manila."

In 1932, the 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗶𝗿-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 opened in Escolta Street. The 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲 was one of the grandest commercial edifices in prewar Manila. It housed several offices and high businesses, including the stock exchange. Arguably the most modern pre-war building in the country. The Crystal Arcade was also the place where the Bureau of Commerce (and Industry) held 1932 the first-ever exposition of products made in the Philippines.

The Crystal Arcade was literally a crystal building in graceful art deco lines, a very fancy establishment for Manila in the 1930s. Designed by the talented artist of Architecture, 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗼.

At a time when decorative art no longer symbolized high culture, iron, and glass had been strongly identified with mass culture constructions elsewhere, Manila’s Crystal Arcade with its art Deco lines was considered the most modern structure in the Philippines. The Crystal Arcade was spectacular, a study in space and light, with a central staircase that seemed to float upward into a vast foyer.

But During the second world war's the Battle of Manila, the building suffered significant damages that undergo some renovations but no repairs or major restorations which left the building to rot and later demolished and replaced by the 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 (𝗣𝗡𝗕) 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

The William A. Jones Memorial Bridge, also known as the 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 was originally designed by Filipino Architect Juan M. Arellano using intricate neoclassical architecture.

The bridge was intended to replace the 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗮ñ𝗮 (𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻), the first bridge built to cross the Pasig River constructed during the Spanish colonial era and the last incarnation of bridges that span the same location since 1630. It collapsed during the heavy rains of September 1914 that weakened the central pier collapsing the middle span of the bridge.

The construction of new bridges was part of a master plan of Manila Daniel Burnham, who wanted to give emphasis to the city's rivers and likened them to the Seine River in Paris and the canals of Venice. It was destroyed during the second world war and was recreated with a simpler design in 1946.

The 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮 opened its doors to the public in 1896 as a Phonograph parlor.

Later in 1897, the first movies were shown, featuring four silent French films namely; 𝗨𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝘂 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘂(Man with a Hat), 𝗨𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲(Scene from a Japanese Dance), 𝗟𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝘅𝗲𝗿𝘀(The Boxers), 𝗟𝗮 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗟'𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮(The Place L'Opera).

After this followed another movie house in Escolta in August 1897, the cinema featured 30 movie titles owned by Sr. Antonio Ramos, a Spanish soldier, with a Lumiere CInematograph, making him the first known motion picture producer in the Philippines.

The site is now occupied by the Peterson Building today.

This pre-war art deco building was located in Escolta and had been built in the 1930s (right), this was an 800-seater theater that was designed by the first National Artist for Architecture, 𝗝𝘂𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝗸𝗽𝗶𝗹.

After the war, Capitol Theater was renovated and steadily resumed its operations until it closed down due to the decline of movie watchers in standalone theaters as mall movie theaters began to rise decades ago. This is what was left in the Capitol Theater. (left)

The Burke Building is home to the 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙀𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨!

In 1919, the Burke Building was the first building to have an elevator in the country. The building was equipped with an 𝙊𝙩𝙞𝙨 𝙀𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧, featured with a brass cage that has been manually closed before the lift could be moved.

There are still these kinds of elevators left in Binondo, one is in the Calvo Building.

𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬! | 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐤𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠

Designed by the renowned pre-architect Tomas Arguelles in 1919, this it Art-Deco design building is named after cardiologist and philanthropist William J. Burke, known for introducing and installing the first electrocardiograph in the Philippines.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙄𝙘𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙥 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙀𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙩𝙖!

𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲'𝘀 𝗜𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗿 located at No.2 Calle Escolta along Plaza Moraga on the south end of the Pasig River was built in 1899 by M.A. "Met" Clarke. The restaurant was a hit with both Americans and the Manila population, they served sodas, ice creams, pastries, and other sweets, including a soda fountain.

But in 1910, disaster struck as Clarke's was sold due to "Met" Clarke's fortune was wiped out due to a flood in the Baguio mines.

Today, the site is occupied by the AIC Center Building

The First United Building hosted various film production studios namely 𝙍𝙑𝙌 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 of legendary comedian 𝘿𝙤𝙡𝙥𝙝𝙮 (1974–2012), 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙖 𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙧 (𝙉𝙑) 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 of actress and producer 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙖 𝘼𝙪𝙣𝙤𝙧 (1973–1985), 𝙂𝘾 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙢𝙨 which is associated with 𝙍𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤 and 𝙂𝙖𝙗𝙗𝙮 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙣 (1982-1984), and 𝙀𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙭 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙢𝙨 of 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙮 𝙕𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙖. 𝘽𝙚𝙧𝙜'𝙨 𝘿𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙚, a main landmark in Escolta.
