Hello! Ham here! It's been a while hey. Let me give you some fun stuff I can say about our recent convention here in Australia: SMASH! Sydney Manga and Anime Show.
Sydney Manga and Anime Show (AKA SMASH!), the highly anticipated anime-focused convention, swept through the city like a whirlwind of vibrant colors and boundless energy. As an avid pop culture fan, I was fortunate enough to attend this grand event and immerse myself in a world where imagination and creativity knew no bounds. From captivating cosplays to an extensive artist alley, SMASH! 2023 had something for every enthusiast, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all who attended.
An Explosion of Cosplay:
As I entered the convention halls, I was immediately greeted by a breathtaking sight. Cosplayers filled the venue, bringing beloved anime characters to life. From classic series to the latest hits, every corner seemed to burst with the essence of popular culture. Elaborately designed costumes meticulously crafted by dedicated fans transported me into the realms of my favorite shows. From magical girls casting spells to heroic warriors brandishing swords, the level of detail and passion exhibited by these cosplayers was truly awe-inspiring.
The Artist Alley: A Haven for Creativity:
The artist alley at SMASH 2023 was a treasure trove of artistic talent. Countless stalls lined the convention floor, showcasing an array of imaginative artwork. From stunning prints capturing the essence of beloved characters to unique interpretations of pop culture icons, it was a feast for the eyes. Talented artists, both established and emerging, displayed their skills and shared their creative visions with the attendees.

As the great Convention Season of July comes to an end, there is one event that lets us remember the loving environment that the cosplay and otaku community helped build. And this event is none other than Otasuke Cosplay Festival, July! This unique event was held on July 30 - 31, 2022. This is not your ordinary convention; it caters to the community that strongly shows the passion they have for cosplay and otaku culture, while encouraging those who have the desire to embark on this journey themselves.
Let’s talk about the venue. It was held in Laperal YouSuites in Recto, where OtaCutE has just launched the newest addition to its floor space, WALL STREET, a quaint area where many in the community can enjoy being able to see performances, lounge around with their fellow peers and just simply enjoy being in the presence of those who share similar interests. Together with the existing LA VILLAGE, the site of past Otasuke events, this venue is highly favored by Otasuke’s attendees, commenting that the venue layout and the available facilities gave them ease and a huge sense of comfort when navigating the event for hours. The open floor plan of the venue allows for everyone to be able to watch all the programs in store.
What activities are there at the venue? Well, there’s lots of them for attendees to enjoy, from multiple booths that have merchandise of their favorite characters from video games to anime, the various treats and concessionaires that serve refreshments at reasonable prices, to the opportunity of being able to support local cosplayers with their prints and merch on sale. On the upper floors, there’s activities aplenty in store: a gaming station where you can sit back and play some video games, and more space to lounge around with your peers. Oh, and remember how Otasuke encourages those who have a desire to start cosplaying? Well get this: there is a cosplay rental booth on the highest floor!
