"Among Uma/Baol"

Upland farming in the remote area in Mindanao Philipoines amidst Pandemic.

Covid-19 Pandemic challenged the whole world for survival. Food supplies is one of the major problem specially in most cities who undergo lockdowns and implemented the worst countermeasure of the spread of this pandemic. Difficulty in transporting and delivery of food supplies due to strict Boundaries checkpoints were experienced. We do suffer the food shortage and increase of the prices of the foods. However, in remote areas in our place specifically in Barangay Nuevo Paraiso, Barobo Surigao del Sur residents still able to do what they traditionally do in farming for sustainability and survival. This is also seen in neighboring municipalities (municipality is compost of many Barangay and Barangay is compost of setios and Purok in Mindanao). KAINGIN is one of the traditional techniques of farmers (self sustaining farmers without some support from the local government unit) continue working on their food. It is a farming technique where farmers cuts the trees and removed grasses and letting it dried and died. After, they will plant it with native corn without fertilizer. Yes, it is organic. Some also do burning of the dried leaves and tress to make the area clean. But the advantages is that after 1 week sprouts of new plants will grow faster than of that no burning of this at all. We can also say it is one of the old natural farming in which no fertilizers and insecticides applied. Corn is the main food in the area which is easy to grow. Most of this called "Uma or Baol" in bisaya language meaning upland farm. Not only corn but we can also plant upland rice, root crops like sweet potato, cassava, taro, banana and various vegetables that only grows in this place.

This proves that amidst pandemic people can survive if we have knowledge on how to plant and produce our own food and people living in this area are so blessed because they're able to continue thier tradition and have an abundance supply of food without worry and away from the spread of the virus.

The renunion with families and friends happens most during this season. Happiness for Filipinos can't be measure by wealth, but it is the family that determines how wealthy you are.

Holy Week "Semana Santa" is one of Filipinos significant religious observant for Roman Catholic and Protestant groups. Holy Week comprises of many activities based on tradition and the Bible.

Palm Sunday (Lingo ng Palaspas) where believers carry palm fronds to the church for the blessings by the priest and then that palm will be posted on every door and altar of each houses, then Holy Wednesday (Merkules Santo ) a procession where conducted, Maundy Thursday (Huebes Santo) the start of the Holy Triduum three days in the Mass that concludes with procession of the blessed Sacrament to the altar, Good Friday the crucification of Jesus in which some areas in the Philippines where some devoted individual let themselves sacrifices like what Jesus did on the cross in order for thier sins be forgiven and some went to the church and pray and attend processions.

And lastly, the Easter Sunday (Lingo ng Pagkabuhay) will celebrated that will be considered to be a joyous celebration and a pre-dawn rite called "Salubong" in Tagalog, Sugat" in Cebuano that means meeting will be held in the church.

However, due to some instances, Filipinos celebrating Lenten season in so many ways, some gathers and family reunited, some were had time enjoying vacation on the beach, travelling abroad and go home to thier hometowns since some treats this occation not in traditional way but somewhat like a long holiday/vacation of the working people. But at the end everyone is thankful that Jesus gaves his life to save every man kind on earth.
