NORTH KOREA - Kaesong city also known as the "City of Pines" (송도; 松都; Songdo)
A rare glimpse into a country so surrounded with mystery.
Kaesong city, or Kaesong Industrial Region, is a city close to the DMZ (Demilatirized Zone), where the MDL (Military Demarcation Line) forms the border of North and South Korea.
This line was formed as a result of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which was signed in 1953 to end the Korean War that came to a stalemate with no winning country.
Kaesong City was once the capital of the Koryo Dynasty (918-1392), holds centuries of rich culture and tradition.
The Kaesong Industrial Region, symbolized a period of cooperation on the Korean pennisular, offering a rare glimpse of potential unification and economic integration.
The fluctuating political relationship between North and South Korea has significantly impacted Kaesong. The closure of the Kaesong Industrial Region in 2016 due to political tensions underscored the fragility of inter-Korean cooperation.
While the city has faced numerous challenges, it remains a symbol of both division and potential reunification on the Korean Peninsula.
