The soldiers of the Army’s 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division (2ID) have donated their one-meal allowance to aid victims of Typhoon Kristine, contributing a total of P669,450. This donation was made during the division's Color Fun Run event, aligning with the October Peace 2024 initiative.

Brigadier General Cerilo Balaoro Jr., the commander of 2ID, emphasized that this contribution represents more than just financial support.

"By contributing the equivalent of one meal from the subsistence allowance, or P150.00 for each member, the soldiers of the 2ID are showing their support for the victims of Typhoon Kristine," Balaoro said.

The donation was handed over to the GMA Kapuso Foundation through its Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Rikki Escudero-Catibog.

This initiative follows a previous donation of P794,208 made last month to assist victims of Typhoon Carina, further demonstrating the division's ongoing commitment to disaster relief.

In addition to monetary support, Brigadier General Balaoro noted that 2ID's search, rescue, and retrieval teams remain deployed in affected regions, actively participating in humanitarian efforts. He underscored the Army's dedication to assisting individuals impacted by this natural disaster, highlighting the collective effort and sacrifices made by the troops.

As the 2ID collaborates with local government units (LGUs) and other organizations, they aim to address the urgent needs of remote areas, adhering to directives from the president.

Three members of the Dawlah Islamiya-Hassan Group (DI-HG) have turned themselves in to authorities in North Cotabato, citing hardships and a desire to live peacefully with their families as reasons for surrender. The military reported their surrender on Friday, November 1, 2024.

The three men, identified only by their aliases—Marco, Midnight, and DTR—surrendered to the Philippine Army’s 90th Infantry Battalion (90IB) on October 30 in Carmen, a town in North Cotabato. As a gesture of sincerity in abandoning their militant activities, they handed over two M-14 rifles and a Carbine rifle to military personnel.

According to the 90IB, the former insurgents shared that harsh conditions within the Dawlah Islamiya faction prompted their decision to leave the group, which they described as pursuing "bad intentions."

The local government of Carmen welcomed the former rebels warmly, holding a presentation ceremony at Camp Locero, home to the 602nd Infantry Brigade. Officials provided each surrenderer with immediate assistance, including cash aid and a sack of rice, and pledged additional support through livelihood programs designed to help them start anew.

The 90IB underscored the importance of the government’s commitment to rehabilitation, highlighting that the livelihood support will help the former combatants build sustainable lives and foster a more peaceful community.

In a significant move towards sustainability, the Philippine Army unveiled its latest initiative focused on "green mobility" during a blessing ceremony for newly acquired electric vehicles on October 29, 2024.

Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, who officiated the event at the Philippine Army Headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, praised the project as a vital step in combating climate change and advancing the nation’s environmental goals.

During his keynote address, Bersamin emphasized the importance of transitioning to electric vehicles as part of a broader government commitment to reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels, which have detrimental effects on the environment.

The Philippine Army's initiative aligns with the government's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable practices across various sectors. By integrating electric vehicles into its fleet, the Army aims to set an example for other institutions and encourage wider adoption of eco-friendly transportation solutions.

The newly acquired electric vehicles represent a pivotal change in the Army’s operational approach, enhancing mobility while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Bersamin further highlighted that such advancements are crucial in addressing the pressing challenges of climate change, which affects not only the Philippines but the global community as well.

In a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, spokesperson for the Philippine Navy (PN) in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), highlighted the surge in multilateral maritime activities since the formal announcement of the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC) in February.

"So after the launching, the statement of the SND (Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro Jr.) on the CADC, there has been a dramatic increase in the activities in the WPS by the Armed Forces with our partners and allies," Trinidad said.

This year alone, the PN has engaged in at least ten multilateral exercises, up from just three last year.

"These include ships from different countries, including Australia, New Zealand, European powers, Japan, the US, and others," he added.

Trinidad emphasized that these engagements extend beyond naval operations, encompassing air and ground activities as well as disaster response efforts.

"Before the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, we were able to receive a lot of international support from ASEAN countries and the US, and we could attribute this to our international engagements with them," Trinidad said.

While he did not disclose specifics about future activities, he reassured that the PN plans to continue expanding its international collaborations, adhering to guidelines set by DND Secretary Teodoro.

Furthermore, Trinidad highlighted the significant participation of partner nations, emphasizing that they are deploying their most capable naval vessels, including capital ships.

"Last time, we had the aircraft carrier of Italy and major ships from European powers. So this is a good indicator that the international community is supportive of international law in this part of the globe," he concluded.

Military aircraft from Singapore and Malaysia touched down in the Philippines on Saturday, offering critical support for ongoing relief operations following the devastation caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.

A Republic of Singapore Air Force C-130 cargo aircraft and a Royal Malaysian Air Force Eurocopter EC725 transport helicopter arrived at Villamor Air Base to aid the Philippine Air Force (PAF) in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) efforts, particularly in areas hardest hit by the storm.

The Department of National Defense said that the contributions from Singapore and Malaysia will be instrumental in augmenting resources and enhancing coordination in the distribution of relief supplies, evacuation support, and medical services.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. was present to welcome the international reinforcements, accompanied by Malaysian Ambassador Dato Abd Malik Castelino, Singaporean Ambassador Constance See, and PAF Commanding General LtGen Stephen Parreño.

The PAF’s HADR operations have been underway since the storm hit earlier this week, causing severe flooding, extensive power outages, and forcing thousands from their homes.

The addition of the C-130 and EC725 aircraft will allow for increased transport of goods, deployment of rescue personnel, and broader access to communities in remote and heavily impacted regions.

Both aircraft are expected to conduct multiple missions over the coming days as weather permits, with Singapore and Malaysia’s support marking a significant boost to relief efforts and showcasing regional unity in times of crisis.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF)’s 250th Presidential Airlift Wing has intensified relief efforts in the Bicol Region, deploying three helicopters to deliver essential supplies to communities isolated by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.

In a coordinated relief mission, two Bell 412 helicopters and one Black Hawk helicopter from the PAF took to the skies to provide critical assistance to Bula in Camarines Sur and Libon in Albay, both of which remain inaccessible by road due to heavy damage from the storm.

The transport of relief goods included over 300 sacks and boxes containing food, water, and other essential items needed by residents still grappling with the aftermath of the storm.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Tactical Operations Group 5 and the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division, ensuring that isolated communities received timely aid.

Severe Tropical Storm Kristine brought heavy rains and strong winds that swept through Bicol, leaving many areas devastated and cut off from immediate assistance.

The PAF’s rapid deployment of air assets underlines its capacity to deliver humanitarian support in difficult-to-reach areas, overcoming logistical challenges to fulfill a vital role in national disaster response.

The Philippine Air Force’s continued engagement in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief showcases its dedication to serving communities across the archipelago.

An army convoy delivering essential aid to residents of Albay, ravaged by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, came under attack on Sunday by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, leaving one soldier injured.

The ambush took place in Barangay Matanglad, Pio Duran, during a clash between soldiers from the 49th Infantry Battalion and approximately ten NPA rebels.

According to Major Frank Roldan, spokesperson for the Philippine Army's 9th Infantry Division, the encounter lasted around 15 minutes, resulting in minor injuries to a soldier’s left leg due to an anti-personnel mine— a weapon prohibited under international humanitarian law.

Roldan expressed concern over reports that the NPA rebels had also been seizing relief supplies from residents struggling with severe food shortages in their areas due to the storm's aftermath.

"Dahil kay Kristine, wala na din sila makain sa mga area nila," Roldan said, alluding to the desperation that may be driving such actions.

In a statement condemning the assault, Philippine Army spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala characterized the ambush as "cowardly interference," underscoring the NPA's disregard for civilians in crisis.

Dema-ala appealed to the public to report any threats from armed groups and assured communities that the Philippine Army (PA) remains committed to safeguarding public safety and ensuring aid reaches those in need.

As storm-hit areas struggle to recover, the army's steadfast dedication to relief efforts offers a vital source of support for communities grappling with the dual impacts of natural disaster and unrest.
