Balance in general is seen as equally visual weight. It has to do with the configuration and association of objects in relation, or lack of relation to each other. Here's an analogy to describe balance.

Try walking along distance with a three-pound bag of mangoes in one hand, and a 9-pound bag of guavas in the other. After a while, you'll be wanting to shift your load around putting some blocks in the brick bat to balance your load making it easier to walk. This is how balance works in design.

Visual balance comes from arranging elements on the page so that no one section is heavier than the other. Or a designer may intentionally throw elements out of balance to create tension or a certain mood. There are basically three kinds of balances in design.

Symmetrical balance has a central axis dividing the composition down the middle, horizontally, or vertically with the same design on both sides. What most of us would think of is a mirror reflection. Asymmetrical design is typically off centered or created with an odd or mismatch number of disparate elements.

There are specific principles that graphic designers follow. They look at the design principles of balance and alignment. This pertains to the placement and configuration of objects as well as the orientation and association. These can apply to both images and text.

Proximity and space are to consider. Proximity has to do with the unity of objects. Space has to do with the area around the objects. Repetition and consistency are two more principles of design. These pertain to repeating materials, such as logos, fonts, and colors to establish consistency in your branded materials.

We also look at contrast, how color, size, value, and type can affect a design. Generally, all the principles of design can apply to any piece you may create. How you apply these principles determines the effectiveness of your design, in conveying the desired message and how attractive it appears.

Along the way, you will understand there is rarely only one correct way to apply each principle.

Brainstorming includes coming up with as many ideas as possible. This will take time for the designer and the client to come up with ideas, create thumbnails, consider fonts, and find graphics and lay them out in preliminary draft ideas. These first few steps are so important in making sure you, and the designer have all the information needed to complete the project.

As the project progresses, initial research and brainstorming will allow for questions with possible answers. Ideas may also be narrowed down.

Some of these steps may look familiar because they are needed, and followed in many industries when working on projects.

You start with the problem, research some possible solutions, brainstorm those solutions, narrow down some initial ideas, evaluate those ideas, and then come up with a final idea. Let's take time to apply these steps of the design process, that most graphic designers and creatives are familiar with.

The problem step includes critical questions you need to bring to, and work through with a designer. Who, what, where, when, why, and how? Who's the audience? What are the needed pieces? Where are they going to be distributed?
When is it needed? Why is it needed? How will it be executed, produced and delivered?

Keep in mind you can't find a solution until you have a clear idea of what the problem is.
