Did you know? The symbol that looks like an italicized capital "I" in the middle of the Philippine Army logo is actually a Baybayin character that depicts the letter “K” and is read as “KA”.

The symbol stands for “Katipunan” short for the Kataastaasan Kagalanggalang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan or K*K. K*K was a secret society formed in 1892 to revolt against the three-century rule of Spaniard in the country.

The character was also used in the “Light of Liberty” seal from 1892 to 1897 as well as in the Magdiwang Flag and the Magdalo Flag. At present, the symbol can also be seen in the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Coat of Arms; the Rank Insignias of Company Grade officers whose rank is 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant and Captain; as well as Field Grade Officers ranked Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel.
