38 years later, Filipinos are still on the streets

To commemorate the 38th anniversary of the People Power Revolution, which toppled Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and sent his family into exile, multisectoral groups assemble at the Epifanio de los Santos (EDSA) Shrine.

The historical narrative has become less significant to many Filipinos in recent years. However, multiple activists, advocates, and organizations took it to the streets --- defending the recent 'charter change' controversy.

The Office of the President states that while the EDSA revolution falls on a Sunday, it was not declared a holiday this year.

Recently gaining attention in the film industry, the Filipino movie โ€œGomBurZaโ€ has recently made waves for its powerful and thought-provoking portrayal of the countryโ€™s past. Directed by Pepe Diokno,โ€œGomBurZaโ€ tells the story of the three Filipino priests, Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, who were unjustly executed during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. The movie is a timely reminder of the significance of history education in the Philippines, especially in light of the infamous Pinoy Big Brotherโ€™s โ€œMaJoHaโ€ controversy. In a nation haunted by historical distortion, how ignorant can you be?

Known for crafting insightful films that capture the essence of the nationโ€™s history and culture, the Philippine entertainment industry recently welcomed โ€œGomBurZaโ€ to its list, a film that tackles the story of the three Filipino priests who were executed by the Spanish colonizers in 1872. However, amidst the positive reception of the movie, there was a controversial incident that reminded us of the importance of maintaining accurate historical education in the Philippines. In the popular reality show โ€œPinoy Big Brotherโ€ (PBB), teenage participants struggled with what an educator deemed as โ€œbasicโ€ history questions, where one of the participants missed the true relevance of the term โ€œGomBurZaโ€. This has revived demands to reintroduce the subject into the high school curriculum. The โ€œMaJoHaโ€ issue, which revolved around the lack of historical knowledge among the youth, sparked outrage among netizens. It highlighted the alarming disconnect between the younger generation and their own history. The repercussions of this knowledge gap are far-reaching, as it impacts the understanding of cultural identity, societal dynamics, and the resilience of the Filipino spirit.

In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the distortion of history in the country. Many argue that the current education system fails to accurately teach and represent the countryโ€™s past, leading to a distorted understanding of our identity and heritage. This is evident in the widespread celebration of historical figures and events that have been glorified, while the true heroes and injustices are often forgotten. Moreover, historical education also serves as a reminder of the mistakes and injustices of the past, and how we can learn from them to create a better future. It is through understanding our history that we can appreciate the freedom and democracy we have today, and work towards preserving and improving it for generations to come.

This is where โ€œGomBurZaโ€ becomes significant. By retelling the story of the three priests, the film brings attention to a significant event in Philippine history that has been overshadowed by other narratives. It serves as a wake-up call to the Filipino people to not forget the sacrifices of our ancestors and to continue fighting for justice and freedom. The movie highlights the power of storytelling in preserving history. As the saying goes, โ€œHistory is written by the victors.โ€ This rings true in the Philippine context, where theSpanish colonizers have long dominated the narrative of our country's past. โ€GomBurZaโ€ challenges this narrative and gives a voice to the oppressed and marginalized, reminding us of the importance of multiple perspectives in understanding history. Furthermore, the film also tackles the issue of freedom and justice. The three priests, Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, were executed for speaking out against the injustices of the Spanish colonial government. Their courage and sacrifice serve as a reminder that the fight for freedom and justice is a continuous battle that must be passed on to the next generation.

As the movie fades from the screen, it reminds us of the current state of the Philippines. Where historical revisionism and distortion are prevalent, the role of education becomes more crucial than ever. It is our responsibility as a nation to ensure that the next generation is equipped with the knowledge and understanding of our past. History education is not just about memorizing dates and events; it is about understanding the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors and how it shaped our society today. Ignorance is the enemy within, and as the plot thickens, injustice has always been the sequel nobody asked for.

LET THE MATH-TASTIC GAMES BEGIN!

As the Math Month celebration rapturously opened its festivity last January 8, 2023, Elite Math Circle (EMC) has prepared a plethora of fun-filled learning games and activities yesterday, January 12, 2023.

With the theme "Playing with Mathematics," the organization has unlocked the battlefield for the Tower of Hanoi, Rubik's Cube, and Sudoku competition, attracting numerous students from all grade levels to participate actively and enthusiastically.

"Iโ€™m glad that they brought back campus competitions like this to make students appreciate different puzzles and math-related games. I learned that Scientians are diverse when it comes to their capabilities and talents. I had fun competing not only because of my goal to win, but unexpected friendships also came my way throughout the short but productive competition," Charles Cardinales, a student and participant from ABM 12-Leavitt said to express his delight over the activities.

President of EMC, Alexander Doronila, stated that yesterday's contests were only the beginning of an enlightening and joy-prevailing month as the Math Quiz Bee and Math Exhibit are still on their way on January 19 and February 2, 2024, respectively.

As the curtains close for yesterday's event, Alexander adds how this program can benefit the school and the student body as a whole. "Students are able to both enjoy and even proudly show their talents; additionally, it is also a testament of pride for Taguig Science High School's skilled and intellectual students," he mentioned, expressing both his eagerness and gratitude for this month's Math celebration.

Taguig Science High School participates in 'Discover the Magic of Reading: Drop Everything and Read' day-event as implemented by the Department of Education on Friday, January 12.

Graduating Grade 12 student Marga Dionisio did not expect that such event would be implemented because of the amount of school works being given one week before the first semester finals examination. "I love reading, hindi ko na [books] natutuloy sa bahay [...] I am happy to know na may time na nilaan dito sa school para magbasa," she expresses.

Fellow graduating ABM student Kesler Aquino states DEAR program helps students learn and be more engaged in reading. However, moving forward, Ariane Galpao, Grade 12 PRISM Editorial writer, claims aforementioned program may also have negative effects that might exert influence on Friday classes causing lack of time to study their school subjects.

The Department of Education (DepEd), encouraged by President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos, increases its efforts to raise the nation's score on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). In the most recent 2022 PISA, the Philippines performed poorly in reading comprehension, maths, and science, ranking in the bottom ten out of 81 countries.

31/12/2023

As we light our fireworks and commemorate this mirthful eve full of smiles and eager spirits, let us take a moment and reminisce about the people who are not going to celebrate this New Year with so much happiness and excitement in their hearts.

To the people of Gaza, let us remember their plight of being displaced from their homeland. As we revel in this day with a warm embrace from those we love, let it sink into our mind that these people face the challenge of seeing their families slaughtered and torn apart. Let us continue to fight for their cause and empathize with their grapple in reclaiming the land that is rightfully theirs.

To our jeepney drivers, who face an insidious end on this celebratory day, let us remember their legacy amidst the fear of phasing out from the road. Let it be this memory that will blare the horn of justice and ignite a revolution that will strike the hearts of those who threaten to terrorize the king of the streets.

Indeed, as this day marks the end of a year filled with hardships and turmoil, it will not be the day when we will festively move on from all the struggles we have faced and experienced. Instead, this will be the day when we celebrate the beginning of a new chapterโ€”one that will be filled with happiness fueled not by personal victories but triumphs paved by the spirit of empathy and solidarity.

Happy New Year everyone, and may justice be ever in our favor!

For the second straight assessment, the Philippines has ranked among the lowest-performing countries globally in reading, math, and science, cementing our education systemโ€™s downfall in the latest Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Despite the ocean of funding and labyrinth of bureaucracy that is the Department of Education (DepEd), it has failed our children again. When will we stop making excuses and demand real change?

DepEd quickly deflected blame after the abysmal PISA results, claiming the assessment came too soon after pandemic disruptionsโ€”a feeble excuse when other countries also endured COVID-19 yet still managed to educate students effectively. Indeed, the Philippines has languished among the bottom rungs of PISA for decadesโ€”no virus caused that.

At its core lies the struggle to balance centralized and decentralized aspects, stretching education resources thin. Such a nuanced distribution of power between regions and the capital profoundly impacts learning quality when mismanaged. Consequently, funding gaps or uneven policy directives across jurisdictions worsen equality, as limited budgets get wasted rather than channeled responsibly toward nurturing human potential.

Problematic reactions further enable strained policies like DepEd Order No. 42, which only gave out remedial classes to failing students instead of addressing the reasons why they are failing, prioritizing superficial statistics rather than repairing systemic cracks exposed by COVID-19 strains. Quick fixes like these are just a flimsy band-aid for systematic problems with learning quality when struggling students advance without grasping expected knowledge and skills. Damage control replaces meaningful reform for the future.

The minimal learning that does occur remains shallow and temporary, with students memorizing facts to vomit back during standardized testing before promptly forgetting. No deep knowledge takes root, and no analytical abilities are fostered. Graduates then enter college and the workforce, armed only with empty certificates rather than the empowering skills to communicate, analyze complex problems, or simply think creatively.

If DepEd cannot educate now, what future do our children have? We need courageous reforms centered first on fixing the DepEd itselfโ€”slash red tape, install accountability at every level, and reshape teacher training to prioritize pedagogical skills over credential rote. Learning objectives must nurture creativity, critical thinking, and knowledge application across all subjects instead of just rewarding temporary cramming for standardized tests.

For decades, the DepEdโ€™s failures have squandered Philippine potential and stolen our childrenโ€™s future. When will we finally stop making excuses? Our youth deserve so much better than a broken system producing functionally illiterate graduates. Demand that change starts today before DepEd fails yet another generation.

In light of the governmentโ€™s apparent adamancy regarding the deadline for jeepney consolidation on December 31, several transport groups have indomitably expressed their disheartenment over this flagrant derision, with PISTON and Manibela recently igniting another transport strike last December 18. Despite the intensifying echoes coming from a record of demonstrations, the administrationโ€™s persistent and ignorant dismissal is grievously abominable, clearly showing its ambitious motives for a duplicitous endeavor that carries the threat of exacerbating poverty in the country.

Jeepney consolidation represents just one segment of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) originally introduced this initiative, aiming to unite 15 operators and drivers into a single cooperative. This organization, in turn, will act as a symbiotic alliance capable of assisting members under its umbrella to afford modernized units.

Since its inception in 2017, the questionable initiative has received numerous criticisms from lawmakers and activists alike. While the authoritative proponents have branded the motion advantageous to the environmental and technological sectors, the narrow list of benefits indicates its shallow and futile attempt to support its primary benefactors.

With its forcible implementation, the fundamental disadvantage lies in the inevitable franchise forfeiture from the operator. The cooperative genesis of jeepney consolidation entails a compulsory resignation of individual franchises from the previous boundary system, coercing each member inside the assembly to borrow from bureaucratic banks in compliance with availing modernized units.

In spite of the subsidies extending up to 280,000 PHP, the staggering 1.3 to 3 million PHP cost of a single unit far exceeds the proposed assistance the state can provide. The stark rift between governmental capability and the substantial capital to attain such progress will impose only a strenuous burden on countless drivers, inadvertently becoming the catalyst for unemployment rather than modernization.

In response to this dearth, the consolidation comes with a fleet management system responsible for bearing the task with unity to ensure every member can pay off the debt. However, it does not entertain the forthcoming turmoil that can potentially wedge the pockets of several passengers. As tension from aggravating costs can exponentially increase, price hikes can inevitably become imminent once implementation continues its course. This proliferation will only encumber commuters who are already grappling with roaring inflationary whirlwinds and economic turbulence, leaving them strikingly susceptible to the harrowing arrows of poverty.

Additionally, with the program shouldering more burden than betterment, its goals will render an destructive shift within the jeepney industry. According to UP Integrative and Development Studies, enforcement of cooperatives can overtake the current economic landscape, presenting "a window of opportunity for the corporate takeover of small-capacity public transportation in the Philippines."

Corporate dominance often serves as a vantage point from which ubiquitous socio-economic challenges can amplify and exacerbate. With a formidable threat extending across the nationโ€™s macrocosm, its relentless deployment institutionalizes a dire trajectory, possessing a domino effect that can marginalize citizens and worsen societal disparities.

So far, records from the DOTr reveal that only 84,809 out of 149,448 jeepney units in the Philippines have successfully filed their application for consolidation. This significant deficit highlights the impending challenges plaguing numerous drivers and operators as they endure to comply with the demands of a modernization seemingly tailored only for the elite and financially abled. If this rate remains stagnant and unmovable, the government is on a movement for an autogenic struggle that puts the fate of its citizens in detrimental peril.

In the context of modernization, the PUVMP is a conspicuous antithesis that plunges the people into the abyss of poverty. If the government truly wants to revolutionize progress within the country, it should not solely rely on a wildcard that wages the welfare of its people. Instead, it should focus on building holistic and modernized opportunities for its citizens to fare comfortably toward prosperity.

Picture an academically-inclined school girl whose life revolves in school, family, and friends. She could be anyone, right? Now, to narrow it downโ€“she has short hair; face beaming with a smile spanning from one ear to the otherโ€“as if sheโ€™d been kissed by the sun. And the cherry on top, she wears pink glasses. Charisse Macapagal is the girlโ€™s name. And to anyone who knows her, the pink frame is her trademark. But even though Charisse uses rose-colored frames for her eyeglasses, sheโ€™s proven she doesnโ€™t see the worldโ€“especially the Philippinesโ€“ through rose-colored lenses.

A smart Taguigeno student (SRCCMSTHS), the girl has amassed great academic recognition and is a math olympiad with experience spanning years in international competitions, bringing home the bacon in the form of silver and bronze medals. But just recently, the girl with pink glasses added a significant number of awards to her already extensive list what one would least expect from a Science High School student; a first place in the arts.

Through her rose-colored glasses, one can see that her brown eyes glisten with wisdom of the countryโ€™s issues and her heart burns red with passion for the masses. And so, with her mind dead-set on helping the Filipinos, she connects to her temple a pen, writing a flamboyant stage play entitled โ€˜The Big Bangโ€™, which warranted her and her team, Teatro Compaรฑero, the blue ribbon in the International Science Drama Competition.

She colored the stage rainbow as the play starts off with an upbeat song that paints the Philippines, including its traditions, culture and people, in a vibrant array of colorsโ€“slightly incorporating in the lyrics the peopleโ€™s wish to have a leader.

Within minutes, however, the atmosphere on the stage is engulfed by an eerie gray as an announcement that D-day is coming echoes throughout the auditorium , signaling the impending doom of the countryโ€™s environment.

The actors scramble in panic until Lucy, the newfound leader dressed in yellow, hushes the crowd and proceeds to suggest, or, rather, force multiple โ€˜solutionsโ€™ to facilitate sustainability including total jeepney modernization, with reference to the nationโ€™s most controversial socio-political issue of late.

In a โ€˜SNAP!โ€™, the townsfolk experience a glimpse into the future, unfortunately showing what is the opposite of the desired outcome of Lucyโ€™s previous suggestions. The stage flashes maroon, as the people point out the environmentโ€™s deteriorated state because the system that Lucy had built did not work, or, to put it less pessimistically, the machine is sputtering badly. But rather than admitting her fault, Lucy decides to point her fingers to the masses, noting that their snail-like speed is to blame for the destruction of their surroundings. This time, however, the tables turn as the public hushes Lucy back, noting that her solutions are lightyears away from the countryโ€™s reach.

To finish her theatrical masterpiece, a final stroke of neon reveals that they are given a second chance. And Lucy, together with the townsfolk, start promoting climate justice at a speed that is just. In the last shot, the stage is yet again painted by not just vibrant colors and lights, but also of signboards that voice out its playwrightโ€™s call to act fast, but to limit its scope to domains in which it can be most efficient and least detrimental, all written in neon, to shine brightly even in the dark. In the end, the whole play rightfully receives a standing ovation from one of the judges and Teatro Companero snags their golden trophies in the 10th of September this year, giving Taguigenos indubitable, prideful proof that Filipinos can compete artistically on the worldโ€™s stage, all the while spreading more efficient solutions that promote sustainability responsibly.

Today, Charisse continues to show her true colors by writing and directing more plays and films, clutching her pen, wishing that those who are blind can finally see a ray of light as they see through her rose-colored glasses. She hopes for a brighter tomorrow for the Philippines' environment after all of the political turmoil. After all, rainbows do come after rains, donโ€™t they?

Grade 12 Cardinals break it through Grade 11 MVPinks in the Men's Volleyball Finals, 3-2 sets.

Grade 12 Cardinals reigned supreme over Grade 11 Mighty Vanguards Pinks (MVPinks) in the Best of 3 matches championship of Men's Volleyball, in a clinching 3 - 2 alongside the Closing of SinagLigsahan SportFest, December 12, held at Taguig Science High School campus ground.

Cardinals started off roughly in Set 1, but they immediately turned the tide of the battle to their favor, keeping MVPinks away from taking set one in 25 - 17.

MVPinks then started to make plays and blocked Cardinals away from the second set, it was 8 points in when Cardinals first made their score, leading to MVPinks securing set 2 in 11 - 25 making Cardinal's effort barely worthwhile.

The streak continues for MVPinks but without any struggles thanks to Cardinals in Set 3, they fought back against MVPinks leading to a fierce battle but odds eventually fell into MVPinks' favor in a sticky 21 - 25.

Cardinals have had enough of MVPinks, decided to exert even more pressure, the set was kept at an all time high as both teams tie in different times up until the end, Cardinals rose from the occasion and sealed Set 4 in their hands, 26 - 24.

With the final set, both teams duked it out for the Championship title, with what energy to spare, Cardinals raced against MVPinks and made their last spike count that finally declared a winner, solidifying their win in 15 - 13.

Loud cheers enveloped the grounds as the audience witness the excellence both teams displayed, using their wits and skills to make it through the rough journey.

A sweet victory indeed for Grade 12 Cardinals as they were crowned as Champions for Men's Volleyball of the SinagLigsahan SportFest.

The uproar of cheers from students filled the TagSci campus as Sinagligsahan formally closes after a month-long battle of excellence on Tuesday, December 12.

With Geiana Nalcot and Carlos John Dela Cruz as the hosts, the event showcased the talented students from Sinag El Musika, SinAg Pop Dance Crew, SinAg Taekwondo, and SinAg Pep Squad.

MAPEH Coordinator Nikko Mediana gave welcome remarks followed by an inspirational message from English Coordinator Wilhelmina Estrada emphasizing the importance of Sinagligsahan as a pursuit for excellence. Lara Burabod and Kyle Sibayan led the torch lighting. The ceremonial toss commenced by Clyde Noche and Benley Lomeda, Grade 10 and 12 Basketball players, respectively.

Students from various grade levels showed their support to their batchmates as the bench cheer competition started with Grade 10 Blue Dragons, followed by Grade 8 Yellow Jaguars, Grade 9 Red Lions, Grade 11 MVPinks (Mighty Vanguard Pinks), Grade 7 Green Storm, and Grade 12 Cardinals.

After the bench cheer, the championship games for Menโ€™s Volleyball started. The game ended in a victorious wail of the Grade 12 Cardinals and its supporters as they brought home the bacon.

โ€œSyempre, masaya siya, to be honest, nakalulungkot nga dahil talo kami pero still nabigay naman namin โ€˜yong best namin and mahalaga nag-enjoy lahat pati โ€˜yong audience,โ€ MVPinks Menโ€™s Volleyball player Eiron Buenaventura claimed.

Medina expressed his gratitude following the closing of the โ€œlong overdue eventโ€ that was originally supposed to end in the third week of December. It was a collective sacrifice made by the students and teachers who helped facilitate the entirety of the month.

He mentioned that a single MAPEH session in one week cannot maintain scientianโ€™s health and well-being. โ€œNakuha naman namin ang rationale ng event โ€” to make the students moveโ€” [the program] was a success. Everything fell in the right place,โ€ he added.
