GROCERY TIME

Here are 10 interesting facts about groceries:

Origin of the Word "Grocery": The word "grocery" comes from the Old French word "grossier," which means "wholesaler" or "merchant," indicating bulk buying.

Grocery Stores Are Big Business: The global grocery retail market is worth over $12 trillion, with large chains like Walmart and Amazon leading the sector.

First Supermarket: The first self-service supermarket was Piggly Wiggly, founded in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee. It revolutionized how people shop for food by allowing them to pick items from the shelves themselves.

Fresh Produce vs. Packaged Goods: Fresh produce usually has a higher margin for grocery stores compared to packaged or processed foods, despite fresh items being more perishable.

Grocery Shopping Frequency: On average, U.S. consumers visit the grocery store about 1.5 times per week, but this has decreased with the rise of online grocery shopping and delivery services.

The Influence of Color: Supermarkets often use specific colors, like red and yellow, to stimulate appetite and increase impulse buying. Bright colors can encourage shoppers to make purchases.

Plastic Bags Impact: In some places, grocery stores are banned from using plastic bags to help reduce plastic waste. Alternatives like reusable bags and paper bags are increasingly popular.

The Cost of Groceries: Inflation affects grocery prices, making staple items like bread, milk, and eggs subject to regular price hikes. The cost of groceries has risen significantly in recent years due to supply chain disruptions and global events.

Online Grocery Shopping Growth: The pandemic accelerated the trend of online grocery shopping, with more consumers relying on e-commerce platforms like Instacart, Amazon Fresh, and others for their food needs.

Food Waste: A significant portion of grocery store food, particularly perishable items, goes to waste. It's estimated that about 30-40% of food produced globally ends up as waste, impacting both the environment and economies.

PAKO VEGETABLE

The Waray-Waray people, indigenous to the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, have a rich agricultural tradition that includes cultivating a variety of vegetables used in local cuisine. Among these is the "Pako" or "fern," scientifically known as Diplazium esculentum. This vegetable thrives in the region’s humid and fertile environment, especially in areas like Leyte, Samar, and Biliran.

Pako is a native fern that has been a staple in Waray-Waray dishes for centuries. Its tender, young fronds are gathered and used in salads, stews, and other traditional recipes. It is often cooked in a dish called "Pako Salad" with tomatoes, onions, and fish sauce, or in "Kaldo," a savory soup with pork or fish. The Waray-Waray people are known for their resourcefulness in utilizing local plants like Pako, which are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Historically, the use of Pako vegetable reflects the deep connection the Waray-Waray people have with the land and their indigenous knowledge of edible plants. As the years progressed, the use of Pako spread beyond the Waray-Waray community, and it became known as a nutritious and delicious vegetable enjoyed across various regions of the Philippines.
