REP. FRANCISCO “LALO” MATUGAS WELCOMES SAYAK AIRPORT EXPANSION, THANKED DOTR SEC VINCE DIZON FOR SWIFT ACTION TO ADDRESS AIRPORT’S CONGESTION

SIARGAO ISLAND, Surigao del Norte – Surigao del Norte First District Representative Francisco “Lalo” Matugas expressed strong support for the Department of Transportation’s plan to expand Sayak Airport in Siargao Island, following the announcement by DOTr Secretary VInce Dizon.

“This is a transformative step for Siargao,” Rep. Matugas stated. “The airport upgrade will not only accommodate the growing number of tourists but also open doors for economic growth and job creation across the island.”

In his recent announcement, the DOTr secretary said that the groundbreaking for the Siargao Airport’s expansion will be facilitated on Friday, August 8.

When completed, the expansion will be able to increase the capacity of the airport to handle more than 750 passengers compared to its present capacity of 200.

The Siargao Airport also facilitates around 18 flights a day.

Siargao, known globally for its pristine beaches and surfing spots, has seen a surge in both domestic and international visitors.

“The improved airport infrastructure is expected to enhance travel efficiency, attract more investments, and strengthen the island’s position as a top-tier destination,” Rep. Matugas said.

The Siargao solon also emphasized his commitment to working with national agencies to ensure the project’s success, highlighting its potential to uplift local livelihoods and promote sustainable development.

“This is more than just an infrastructure project—it’s a promise of progress for every Siargaonon,” he added.
