It is easy to blind one's eyes with the empty promises of raining cash, or fall into the pits of an endless financial dilemma.

Truncated chimes of message notifications, and the staggering amount of malicious pop-up ads easily make its way to your glowing screen, ready for that one click. Waiting impatiently to scram with your personal details.

The petrifying nature of false promises that most of us mistaken for good deals, paints the portrait of the masses in need of financial awareness.

But there's solace in the thought of others' effort, a light shed for the financially vulnerable, the warmth of a helping hand โ€” the beginning of the ABM-TVL's Financial Literacy Campaign.

The True Cost of the Philippinesโ€™ Failing Agricultural Preparedness

It should come as no surprise that the Philippines experiences typhoons each year. Nevertheless, we observe the same pattern each time a storm occurs. Consumers suffer, prices skyrocket, and the Department of Agriculture (DA) scrambles. Why? Because our agricultural sector is dreadfully unprepared for issues that are even predictable. We don't have the government backing, funding, or infrastructure necessary to establish a sustainable food supply. Consumers bear the expense while farmers are left behind with little defense, resources, or support.

Let's face it, in a nation like the Philippines, where typhoons frequently strike our coastlines, natural disasters are inevitable. However, the truthโ€”that the farm industry lacks the resilience it needsโ€”is being concealed by these frequent weather disruptions, which have become acceptable excuses. We lack adequate investment, infrastructure, and dependable assistance for farmers. Instead, consumers suffer from soaring costs while farmers are left to fend for themselves.
Enough is enough. We're sick of excuses based on the weather. As a result of decades of neglect, our agricultural system is actually weak.

When will the government prioritize investing in resilient crop varieties, constructing appropriate storage, and providing farmers with the necessary equipment to withstand severe storms? When will they invest in the mechanisms that could stop shortages and price increases? Instead of being just another weather report; the DA's warning ought to serve as a wake-up call. This cycle of foreseeable failure will continue in the absence of substantive, structural reform.

Demanding an agricultural system that functions for all Filipinos throughout the year, not only for a week or two following a stormโ€” is time. Every Filipino should take note of the DAโ€™s most recent warning concerning rising vegetable costs. The fundamental concern is why we are always warned to prepare for higher food costs following every typhoon, even if it is true that storms and weather disruptions naturally impact crop production. Is the weather really to blame for this, or are we?

In the bustling world of academics, the more ignitable you are, the more piping-hot your marks will beโ€”but if you get ahead of yourself, you'll eventually combust and fall behind. It's undeniably easy to fall victim to the flames of the burning carousel, a self-consuming ride that turns and veers endlessly to no avail. But despite the burnout we experience, why do we keep on riding its horses? is it the thrill of it all? the crave to be the apex student? or the validation that comes with it?

Whatever may be the reason, it's important not to let the drive to learn and aiming for high grades damage your inner peace, more so with your physical and mental health. Fortunately for Cor Jesians, after months of trailblazing and coffee dinners, this week was declared as the school's mental health break!

Students are encouraged to dedicate this time to unwind, focus on their health, and most importantly, ease their thoughts. This gives them the opportunity to catch up with their comfort shows, or maybe even try new hobbies! Then again, It's necessary to remember that above all things, we are humansโ€”born not just to learn, but also to live. The next time you fail a test or go beyond the deadline, be more kind to yourself, and do better but with a more positive outlook!

And whenever you find yourself scorching on the burning carousel, don't hesitate to say this oration: the grades aren't my lifeline, nor my weapon, but the mind is.

Winds scream and waters ruffle as the grey clouds paint people's smiles with a familiar dark hue. When that darkness encapsulates us in a wet peril, you know it's that time of year again.

It's undeniable that tropical storm "Kristine" really did numbers to us, causing immense damage in many parts of the country. Albeit PAGASA reporting that the said storm has already left the PAR, echoes of its wrath still linger in the tender hearts of our fellow countrymen and unfortunately, it's an inevitable, beating pain. With the Philippines' inconvenient position of being the Pacific ocean's next-door neighbor, it's never not present in the gossip that a series of tropical storms constantly sets foot on our land, wiping out any buzz of life that dares to face it. Sometimes it plagues us periodically, or even back to back, but it ultimately is something we are forced to endure yearlyโ€” like an unbreakable curse, an unescapable boxing ring.

Fortunately for us Filipinos though, we're really just built different. Amidst the murky waters of flood, a blazing glow of the indomitable Filipino spirit surfs the tides. Like a reversed Santelmo, it serves as a beacon of hope, offering its helping hands to hush the trembles of the unfortunate. This spirit manifests itself in many ways, and an ever-popular one will always be the "bayanihan."

During the height of the storm, many brave volunteers traversed through the downpour to rescue citizens who weren't able to evacuate, leaving no man, or animal, behind. Local organizations and charitable individuals have also dedicated their time in helping raise funds for those in need of necessities, and keeping close eyes on the storm, giving updates on the dot to those concerned of the situation. With the act of compassion pulsing their cause, it's clear that while the big guns slouch and the ignorant close their eyes, it's the underdogs that work to make this "bayanihan" not just be seen, but also felt.

Tears are shed and gone are the smiles when the storm sweeps every soul's hope away, but even in times like this where it seems like faith is now the only thing to be clinging on, don't let it drown you down the deeps even further. The indomitable Filipino spirit is strong, and it's in the faces of those who make no hesitation to help you, painting your pouts with a familiar hue of resilience. So when the fortunate give back, the brave offers their hands, and your smile finally comes back, you know it's that time of year again.

Antarctica greens amid unfamiliar vegetation growth

Grappling with shriveled leaves, half-cut trees, and wilted flowers, all man hopes to see is green. Antarctica, however, yearns for its once barren, icy, and almost entirely free-from-greenery environment, a state in which Earthโ€™s southernmost continent was in years before the spike of climate change and global warming.

It is a common misconception to believe climate change is entirely manโ€™s doing. When in fact, from the beginning of the universe, climate change has existed and will only continue to intensify. There is simply nothing mankind can do to reverse what it has come to. However, there are ways to mitigate and delay further implications. Those ways, unfortunately, have been overlooked and worsened through human activity, resulting in rapid negative consequences. Included in such is the โ€˜greeningโ€™ of Earthโ€™s scenic blank canvasโ€“ Antarctica.

A scientific investigation headed by researchers from the universities of Exeter and Hertfordshire, and the British Antarctic Survey revealed Antarctica's deteriorating side as it started to turn green in response to the increasing global temperatures. The continent, whose surroundings are still mostly covered in ice and snow, has been rapidly turning green, according to their observations.

With the use of satellite data to view the environment from a bigger perspective above, British scientists found that the vegetation, or the presence of plant species, in the Antarctic Peninsula, has surpassed its conditions from four decades ago by tenfold.

Specifically, the vegetation of a part of the peninsula measured at less than one square kilometer back in 1986, drastically grew to almost twelve square kilometers in 2021. Stunned at the greening rate of the supposed icy continent, Dr. Thomas Roland from the University of Exeter stated he, along with the rest of his team, was equally as shocked at the unfortunate news.

Although well-established that man has been the number one contributor to the crumbling ecosystem as reflected in several contexts, Dr Olly Bartlett from the University of Hertfordshire added that it is the rate at which the greenery in Antarctica is expanding that concerns him the most.

Antarcticaโ€™s fertile grounds increasingly being unearthed may result in higher chances of invasive, harmful species inhabiting the area as well. According to the scientists, the now 800-mile area in which the greening can be observed is the amount of Antarctic land at risk of being polluted with the said unwelcomed species.

Though soil in Antarctica is almost entirely nonexistent, its only supposed vegetation thrives on rocks and such. However, the increase in plant life will add organic matter and allow soil to form. According to Dr. Bartlett, the existence of more plants may seem fortunate but in this case, a medium in which non-native, and potentially invasive species can form, compromising Antarctic lands.

It was only last year, 2023 when scientists observed the blooming of flowers on Signy Island, Antarctica, a mere fraction of the greenery at present. As such, the continent has been crying for reinforcements even further back.

Dr. Roland highlights the urgency of climate change, noting its profound impact even in the coldest, most unforgiving regions of the world. He stresses the importance of taking meaningful action, promoting cooperation, and ensuring accountability in addressing the planetโ€™s current environmental crisis.

What might appear as a natural bloom masks the deeper threat to the continent's delicate ecosystem, as rising temperatures invite invasive species and reshape its once inhospitable landscape. Though damages are already far from reversible, there remains an urgent need for collective action to slow the tide of these changes while still possible. As spring unwelcomingly visits the polar ice caps, flowers bloom, but at the cost of a broken Antarctica.

Dr. Chenie Gonzales, CJC-BED Senior High School Assistant School Principal, was selected for a Quipper-sponsored three-day tour of Japan, an opportunity to reflect on and enhance teaching strategies for Filipino educators while strengthening ties between the two educational powerhouses.

Together with Dr. Gonzales were administrators from other private schools who were chosen to be part of the Quipper Teachers Philippines team, who embarked on the journey across Japan to learn about the countryโ€™s innovative educational strategies and holistic approach to student development. These elements contribute to Japanโ€™s reputation as a leader in academic excellence.

The team visited Osaka, Japanโ€™s third-largest city and a commercial hub known for its food, fun, and nightlife, as well as Kyoto, famous for its temples, shrines, and gardens. They explored notable tourist destinations such as the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and Nara Deer Park.

The group also toured the Umeda Sky Building, where Dr. Gonzales and her team admired the โ€œseamless integration of technology in daily lifeโ€ which they likened to Quipperโ€™s digital learning tools.

As the trip focused on enhancing Filipino educators' teaching strategies, the team visited several schools, with members split into groups to choose which institutions to observe. Dr. Gonzalesโ€™s group visited two schools: Hatsushiba Tondabayashi Junior and Senior High School, a private institution, and Tondabayashi Junior and Senior High School, a public school.

She noted that students were trained with discipline and independence, and even public-school classrooms were well-equipped, highlighting Japanโ€™s educational prowess.

โ€œOne of the things I admired in Japanโ€™s education system is the integration of their culture into the curriculum,โ€ Dr. Gonzales said.

The team also met Japanese educators, a meeting that Mdm. Gonzales described as โ€œfruitful and inspiring,โ€ as they learned how Japanese teachers maintain discipline and structure while incorporating innovative educational tools.

โ€œThis benchmarking opportunity allowed us Filipino educators to reflect on new strategies and best practices that can be adapted to enhance educational quality back in the Philippines, at least in our respective schools,โ€ Dr. Gonzales said after she witnessed the unique blend of academic rigor and moral education of Japan.

Mdm. Gonzales plans to apply the strategies she learned there, such as establishing simple systems of discipline and maintaining a firm grasp on consistency as a policy in education.

On the final day of the trip, they paid a highly-anticipated visit to the headquarters of Quipper Philippinesโ€™ parent company, Recruit, at its main office in Japan. There, they learned even more practices and strategies to further strengthen collaboration between the two countries in promoting quality education.

In a significant educational milestone, 134 junior high school students from Cor Jesu College, Inc., one of three private schools selected to participate in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), recently took a pre-test designed to measure students' scientific knowledge.

The PISA, developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), evaluates the ability of 15-year-olds to apply their knowledge and skills to real-life challenges. The results from this pre-test will serve as baseline data, helping educators understand the studentsโ€™ current competencies.

Following the pre-test, a series of coaching sessions, lesson integrations, and reviews will be implemented to better prepare students for the final PISA, scheduled for March 2025. In addition, English, Math, and Science teachers will undergo specialized training to align classroom instruction with PISA competencies.
