Today, we pay tribute to an extraordinary figure whose contributions to Philippine cinema and journalism have left an indelible mark. Joseph Israel Laban was an award-winning filmmaker, writer, and documentarist whose visionary work transcended boundaries and earned him acclaim on both national and international stages.
Born on March 9, 1981, in Boac, Marinduque, Laban's academic and professional journey was distinguished by excellence and dedication. He was a Fulbright Scholar with a masterโs degree in documentary filmmaking from New York University and a Bachelorโs degree in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines Diliman. His educational background provided a strong foundation for his remarkable career.
Laban's impact was profoundly felt through his films and documentaries. His directorial debut, โCucheraโ (2011), and the acclaimed โNuwebeโ (2013) showcased his storytelling prowess, with โNuwebeโ earning him the Best Director award at the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards. His film โBaconauaโ (2017) further solidified his reputation, winning Best Director at Cinemalaya and receiving recognition at the Busan International Film Festival.
In addition to his cinematic achievements, Laban made significant contributions to journalism. His work as a producer and director for Channel News Asiaโs Get Real!, his contributions to The New York Times Video Unit, and his role as the founder of the CineTotoo Philippine Documentary Film Festival demonstrated his commitment to impactful storytelling.
