NEWS FEATURE | FAN-tastic help against scorching heat

As the heat in Sapang Palay National High School scorches day-by-day, these two teachers had an innovative way to help with it — providing free fans to their students.

MAPEH Department teacher-couples Lallaine Manuel-Charlon and Arnel Charlon made an initiative which was gaining rounds on social media.

"Sobrang init sa mga classrooms at nagkakasakit na ang mga bata pati mga teachers. Wala naman magawa kasi natapat na may pasok padin ang summer," Ms. Lallaine said in her Facebook post.

"Mga anak, munting pamaypay lang ang kayang ibigay ni Ma'am at Sir. Pero nawa, ito ay maging tulong kahit papaano na maibsan ang init na nararamdaman ninyo tuwing may klase," she added.

In an interview with The Pillar, she cited that the problems they face in the summer heat are students having cough and colds, paving way for the project to push through.

"Hindi na sila maka-focus minsan sa discussion kasi iritable sila sa sobrang init. Kaya nag-isip po kami kung paano ba kami makakatulong sa problemang ito. Kaya po nag-come up kami sa idea na bumili ng mga pamaypay na sa tingin namin ay makakatulong kahit papaano na maibsan ung init na kanilang pinagdadaanan," she uttered.

Moreover, the project was not made possible without the help of her husband as well as her former students.

Ms. Lallaine also said that the teachers and other personnel should be proactive in solving this issue, making small initiatives like what they have done "would bring a huge impact to learners."

"Sana po ay may maging hakbang tayo sa pagtugon dito dahil malaki ang impact nito sa mga bata," she said.

She ended with, "umisip ng mga pamamaraan kung paano ba ang magandang gawin sa mga panahon na 'yon na tumapat ang klase sa Summer season."

Literally, this month is like a "hell month" to us, given the fact that the summer heat makes us uncomfortable in our classrooms. But like Ma'am Lallaine and Sir Arnel, we can withstand the problem through having a helping hand.

On this day marks the 37th anniversary of a harmless revolt that put a light at the end of the tunnel.

The EDSA People Power Revolution was held at the famous Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue where millions of activists, nuns, and even government officials gathered to call for an end of the tenure of then-President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., paving a way for the presidency of his successor, Corazon C. Aquino, who was dubbed as "Mother of Democracy".

Let this event in the history be a reminder that we should fight for what is the truth and right, as this is one of the citizen's privileges which the government must heed.

What's Not to Like About Valentine's Day?

It's the moment we've all been waiting for! Let's explore the language of love in observance of the festival.

Valentine's Day may be associated with romance, but it doesn't precisely describe how the holiday came to be. You might not be aware of the Valentine's Day history.

The yearly holiday known as St. Valentine's Day honors all forms of love, including platonic and friendship relationships. Every February 14th is Valentine's Day. Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr, is honored on the holiday. Saint Valentine was a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the third century who is the inspiration behind Valentine's Day.

Many Romans were becoming Christians around the time of Valentine's Day. However, Emperor Claudius II decided that unmarried men, especially young men, made better soldiers than those who had wives or families. As a result, he forbade marriage for men. On the other hand, St. Valentine started to wed these soldiers in covert Christian ceremonies, and this is when his reputation for believing in the value of love began to grow.

When Valentine's deeds were found out, Claudius II commanded that he be executed. Valentine provided for his fellow prisoners while he was incarcerated, including his jailor's blind daughter, who paid him visits. A legend claims that Valentine healed the girl of her blindness and that he also sent her a letter addressed to her as "From your Valentine," a phrase that is still used today. Valentine was put to death on February 14th, 270.

His appeal as a compassionate, valiant, and most crucially—romantic person is emphasized in the stories. One of the most well-liked saints in England and France was now Valentine.

Again, Valentine's Day is not only for romance. You can simply write a card heartedly for your parents, family members, friends, and loved ones. Millions of Valentine's Day letters are sent out every year, making romantic love the most popular Valentine's Day association. It is rooted in love as well!
