10 pieces of advice for a new police wife | |

Your husband just graduated from the academy. He is excited, motivated and ready to hit the road running for his first shift! Days turn into weeks and you quickly realize this job is more than just sending off your husband in a sexy uniform. You are flooded with emotions and questions. Are you ready for this new life?

I surely was not when my police wife life began. I was proud of my husband, but advice and support for police wives was few and far between. I felt like I was drowning a little and my life raft was in view but I couldn’t reach it. I seriously wish I had a place to find information when this part of my life began. It shouldn’t be this way. Advice and support should be readily available for you all. It is especially hard when you haven’t met other police wives yet.

Well, you have come to the right place. We have the TOP advice from some pretty amazing fellow police wives about dealing with this new lifestyle of yours. Advice from veteran wives, other newbies, and in between.

10 PIECES OF ADVICE FOR A NEW POLICE WIFE THAT YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS:
1.Find your new normal. Life is going to be different now. Adjust your schedule the best you can. Meet for coffee dates in his cop car. Have your weekend dates during the week when he is off. Realize this is your life and it will be okay.
2.Never read the online comment sections. People are harsh. Stay in your little bubble and focus on supporting your husband and law enforcement. Don’t let those kind of things get to you.
3.Never leave each other angry. Resolve any issues before his shift starts. This is a good rule for marriage, period. But you especially don’t want your hubby starting a shift on the wrong foot. He needs a clear, level head.
3.Understand that not many people will understand the law enforcement lifestyle. It takes special people to live the first responder lifestyle. Sometimes, even your family will not understand. It is okay, just surround yourself with people who do understand.
4.Don’t watch the news while your husband is working. Seriously, just don’t! You will go crazy!
5.Learn to be a MRS. FIX-IT. YouTube will be your most used app on your phone. If your hubby isn’t home, some things just need to get done. Like changing the guts in a toilet, 8 months pregnant. Not joking.
6.Keep yourself busy. You can not spend the next 12+ hours while he is on shift thinking about what he is doing, what may happen, etc. Keeping your mind & body busy will keep you sane.
7.Don’t be upset if they don’t talk about the job. Sometimes they are processing what happened on shift. Sometimes they don’t want you to know what happened; they are protecting you. Don’t force the conversations. If they want to talk, they will.
8.Your life must GO ON! You must go to events alone or without him. You can’t put your life on hold because he is working. Fact is, your entire life would be on hold, for as long as he is a cop. Plan things, go to family gatherings without him, even holidays. It will get easier. I promise!
9.Love him hard. My personal favorite! Support each other, understand each other, love each other. 10.Do this and everything else will fall into place.
