Sibuyan Island, Romblon
Draco Mindanensis/Flying Lizard/ Flying Dragon
-Info-
Draco mindanensis, also known as the Mindanao flying lizard or the Mindanao flying dragon, is a species of lizard that is endemic to the Philippines, specifically on the island of Sibuyan in the Romblon province.
The species is known for its ability to glide from tree to tree using a patagium, a membrane of skin that extends from the sides of its body to its limbs. This patagium allows the lizard to control its direction and speed while in flight.
Draco mindanensis is a small lizard, measuring around 20-23 cm in total length, with males being slightly larger than females. Its body is flattened and elongated, with a slender tail that is longer than the body. Its coloration varies, but it is generally brown or gray with darker stripes or spots.
Like other species of the genus Draco, the Mindanao flying lizard feeds on insects, which it catches while in flight or on tree trunks. It is also arboreal, spending most of its time in trees and other vegetation.
Unfortunately, like many other species of flora and fauna in the Philippines, Draco mindanensis is considered to be endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, and collection for the pet trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the species and its habitat.
