"LALAKI SA BINTANA"
Gabi na at handa na akong magpahinga nang biglang may kumatok sa bintana. Ang mukha ng isang estrangherong lalaki ang bumungad sa akin. Kinabahan ako at tinanong ko kung ano ang kailangan niya.

"Saan po ba ang Phase 3?" ito agad ang tanong din niya saakin.

"Malay ko ba? Hindi ko din alam iyan," sagot ko habang kinukuha ang aking cellphone para maghanda na kunan siya ng litrato, sakaling may masamang balak. Pero nauna siyang magpaliwanag.

"Kasi po sasakay ako ng tren papuntang Lucena," sabi niya.
"Sa tita ko po. Umalis kasi ako sa trabaho. Tatlong linggo na akong hindi pinapasahod. Recruit lang ako dito sa Manila."

Habang nagsasalita siya, naramdaman ko ang lungkot at gutom sa kanyang mga mata. Wala siyang pera at hindi pa kumakain mula umaga.

Nakahanda naman ang kaunting kanin at lutong adobong atay na ulam sana namin ng asawa ko. Sinabi ko kay Ricardo, ang aking asawa, na pakainin siya ngunit huwag papasukin sa bahay.

"Pakainin mo siya, pero dito lang sa labas," sabi ko ko sa aking asawa. Binigyan namin siya ng pagkain at habang kumakain siya, halatang-halata sa kanyang mukha ang pagod at gutom.

"Salamat po, ate," sabi niya habang naglalakad papalayo. "Pupunta pa po ako ng SM Fairview para makarating sa Blumentritt. Lalakarin ko na lang po."

Napakalayo ng destinasyon niya para lakarin. Naawa ako at binigyan ko siya ng 370 pesos, ang natitirang barya sa aking pitaka. Tumanggi siya at sinabing sapat na ang pagkain na naibigay namin.

Naisip ko na baka totoo ang sinasabi niya kaya binigyan ko na lang siya ng ilang cup noodles at sky flakes. "Ito, baon mo. Para kung magutom ka sa daan, may makakain ka."

Habang naglalakad siya papalayo, hindi ko maiwasang magtanong sa sarili ko, "Bakit may mga taong mapanlamang sa kapwa? Bakit siya dinala sa Manila at pinatrabaho nang walang sahod?"

Nakakalungkot na may mga taong hindi naaawa sa kapwa tao nila. Sana makarating siya sa tita niya at makauwi ng ligtas sa kanilang probinsya sa Samar.

Naging aral sa akin ang gabing iyon na kahit sa simpleng paraan, maari tayong maging tulay para sa pag-asa ng iba.

The photo shows a fast race between dogs and a cheetah, the goal was to see who was the fastest. Everyone was surprised that the cheetah did not budge from its place. We asked the race coordinator what happened.
