SCIENCE NEWS | EUGENIANS TACKLE TODAY'S EARTHQUAKE DRILL WITH NOTABLE PROGRESS

Eugenians participates in the 4th Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) today, November 14 at 9:00 a.m.

Red Cross Youth (RCY) Vice President, Michelle Chucas, stated that compared to the last NSED that took 2 minutes and 31 seconds, students were able to move faster, which took 1 minute and 34 seconds only, thus indicating Eugenian's improvement with their awareness and criticality in handling earthquake drills.

She also discussed the importance of participating in earthquake drills— it is to prepare everyone for upcoming disasters.

No progress is small progress. Every step forward counts. Let this be a path towards a safe and and secured shelter for all.

COLUMN/RESONANCE | Hands that Feed, Hearts that Bleed

Imagine what our country could become if we created an environment where farmers not only survive but thrive, where Filipino children gaze upon the fields with hope instead of despair.

As we celebrate Peasant Month this October, let us remember that this is more than just a celebration to honor our farmers; it is a reminder of the blatant disrespect and ridicule they continue to endure at the hands of these landlords. Those who selflessly work to feed us are often the first to go hungry— a reality that those in power have sought to overshadow for decades.

It is evident that agriculture has long been the backbone of our country; yet, this sector faces the highest poverty rates, leaving farmers in a constant state of fight or flight, unsure if they can plant for the next season or if they will ever witness their children graduate all while trying to make ends meet.

Furthermore, many Filipino farmers still lack secure access to land. Agrarian reform in our country has been painfully slow, plagued by government delays.

For countless farmers, the right to own land has become nothing more than a broken promise, compelling them to endure a system that benefits the few at the expense of many. This reality is not a choice but a necessity, as they often find themselves vulnerable to violence if they resist.

I strongly believe that the government often places too much emphasis on international relationships and trade agreements, operating under the misconception that the global market will drive economic growth. However, this approach consistently overlooks our farmers, who face immense challenges without the support they rightfully deserve.

Truth is—those in power are too focused on their own agendas to notice the suffering of the very individuals who keep the country running.

It is indeed about time for us to be heard regarding the implementation of policies that prioritize agriculture by ensuring farmers have access to modern technology and training. Additionally, the government must provide direct subsidies for farmers to support their work. Above all, farmers deserve ownership to the land they have cultivated for generations, have a say in its management, and finally enjoy the fruits of their labor.

At the end of the day, the fate of our farmers is deeply intertwined with the fate of our nation—when they thrive, we all thrive. Justice and prosperity for our farmers are not acts of charity; they are long-overdue rights. It is time for all Filipinos to stand with them—not just for a month, but for a lifetime.

SCIENCE | A SHAKE THAT MAKES EUGENIANS AWAKE

Duck, Cover, and Hold, an earthquake drill’s trifold

The Philippines’ relationship with earthquakes has always been shaky. The preparations for ‘’The Big One’’ continues, as we reach the third quarter of the year’s Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED). Following the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Memorandum No. 090, 8.2023, the country is urged to participate in the drill.

Yesterday, September 26, 2024, Eugenians partook in the drill on their beloved school grounds, completing two simulations and a brief reminder on earthquake safety precautions led by the Red Cross Youth Club (RCY) in collaboration with ELJTV and THEATROGENIO.

These drills are to ensure that everyone is all steady and well-prepared for the possible disasters looming just around a tectonic plate border.

Fall in line and you will be fine

This year, it took 2 minutes and 31 seconds for the students to go down the building and line up on the grounds, which was longer than the school’s record last year. That being the case, the School Disaster and Risk Reduction Management (SDRRM) Coordinator, Angelo Confiado suggested that we should attempt to do it faster than last time.

‘’We need to prepare, obviously, for “The Big One’’ kahit na wala pa siya. Hindi natin siya kaya i-predict kung kailan ito mangyayari, kaya we are always preparing for that.’’

When asked what Eugenians could improve more, the SDRRM Coordinator, Confiado replied — “Siguro, for this year’s NSED, ang naiisip ko na pwedeng i-improve ay yung communication, dahil may mga Grade 11 na bagong estudyante, na medyo confused pa sa roles nila kung saan sila e-exit at kung anong gagawin nila. So, binibigyan din namin ng allowance… medyo matagal yung kanina compared sa time namin last year. ’’

He added that since September, the points and reminders for future earthquake drills have already been planned with RCY along with the collaboration between ELJTV and Theatro that showcased possible scenarios that students might encounter during calamities.

Realities during calamities

Quarterly earthquake drills are important to ensure that when the ground shakes, the soul stays. And over here as a Eugenian, we would like that.

Earthquake drills are always to be conducted with great care, as the littlest faults can cause the biggest tragedies.

Just like what Edilberto Seguin, the Administrative Officer of the school has mentioned, “Do it right as if it’s really happening.”
