On March 7, 1998, the league honored Coach Sonny "Big J" Jaworski, who celebrated his 52nd birthday in advance at the Araneta Coliseum while announcing his candidacy for the Senate. Following this, on March 30, 1998, Jaworski took a leave of absence from his position as head coach of Gordon's Gin to dedicate his efforts to his senatorial campaign. Then, on August 11, 1998, he declared his intention to focus on his responsibilities as a newly-elected senator, thereby appointing assistant coach Rino Salazar to manage the Ginebra team. Finally, on December 3, 1998, Jaworski resigned as head coach of Ginebra in response to the management's decision to appoint Allan Caidic as the assistant coach of the team.

The image below captures an intense showdown for the ball between Ginebra's rookie Dondon Ampalayo and Tanduay's import, Andre McKoy, during the 1986 PBA Reinforced Conference.

Ampalayo, who was picked third overall in the 1986 Rookie Draft, really made a name for himself that year by winning the Rookie of the Year award and a spot on the Mythical Second Team. This season kicked off an exciting new rivalry between Ginebra San Miguel and Tanduay Rhum Makers as the Crispa-Toyota era came to an end.

Both teams clinched their first championships that season, with Ginebra winning the Open Conference and Tanduay dominating in the Reinforced and All-Filipino Conferences.

In 1984, the veteran Francis "Kiko" Arnaiz rookie Ernesto "Joey" Loyzaga squared off in a memorable game between Gilbeys and Gold Eagle Beer. Both captivated fans with their attractive Spanish mestizo appearance. Their paths crossed again when Joey (along with his brother Chito) joined Ginebra San Miguel in 1986, becoming teammates with Kiko. His captivating charisma, scoring prowess, and flair for showmanship deeply resonated with the Filipino audience, leading to an endorsement deal with the shoe manufacturer Grosby. Bates initially played for Crispa before joining Ginebra San Miguel, where he partnered with fellow import Michael Hackett to secure Ginebra's inaugural PBA title in the 1986 Open Conference. However, Bates faced significant challenges in his personal life due to his extravagant lifestyle, involvement in womanizing, and drug use. His final PBA game on October 13, 1988, saw him scoring only 16 points as Añejo suffered a defeat against Presto Ice Cream, amidst a city-wide blackout that prevented the game from being televised or broadcasted. Bates was subsequently replaced by Tommy Davis on October 16, 1988, marking the conclusion of his PBA career. Despite the ups and downs, Bates left an indelible mark on Philippine basketball history, holding the record for the highest average points per game at 46.2 points across 98 career games.
