In 2019, a shipping executive named Artemio Serafico faced a dangerous situation that took him far from his comfortable office. One of the ships managed by the company was attacked by pirates near Lagos, Nigeria. Most of the crew managed to hide in a safe room, but one crew member failed to join the rest of the crew and was captured by the pirates.

𝗔 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀

It was supposed to be a regular day for the crew at sea. However, as they sailed near Lagos, Nigeria, their ship was boarded by pirates. The crew, upon hearing the alarm, quickly hid in the citadel, a secure room designed to keep them safe during attacks. Unfortunately, one crew member couldn't make it inside and was taken hostage by the pirates. The pirates then made contact after 45 days and their demands are clear: comply or face severe consequences.

𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗼: 𝗔 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗨𝗽

Artemio Serafico, known for his calm and strategic mind in the office, suddenly found himself in an extraordinary situation. Without hesitation, he accepted the shipowner’s request and traveled to Nigeria to participate in the negotiations for the crew member's release on behalf of the ship owner and the ship management company. He understood that true leadership sometimes means stepping out of your comfort zone and facing danger head-on.

𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲

When Serafico arrived in Nigeria, he faced many challenges. Lagos was a city struggling with civil unrest and economic problems, making it a risky place to be. Despite these dangers, Serafico stayed focused on his mission. He worked tirelessly with negotiating team in communicating with the pirates and local authorities, trying to comply with the demands of the captors to be able to free the captive crew member.

Serafico knew he had to be both firm and understanding with the daily changes in the demands of the pirates.

His goal was clear: bring the crew member home safely. It is also clear in his mind that how he handled this situation would impact the company's reputation and the safety of the crew.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Serafico didn't just meet the pirates' demands; he tried to understand them. He showed them that he genuinely cared about the crew member's safety. His determination and empathy slowly built trust, leading to a breakthrough in negotiations.

𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻

After days of intense talks, Serafico's efforts paid off. The kidnapped crew member was released unharmed. The emotional reunion with their family highlighted the success of Serafico's daring mission.

𝗔 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁

Artemio Serafico's journey to Nigeria is more than a story of bravery; it shows the importance of leadership based on empathy and determination. He risked his safety to protect his crew, setting an example for others in the corporate world.

In business, leadership is often measured by achievements and numbers. But Serafico's story reminds us that real leadership is about caring for others and taking risks to ensure their well-being. His actions not only saved a life but also set a new standard for leading with integrity and compassion.

Today, the shipping industry faces new challenges, such as the persistent attacks on merchant ships by Iran-backed Houthis in the Red Sea. These attacks have caused widespread fear among seafarers, with many refusing to sail through the Red Sea. This crisis underscores the need for leaders who prioritize the safety and well-being of their crew above all else.

As we consider the current situation, the decision to take longer, safer routes, such as bypassing the Red Sea by sailing around Cape Town, might not be beneficial for charterers or ship owners in terms of fuel costs and travel time. However, the lives and well-being of the crew are invaluable and should never be compromised for the sake of convenience or profit.

Artemio Serafico's story teaches us that protecting our crew is the most important responsibility of any leader. His example shows that true leadership involves making difficult decisions to ensure the safety of others, even if it means facing personal risk or incurring higher costs. As attacks on merchant ships continue, we must remember our commitment to our crew and strive to prioritize their safety over business expediency.

By taking the longer, safer route around Cape Town, we demonstrate that the lives of our seafarers are our top priority. This decision may not be the most cost-effective, but it is the right one. As the shipping industry navigates these perilous times, let us be guided by the principles of empathy, determination, and integrity that Artemio Serafico embodied, ensuring that the safety and well-being of our crew always come first.
