Pangandaman recently hosted a municipal-wide coaching and mentoring session, marking a significant stride in fostering the next generation of campus journalists.

The event, which catered not only to qualifiers of the upcoming Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) but also to those non-qualifiers eager to refine their journalistic skills, was a remarkable display of collective learning and growth.

An impressive array of speakers from 'An Lantawan', experienced coaches, and past Special Program in Journalism (SPJ) students graced the event, sharing their insights and expertise across different areas of journalism.

The two-day event, which kicked off on Saturday, April 27, delved into various categories of journalism. The first day began with a workshop on Editorial writing, led by Troy Ortega, the Editor-in-Chief of LNUโ€™s 'An Lantawan'. This was followed by a session on News writing conducted by Ronald Reyes.

The third session was on Feature writing, spearheaded by Joyce Yongque. Marissa German then took the attendees through the nuances of Sci-tech writing. Sports writing, a dynamic and energetic field, was tackled by Kirby Lagare.

The second day of the event brought more learning opportunities. Marnel Justin Pedrosa shared his insights on Photojournalism, followed by Marielle Hernali discussing the intricacies of Column/Opinion writing. The final session was on Editorial Cartooning, conducted by Khyress Macalalad.

The event also featured a live simulation of TV Broadcasting, providing participants with a real-time exposure to the fast-paced world of broadcast journalism.

The event concluded with the awarding of certificates of appreciation to all the attendees, a token of gratitude for their enthusiasm and commitment to honing their journalistic skills. The municipal-wide coaching and mentoring session was indeed a testament to Pangandaman's dedication to nurturing it

"I honestly don't know what to feel," former Palonian and Feature writer of Ang Duyan, Gwyneth Hermoso said after she ranked third among 6680 passers nationwide in the civil engineering licensure exam, last April 20-21 at Mabolo, Cebu.

Hermoso was a student of Palo National High School (PNHS), who according to her former teachers was shy yet competitive, and described her as an ambitious young woman, from a very young age up until now that she is already 23.

"She's just quiet, the typical Hermoso characteristic, but she's really competitive",said Maurice Dave Ansula, the adviser of Hermoso when she was in 10th grade.

Ansula added that Hermoso has an artistic side, which made her stand out and earned her the position of a feature writer for Ang Duyan.

"During the review, the hardest thing for me was to start. There isn't a day that I donโ€™t push myself to get up and start reviewing,"said Hermoso.

Hermoso added that she felt guilty about lying around whenever she saw her fellow reviewers pouring their hearts out reviewing, which led her to constantly doubt her abilities.

"During the exam, I had mixed feelings, especially with the first subject, which was MSTE,"said Hermoso.

While taking the exam, she thought of the time she spent studyingโ€”which boosted her eagerness to finish and pass this exam to not waste the time and effort she dedicated to studying for the said exam.

She said she struggled with the MSTE (Mathematics Surveying and Transportation Engineering) subject, only being able to solve 30 out of the 75 problems the first time around. Nevertheless, she was keen to finish answering every question in order to increase her chances of passing.

Hermoso was determined to perfect all the questions under the second subject, which was HGE (Hydraulics and Geotechnical Engineering), yet it all crumbled down when she saw that she had incorrect answers.

After the first day, she asked herself if she would still push through in taking this exam, and thought that she would surely failโ€”yet she wanted to make it pass, and not waste the time and effort she poured on that said day.

According to her, the second day of taking the exam got her stressed because she claimed that some of the questions that came out were the ones she had not yet mastered.

Even with the stress and anxiety she felt before and during the exam, itโ€™s incomparable to the feeling of finally making it through. According to her, she never forgot to pray to the almighty, begging to receive his wisdom and transfer everything she studied to her paper.

"I feel insanely proud, I saw firsthand the late nights she spent for it. Overall, it's just a very happy moment," said Kyla Hermoso, her sister.

Hermoso wants to extend her gratitude to her family who continued supporting her financially and emotionally, and her teachers, mentors, and reviewers who stood by her side and guided her throughout her whole academic journey.

Hermoso also wants to show her appreciation to her boyfriend, Kant, who kept her sane throughout the whole reviewing process and helped her with the topics she found challenging.

"To my friends, for continuously checking up on me and for boosting my confidence, that I can finish what I had started. And lastly, to Almighty God, for His provisions and guidance. Without Him, this would not be possible," Hermoso added.

In an effort to lessen the financial burdens faced by students in Brgy. Cavite West Palo, Leyte, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) council has launched a Free Printing Services program. This initiative aims to provide students access to printing educational materials, such as assignments and research papers, without the added expense.

In an age where technology plays a vital role in education, this service is particularly valuable for Palonians, as it offers a practical solution to the challenges posed by limited financial resources. By making printing services readily available within the barangay, students can focus more on their studies and worry less about the associated costs.

Solar superstorm approaches the Earth
By: Gian Carlo C. Fulminar

Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) also known as Solar storms happens when the sun releases a burst of solar energy and magnetic waves in the solar system. With increasing activity by the sun every second, scientists predicted that a Solar Super Storm will hit Earth by 2025 and will impact the Earth's technology and the people living in it.

With the school's high reliance on technology to function, educators and students must understand the risk of this calamity..

Weak eruptions of solar energy can cause a geomagnetic storm on Earth like the Aurora borealis, strong solar storms on the other hand are rare but they can cause massive havoc like the most intense geomagnetic storm also known as the Carrington Event that happened in 1859, where it created a strong auroral displays that was reported globally and caused sparks and even fires in multiple telegraph stations.

In the past few years, advancements in space weather monitors have enabled scientists to better monitor the activity of the sun and it is seen that solar flares can disrupt the communication and internet activities of people when they collide with the Earth's magnetic field.

The threat in this tragedy remains unspoken because there is no specific day that the storm will hit. Schools nowadays highly rely on the internet and technology in educating their learners, and the effect of solar storms on the school will be plenty.
Schools are already taking steps to prepare for the possibility of a solar storm hitting the Earth. Preparing for this storm includes creating an emergency plan when the communication and technology are not in their range. The schools also should educate learners about the possibility of a solar storm hitting the Earth so that students themselves are also prepared.

Printing modules may or may not be the best solution in this situation but doing this can educate learners even without the use
of technology since there is a high chance of the internet disappearing for a long time. Modular learning can introduce students to self-studying and it can also make students understand things on their own since there are no classmates nor teachers they can ask to.

The Impact of a Solar Storm is beyond technological disruption. This event can also cause mental problems such as anxiety and uncertainty due to the electromagnetic waves given by the sun. Therefore, the school should not only focus on physical preparation but also should prepare mentally and they should also provide support and reassurance to the school community.

As the possibility of a solar storm becomes higher, schools should take proactive steps to prepare the students and themselves for the potential disappearance of the internet and disruption of the technology they use.

Dasig Camp Ignites Passion in Journalism
By: Chelsea E. Dolina

As the two-day Dasig Journo camp kicked off, excitement and thrill hovered around the young journalists as they were ready to delve deeper into the world of journalism. Students were divided into four groups named Dig-on, Matibaksi, Paglaum, and Panalimbasog, forming a friendly competition in order to win the Dasig 2024 Journo Camp.

The event started with students brought together to gain knowledge from different speakers invited. Each speaker provided the most vital information to the students for the upcoming press conference. "As journalism students, this is one way to open their minds to the future of journalism," said Ronald Reyes with pride as he wished the students to bring journalism with them in the future.

As time flew by, the second day arrived. A mini press conference was held for students to feel what it's like in an actual press conference. Each team was determined to win in the individual categories to gain the most points. The event transitioned to a journalism quiz where competitiveness hovered around the students.

As the sun began to set, each team settled in their own respective tents, craving rest from the occasion. They were delighted when dinner was served and enjoyed the food in the grass field under the sunset.

The moon rose, and a bonfire was held where students formed a circle around it to feel the warmth under the breezy evening. Every group then presented their performance. Some sang as the beautiful melody swirled around the wind while the others danced to hip-shaking music.

With the long-awaited culmination, each team trembled with thrill as they announced the winners. Team Panalimbasog won first place, showcasing their hard work and passion followed by Team Matibaksi, securing the 2nd position. Team Paglaum earned 3rd place and finally, Team Dig-on got 4th place. Despite the loss and wins, each team was happy as they enjoyed this event. Under the moonlight, the young journalists savored the moment, cherishing this memorable night in their hearts.

Lighter Load on Teachers' Desks
Keziah Kae D. Apolo

โ€œThereโ€™s no tired like teacher tired,โ€ you might say that quote is exaggerated, but I believe it to be an understatement. As a student, I am well aware of the difficulties teachers face as a result of the additional responsibilities placed on their desks. Thankfully, the Department of Education released the Department Order 002 series of 2024 mandates the immediate removal of administrative tasks on public teachers --- a much-needed break for teachers overburdened with administrative tasks. I believe that this implementation is a sign for us to start shifting towards a positive educational environment.

Since my first day of high school, I've been confused as to why, on the first day of classes, teachers appear so worn out. Do they not look forward to seeing us? I had no idea. But as time goes on, and now that I'm in my eleventh grade, I feel sorry for the teachers rather than questioning why they appear stressed out. I have discovered that, even though we are enjoying the taste of the freedom of summer vacation, our teachers are still occupied with paperwork and other classroom duties in school.

Once, when I vented out to my Oral Communication teacher about the excessive homework load, she simply smiled and replied, "You're not alone." As I watched her surrounded by papers and a pen, I felt a bit guilty, even though she did not invalidate my feelings. I have no idea why, but I just thought that if I have 3 assignments to finish today, my teacher probably has six. And then I thought, โ€œWhen will she finish all of her paperwork? When will all the teachers finish their paperwork?โ€

I found the answer to that query when my adviser brought up the recent Department of Education directive. Vice President and Department of Education Sara Duterte signed the DepEd Order No. 002 on January 26 . According to her, DepEd believes that the "core of quality basic education is a vibrant and quality teaching workforce," as stated in the directive entitled "Immediate Removal of Administrative Tasks of Public School Teachers." Duterte stated that DepEd is still dedicated to enhancing the "delivery of quality basic education while promoting teacher quality and teacher welfare" under the MATATAG Agenda. To that aim, the agency issued guidelines on the immediate removal of administrative duties from public school teachers. The new directive, according to Duterte, is "guided by agency directions to remove the non-teaching tasks of teachers to give support to teachers to teach better."

The announcement of the DepEd order is a breath of relief for public school educators in the Philippines. It is a major step of the government to show awareness of the difficulties and challenges the educators experience in their daily tasks accompanied by their teaching. Teachers are humans too. The new administration should prioritize not only the studentsโ€™ well-being but also the teachers in order for our schools to have a healthy and supportive educational landscape.

During my nearly 5 years as a student, my teachers have been always supportive in guiding me towards improvement, not just intellectually but also in my personality. I owe a lot of who I am today thanks to their constant dedication. The enhancement of the quality of our education can be reached if we start fixing the inappropriate and unnecessary practices our teachers and students do. Learning flourishes best when minds are unburdened.

Teaching is not and will never be an easy or mediocre job. It involves lots of responsibilities accompanied by constant dedication to assisting students in achieving their goals. We should work together to achieve a healthier environment in our school classrooms. Our teachers are our second parents. That's why we need to continue to acknowledge the sacrifices our teachers make as they guide us towards our future. I hope that this DepEd order can finally be observed across all schools in the country.

Reviving Filipino spirit of โ€œBayanihanโ€ through volunteerism
By: Ariane Papistol and Marian German

A French couple, Philippe Cabot and Isabelle Gendron, who are volunteers for "Volunteer for Visayans Inc." offered their assistance to Palo National High School (PNHS), wherein they taught the Special Program in Arts (SPA) Bayle in ballroom dancing, and helped the school win gold medals in the Extravaganza, on February 28, 2024.

VFV coordinates numerous projects, including school programs, feeding programs, and children's sponsorship initiatives. The organization, which hosts volunteers from various countries like Australia, the UK, and Canada, assigns volunteers based on children's needs.

The couple began volunteering in 2008 after Gendron convinced her husband to join her in Central America, Guatemala, and by then they shifted their focus to the Philippines, most likely in Region VIII where they started teaching elementary children in Mohon, Tanauan but soon transitioned to teaching high school students at PNHS, where they volunteered for the third time.

โ€œTo change the world is through education and to influence students into being something far greater,โ€ Cabot, a programming engineer, said in an interview.

Additionally, both admitted that at first, they were wary of volunteering in the Philippines, mainly because the country is much more different than theirs---from the clothing to the food and most importantly, the people whom they learned greatly from, even if they were the one who played the role as teachers, โ€œThe Filipino peopleโ€™s hospitality is like a fresh air, and we learned countless lessons like values from these students,โ€ the couple said.

โ€œI often run into these volunteers and they radiate warmth every time, they always smile at me when we come across each other and I find that incredibly heartwarming,โ€ said Allen Repulda, a grade 10 student at PNHS.

Cabot and Gendron are professionals in ballroom dancing, but they also work as a Math teacher and a Computer Programming engineer respectively, until they came up with the idea to teach ballroom dancing to the students of SPA Bayle and document their progress during the lessons.

Recently, the couple hosted a Dance Sports Competition held at the Palo NHS Gymnasium on March 13, 2024. The event was a guaranteed success and this was one of the numerous contributions that the couple had for the school.

During an interview, they expressed how proud they feel while watching their students learn and improve, and they believe that this feeling cannot be described in words.

The couple has decided to travel to more cities, regions, and nations to share their knowledge and gain more insight into the local customs, cuisine, art, and most importantly, people they may encounter because of their departure in March after 3 months of teaching students of PNHS, and they also promised to keep the lessons they have learned and the memories they have made, captured not only on camera but also deeply ingrained in their hearts.

The couple's experience in the Philippines has been eye-opening, allowing them to better understand the harsh realities and challenges faced by the locals. Despite these challenges, they continue to do their part of volunteering while being struck by the joy, contagious smiles, and kindness of Filipinos.

Cabot and Gendron will continue to serve the school until their volunteering concludes in March, and then on, they will start anew. As they look forward to retiring and having more time to volunteer, they see these experiences as a way of giving back and helping make a difference.
