How the Cebuano Language Became the Main language of Pagadian Zamboanga del Sur.

In the early part of the 1900s, many Cebuanos arrived and settled in Pagadian Zamboanga del Sur. They brought along the Cebuano language. Later, other Filipinos from other parts of the Philippines who also settled in Pagadian, like the Ilocanos and Tagalog, also adapted and learned to speak the Cebuano language.

This is the pattern of Cebuano migration that led to the Cebuano language being the predominant language in a number of Mindanao provinces.

President Elpidio Quirino’s proclamation No. 376

More Cebuanos moved to Mindanao during President Elpidio Quirino’s proclamation No. 376, or Philippine resettlement program, on March 10, 1953.

They brought along the Cebuano language, which was adapted by other Filipino ethnicities like the Ilokanos, Tagalog, and others. This is the reason why today 90% of Mindanao people speak the Cebuano language. Cebuano language became the majority language in Zambonga Del Sur, Zambonga Del Norte, Zambonga Sibugay, Lanao Del Norte, Lanao Del Sur, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Davao Del Norte, Davao Del Sur, Davao De Oro, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Dinagat Islands, Surigao Del Norte, Bukidnon.

Other Bisaya people who came to Mindanao were the Ilonggos and Kinaray-aand Kinaray-a from Iloilo in Panay; they settled around Cotabato and brought with them the Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a languages. Other Bisaya languages spoken in Mindanao are Surigaonon and Butuanon.

THE BISAYA PEOPLEOF BORNEO

Besides the BISAYA PEOPLE OF VISAYAS (BISAYA ISLANDS) in Panay, Romblon, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, Guimaras, Masbate, Leyte, and Samar who speak different Bisaya languages such as Hiligaynon, Cebuano, Waray, Aklanon, Capiznon, Kinaray-a, Bantoanon, Romblomanon, Cuyonon, Asi, Baybayano, Kinabalian, Bantayanon, Porohanon, Cuyunon, Caluyanon, and other Bisaya languages.

On the island of Borneo, the Bisaya are another indigenous group that originates from the northwest coast of East Malaysia. They are mostly found in the Limbang District of Sarawak, Kuala Penyu, Menumbok, Sipitang, Labuan Federal Territory, and the area surrounding Beaufort. The Dusun Tatana tribe and the Bisaya tribe are quite close, particularly in terms of language. If they converse with one another, it is clear that some of their dialogical language exchanges are nearly identical. Currently, the majority of Bisaya in Sarawak are Christians while the majority of Bisaya in Sabah are Muslims. Although they should not be mistaken with the Dusun people of Sabah, they go by the names Dusun, Jati Dusun, and Bisaya in Brunei. The Bisaya people are also recognized as Dayak kin, despite the fact that they are native to Borneo and were not imported there.

The Bisaya, Dusun, Kadazan, and Rungus ethnic groups and other peoples in the Malaysian province of Sabah on Borneo speak a set of languages collectively known as dusunic languages. In Sabah, the majority of the Dusun and Kadazan are Roman Catholic Christians. There are also small numbers of Muslims and adherents to other traditional religions.
