[FEATURES] WITH the celebration of National Press Freedom Day, student publications continue to face oppression, censorship, budget cuts, intimidation, and harassment and face an asymmetrical war to preserve campus press freedom. HAPPENING NOW: The Tertiary Schools are now preparing for the opening of Integration 2024.
OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON HB 1155
As a member of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP), The Bedan Herald stands in support of the immediate passage and establishment into law of House Bill 1155, commonly known as the Campus Press Freedom Bill. The proposed legislation provides critical and long-needed protection for all student media organizations at this crucial moment.
The existing Campus Journalism Act of 1991, while revolutionary in its time when it was passed into law on the campus newspaper-run year following the 1987 Philippine Constitution, sectioned itself as a powerless washout to the challenges that characterize contemporary campus journalism. Over the last three decades, the media environment has undergone seismic changes, and so have challenges and threats to press freedom.
HB 1155 is a significant step toward student journalist empowerment and protection of the integrity of campus publications. This Bill aims to protect the campus press from financial constraints, including strong protection from administrative interference that guarantees an independent, fearless campus press. It is a necessary move that would ensure student journalists can continue to be the voice of the youth.
The Bedan Herald urges its student journalists to keep the public informed, hold power accountable, and serve an essential role in upholding journalism principles. We urge all lawmakers to heed the call—and expeditiously enact the Bill. The future of freedom, and thus democracy, rests on the shoulders of what is, after all, campus journalism.
Noblesse Oblige!
