Valentine's Day?

We all know the legend of the priest who was thrown into prison and was later beheaded due to stubbornly violating the edict of Roman Emperor Claudius of forbidding new marriages by secretly marrying couples back in 270 AD.

But before the legend of Saint Valentine, this celebration was actually celebrated annually on February 15. It is a Christian cooptation of the pagan feast of Lupercalia that honored Juno Februata, the Roman Goddess of high spirited s*x. It is one of several Roman holidays that were actually s*x or**es. All single young men in Rome drew a lady's name from a jar and pinned it on their sleeves for the duration of celebration. Hence the expression "wearing your heart on your sleeve." Men and women were thus partnered for feasting and s*x play for several days. At the end of the holiday, all of the women expected at least a piece of jewelry, and any lady who became pregnant expected to marry her mate.

By 496, the Christian conquerors had demonized all of the biologically normal pagan practices. About that time, Pope Gelasius altered the Lupercalia lottery by replacing the names of local women with the names of the saints. Each person was to draw the name of a saint and try to emulate him or her during the next year. This was supposed to be an improvement on what had gone before.

To this day, the importance of Valentines Day cannot be overstated. Those people who survive December with a few unspent money now have an opportunity to correct that defect while fulfilling the wishes of a lover who expects a heart-shaped box of chocolates, Hallmark romantic cards, exotic perfume, s*xy underwear and pricey overnight or short time hotel (or whatever you call it) experience. As for the importance to our economy, this day brings substantial sales of flowers, greeting cards, jewelry, restaurants, condoms and hotel bookings.
