Life sentence for killer of
Pagadian City radio broadcaster

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – A local court on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment the killer of a radio broadcaster who was ambushed in May 2018 here.

Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 18 Judge Felix Rodriguez Jr. found Arnaiz Alam Cabaro alias “Cabib” guilty beyond reasonable doubt for killing Carlos Matas, a radio block timer.

The court sentenced Cabaro in absentia as he escaped on April 26, 2019 from police custody while being taken to a hospital due to chest pain.

Rodriguez also ordered Cabaro to pay the Matas' heirs PPH75,000 for civil indemnity, PHP75,000 moral damages, PHP75,000 as exemplary damages, PHP130,540 as actual damages with 6-percent interest per year on the aggregate amount of the monetary awards computed from the time of finality of the court decision until full payment.

Matas was killed in an ambush in Barangay Naburan, Labangan in May 2018.

The ambush took place a week after Matas, his driver, and a security es**rt survived a similar attempt in Labangan.

Aside from hosting a paid program, Matas was also the coordinator for a group of cassava farmers working with then-Zamboanga del Sur governor Antonio Cerilles.

Col. Roel Lamiing, provincial police director, said he will check if there is an existing warrant of arrest against Cabaro and have it served against the latter.

Marilou, the victim's wife, said their family is praying for justice calling those who knew of Cabaro's whereabouts to work with the authorities for his arrest. (PNA)

BAHAGI sa bicameral conference para sa pagpasa ng 2023 national budget sina 𝖠𝖪𝖮 𝖡𝗂𝖼𝗈𝗅 Representatives Rizaldy Co at Congressman Jil Bongalon, ito'y matapos pormal na e-anunsyo ni House Speaker Martin Romualdez ang mga miyembro ng House of Representatives na dadalo sa nasabing usapin.

Ang nasabing mga piniling miyembro ng mambabatas kabilang si Cong. Bongalon ng Ako Bicol partylist na nasa unang termino pa lamang ay pinangunahan ni Congressman Co bilang chairperson ng House Committee on Appropriations.

Dahil sa pinamalas umanong galing, at husay sa pagdedebate at pagdepensa sa mga proposed budget ng mga ahensya ng pamahalaan noong nakaraang plenary deliberations, ay isa si Bongalon sa mga napili at kakatawan sa House of Representatives para sa gaganaping Bicameral Conference.

Siniguro naman ni Bongalon na makakaasa ang bawat Pilipino dahil sa kanyang adhikaing makapagsumite ng makabuluhan at naaayong Pambansang Budget para sa muling pagbangon at pag-uunlad ng ating bansa.

THAI POLICE: MORE THAN 30 KILLED IN CHILDCARE CENTER ATTACK

A gunman who attacked a child care center in Thailand and then fired from his car as he fled killed more than 30 people Thursday, including two dozen children, authorities said.

It was the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history. The assailant, identified as a former police officer, killed his wife and child before taking his own life.

Photos and videos posted online of the day care showed the floor of one room was smeared with blood and sleeping mats scattered about. Pictures of the alphabet and other colorful decorations adorned the walls.

In videos, frantic family members could be heard weeping outside the building. Ambulances stood by as police and medical workers walked around.

Twenty-two children and two adults were killed in the building before the assailant fled, according to a police statement. But he continued to shoot people from his car, police Maj. Gen. Paisal Luesomboon told The Associated Press.

Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old former police officer Panya Kamrap. Paisel told PPTV in an interview that he was fired from the force earlier this year because of drug-related offenses.

In the attack he used multiple weapons, including a handgun, a shotgun and a knife, Paisel said.
