THE PUZZLE piece as a symbol for autism was originally used by the National Autism Society in UK in 1963. Time went by and it was used to represent autism by an organisation in America, Autism Speaks.

But the problem for many autistic people, is that Autism Speaks campaigns were particularly negative and problematic to autistic people.

Autism awareness campaigns historically have been modelled on campaigns to raise awareness of diseases, illnesses like cancer. Early autism awareness promotion was based on organisations and parents’ belief that autism is a disease. A tragic and terrible one.

Autism Speaks was the biggest organisation to approach autism awareness from this perspective that autism is a disease requiring fixing, curing. Therefore, their campaigns were the most hurtful, upsetting and offensive to autistic people.

Words and symbols might not seem to mean much, but they represent a perspective which increases discrimination against us in society. It’s time to shift to autism awareness, as well as throwing away symbols from an era gone by that was not kind to autistic people.

- Paula Jessop is an autistic woman who advocates for β€˜radical acceptance’ of autism as a valid type of neurological difference and supporting autistic people through strengths-based methods.

Many adults and children on the autism spectrum have reported that they stim to help adapt to their environments. Some people report that they stim to counteract an overwhelming sensory input or as a way to reduce internal anxiety. Others may feel the need for more sensory stimulation. For some, stimming may be a way to self-regulate behavior, to "keep it together," so to speak. Sometimes the stimming behaviors may be calming; other times, they may be a way to maintain focus and attention. Because stimming is repetitive, it can easily become a habit for many individuals on the spectrum and may simply become pleasurable in and of itself, outside of any self-regulatory benefits. Indeed, self-stimulatory behavior may serve multiple functions across settings.

If a self-stimulatory behavior prevents an individual from engaging in more meaningful activities or has the potential to cause physical harm, it should be stopped. Punishment should not be used to stop self-stimming behavior. More effective strategies involve gradually decreasing the stim behavior by teaching socially appropriate replacement behavior, using the stim behavior as a natural motivational reward, and teaching self-management skills.

He was diagnosed with GDD (Global Developmental Delay) and suspected ASD (autism) at 2yo. Then, he started attending Occupational Therapy immediately. But we still felt mixed emotions about it.

Based sa video na 'to, maraming signs si LO namin before. At ngayon medyo nabawasan na ung challenges kasi maaga sya napa therapy. Very common na nababasa ko sa Autism Community na in denial ang parents kaya hindi pa napa assess or therapy ang bata. I understand. Ganun talaga mahirap tanggapin.

Hug from an AUsome parent to another. πŸ’—πŸŒˆ

Dear parents with young kids,

Please stop comparing your child with other children, most especially kung ikukumpara mo ang anak mong Neurotypical sa anak ng kapitbahay/kakilala mong Neurodivergent or Special Child.

Kaya sobrang saya na namin kapag nag try sila kumain ng new food or ganado sila kumain.

The list goes on....

In short, BE KIND. πŸ’šπŸŒˆ

Many autistic people have intense and highly-focused interests, often from a fairly young age. These can change over time or be lifelong. It can be art, music, gardening, animals, postcodes or numbers. For many younger children it's Thomas the Tank Engine, dinosaurs or particular cartoon characters.

Autistic people might also become attached to objects (or parts of objects), such as toys, figurines or model cars – or more unusual objects like milk bottle tops, stones or shoes. An interest in collecting is also quite common.

Autistic people often report that the pursuit of such interests is fundamental to their wellbeing and happiness, and many channel their interest into studying, paid work, volunteering, or other meaningful occupations. The interest can:

β€’ provide structure, order and predictability, and help people manage the uncertainties of daily life

β€’ give someone a way to start conversations and feel more self-assured in social situations

β€’ help someone to relax and feel happy.

I have two kids. One is autistic. The other is not autistic.
Both of them are NORMAL and I'm proud of them. πŸ’—

Please stop saying that Autistic people aren't normal. It's offensive and unfair for autistic and their parents/guardians.
The right term to be used is "Neurodivergent" which means their brain is wired differently.
But just like any other person, they also have emotions. They deserve love and respect too. 🌈

Autistic people have been dealing with a lot of invisible battles. They are stronger than you thought. 🌈
