Hiyas HIYAS is OMF Lit’s imprint for children’s books. The word “hiyas” means “gem” in Filipino. What is HIYAS? HIYAS is OMF Literature’s imprint for children’s books.

The word “hiyas” means “gem” in Filipino, an appropriate name for a line of books that contain treasures for children. In HIYAS books, readers will discover a wealth of enjoyable stories, memorable characters, imaginative art, and indispensable biblical values. In 2005 the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino recognized HIYAS for its contribution to advancing Filipino children’s literature. HIYAS was cited

for its promotion of the Filipino language through stories that have a clear and positive message and encourages godly values. Why choose HIYAS? HIYAS stories are written especially for kids: some endearing, some action-packed, some informative. Creative illustrations combine with fascinating stories to trigger a kid’s imagination. But at the heart of every HIYAS book is a Christian value essential to a child’s character development. Illustrated in stories, these essential lessons are easier to understand and apply. This is why each HIYAS book is more than just a tale—it’s a tool for the parent or teacher striving to build a foundation of godly character and prepare children for life. What is HIYAS looking for? HIYAS is looking for original and interesting manuscripts, fiction or non-fiction, written in the Philippine context for Filipino or Asian children. Writers for HIYAS should be members-in-good-standing of Bible-believing churches. HIYAS stories teach Christian values, obedience to God’s Word, or love for God and other people. Stories may also help kids to learn good habits, appreciate God’s creation, or draw them to trust in the Lord.

Since we're talking a lot about emotions, specifically children's emotions, on social media these days because of the Pixar movie, why not check out our book Alin? Alin? Ang Daming Damdamin, with story by Jacqui Franquelli and illustrations by Juno Abreu

Sadness and joy. Anger, fear, and many more. It’s important for children to recognize and understand the different emotions they can experience every day. Join our little hero as he faces life and feelings of various shades and colors.

Alin? Alin? Ang Daming Damdamin! is a picture book written in Filipino and translated into English. The story shows a week in the life of a young child who experiences different emotions, including joy at seeing his mom pick him up from school, sadness over the death of his cat, fear of performing on stage, etc

“It’s about time for a book that helps children identify and traverse through their emotions. This book also helps parents and adults understand what children go through as they feel different feelings. I love how it is written in rhymed verse, which makes the text memorable for readers.”
Dr. Joyce Piap Go

This book is available at OMF Lit Bookshops, shop.omflit.com, Shopee, and Lazada for P150.

Young children can get easily overwhelmed, especially when they are tired, hungry, sleepy, or troubled. Negative emotions or experiences can be distressing for children who do not fully understand what is going on. We need to provide them with a safe, loving, and stable environment. We can also help children cope with difficult feelings and experiences by teaching them some healthy and simple coping strategies at an early age.

These include:
1. Engaging in play
2. Singing and listening to relaxing music
3. Allowing them to cry
4. Dancing or doing simple exercises
5. Doing creative activities such as drawing, coloring, and so on
6. Taking a nap
7. Talking to a person they trust, such as a parent or caregiver
8. Praying to God

Another tip that might help children deal with sadness is reading a nice book. The Sad Cat is one such book that you can use to help kids deal with sadness.

Mabuhay, fellow Pinoy delegates! Maraming salamat, National Book Development Board - Philippines, for the opportunity 😊

Glory and praise to You, Jesus, as always 💕
