You’ve seen Cave-trolls and Hill-trolls and Stone-trolls. Now, meet some Snow-trolls.

For director Kenji Kamiyama’s anime film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, our artists envisioned a new breed of big, ogre-like creatures with shaggy hair, an unruly beard and curling horns, which Kamiyama’s team of artists then imagined in an animated style. The final result was the hairiest, but earlier concepts also explored these hulking humanoids with less hair and more hide, sharp chompers and various kinds of clubs to destroy things in one fell sweep.

Swords! We love ‘em, and in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, there are plenty. On these weapons, you’ll spy the animal heraldry of some of the lords of Rohan, such as the boar, the falcon, and the ram, and important cultural iconography including the sun.

“We employed iconic heraldry to help distinguish each of the cultures of Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings movies,” says additional concepts designer Daniel Falconer of the original trilogy. “For the Rohirrim, sun and horse motifs dominated, but in The War of the Rohirrim we’re introduced to lords and soldiers from different parts of Rohan that have their own unique sigils inspired by other animals including birds of prey, swine and deer.”

All of these intricate details would go on to inform director Kenji Kamiyama’s team of artists as they richly animated J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

From Wētā Workshop - In 2021, director Kenji Kamiyama tasked Wētā Workshop with joining him on a new adventure but also a familiar, special one — to help bring to life J.R.R. Tolkien’s world for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

Set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the anime film tells the story of the House of Helm Hammerhand and their battle to defend the Hornburg fortress, later known as Helm’s Deep. It’s a fantasy tale in a different time and a different medium, but our artists were guided by the same world-building ethos as they were when they first thought about what Middle-earth might look like on screen two decades ago.

For these lands only imagined, our design studio dug deep into the legendarium to create beautiful key scene illustrations and original concept drawings of armour, environments, creatures and weapons — as if for a live-action film — which Kamiyama’s team of artists then translated into an animated style. Cue the war horns.
