At 79 years old, he should be resting, enjoying his remaining years in peace. But here he is—standing alone, facing the consequences of choices he made not for himself, but for the country he loved.

Say what you will about him, but I have never felt a leader who loved the Philippines as deeply as he did. The kind of love that makes you fall in love with your own country, too. His leadership wasn’t perfect—no one is—but during his time, I felt safer. Crimes were down. Women, children, and the vulnerable had less to fear. Yes, the war on drugs had its price, but it also saved countless lives from the grip of addiction and crime.

Now, those dark days seem to be creeping back. The streets don’t feel as safe. Trust in authorities wavers. The fear is returning.

And this old man—this man who gave his years, his health, and his peace for the nation—is being left to fight alone.

You don’t have to like him. You don’t have to agree with everything he did. But after all his sacrifices, will we really just turn our backs on him now?

I pray for him. I pray for our country. And I pray for the generations to come.
