Theresian Basketball Team faces tough competition against De La Salle Basketball Team, 106-72
The match between STCJA and DLSAU took place at the De La Salle Araneta University PE Gymnasium on Saturday, February 3, the gym bustling with anticipation as senior high school students were spotted at the event, actively cheering for our players.
The game commenced with a jump ball between STCJAβs player #11, Arcinue, and DLSAUβs #15, Buban; the latter taking hold of the ball, officially starting the match.
During the first quarter, the Theresian team adapted a man-to-man defense, whereas the DLSAU players focused on double or even triple-teaming STCJA athletes holding the ball. The first quarter ended with scores 35-14 in favor of DLSAU, putting STCJA at a disadvantage of a 21-point deficit.
Despite the gap however, in the duration of second to third quarter, STCJA strived to keep up with the pace of DLSAU players, scoring 40 points compared to their 42 points. The majority of the shots consisted of putbacks from both teams but with notably more three-pointers from DLSAU shooters.
STCJAβs Vice-Captain Lawrence Baldismo, #25, had a prominent presence on the court, along with Christian Navaroza, #8, and John Samonte, #31, scoring the most points for the team. However, with multiple fouls from both STCJA and DLSAU, things get rocky especially once Baldismo gets injured, weakening the teamβs offensive play.
Apart from the loss of the stellar player Baldismo, the opposing team showcased a formidable force from their players having a confounding drive and skill for shooting, specifically from player Buban, Jersey #15, with Rangel, #11 and Cruz, #14, following soon after. As all DLSAU players seemed to be well-rounded, equipped with incredible speed and unwavering stamina, this sentiment was just made even more evident during substitutions.
During the fourth and final quarter of the game, fast break plays by the opposing team's players, again with Buban securing the win for DLSAU, concluded the game, resulting in scores 35-14, 54-32, 77-54, and the final score of 106-72 with a 34-point gap.
Post-game, after the STCJA team and DLSAU team exchanged congratulations, a coach from the opposing team later on approached a Theresian player stating that though they were indeed strong, what the team lacked was not strength, but stamina and endurance. The same sentiment was brought up again by Coach James Serrano, along with other critiques directed at their play, as they reflected on the game during the ride home.
The next upcoming match with PROBEX will be held tomorrow, February 7, at 1:00 pm. This holds a promise while lighting a fire for the STCJA basketball team, as they seek to redeem themselves and finally get a taste of sweet victory, fueled by newfound determination to work harder, and improve during the short break.
