This National Indigenous Peoples’ Month, we honor the deep history and rich heritage of the indigenous communities across the Philippines. Long before the arrival of the Spaniards in 1521, these resilient communities, such as the Moro, Lumad, Kalinga, Tagalog, Ilocano, Igorot, Bikolano, Aeta, and Agta, thrived on the lands we now call home. From hunter-gatherers and agriculturalists to the fishermen and rice farmers of today, their connection to the land has been a cornerstone of their identity.

For centuries, these indigenous peoples have fought tirelessly for their rights, autonomy, and ancestral domains. From defying forced assimilation and conversion under colonial rule to participating in the Philippine revolution, their legacy is one of resistance and courage. Yet, despite these efforts, they have often been marginalized and excluded from the national identity, even after independence.

Today, we are witnessing a powerful resurgence of movements that seek to reclaim indigenous birthrights, autonomy, and cultural pride. As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Month, let us reflect on their struggles, recognize their contributions, and amplify their voices in shaping the future of our nation.
