๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š || As the Journalism Skills Training moved into its afternoon session, Ms. Rosita Morales, the former Editor-in-Chief of the Pillar (2018 - 2019), led the discussion that centers on campus paper management and editorial writing.

The session offered an in-depth definition of a student publication, foregrounding its structure and its operation within the university. The speaker proceeds to expand that publications deliver service not to the administration but rather to the student body, ultimately, the Filipino people.

She continued by discussing the process and styles in writing editorial pieces and reminded the students journalists regarding who they are writing for.

Ms. Morales also entertained questions regarding the said topic and left the participants with knowledge that can aid in the success of their respective publications. ยถ

They called for an urgent response from the UEP administration regarding the lack of support for student publications.

Docil reaffirmed the call to cease the attacks against student journalists as censorship remains pervasive in the university. This is attested through intimidations, negative reactions and the insistence of post removal. However, The Pillar firmly stands in its commitment to serve the students.

Meanwhile, Acebuche stood firm in his message and as he highlighted the struggles within their publication and urged the administration for better support to improve the daily operations of their publication.

31/08/2024

As the new academic year begins, UEPians continue to face the same persistent issues within the universityโ€”slow admission processes, convoluted enrollment procedures, inadequate school facilities, and a declining quality of education. In such circumstances, it is crucial for UEPians to have their experiences amplified and to become more informed about the underlying issues plaguing the institution.

This is why the new Editorial Board and Staff of The Pillar will remain committed to fighting for the rights of every student in the university.

The Pillar shall exercise its full autonomy despite the absence of the technical adviser. It will never hamper the operations of the publication. It will never be threatened and will continue to expose institutional failures and hold those in power accountable.

The Pillar will continue to share narratives of students forever upholding its tenetsโ€”Critical, Fearless, and Unapologetic. ยถ

The absence of genuine freedom of the press is equivalent to jeopardizing our fundamental rights as human beings. Hence, a free press should mean a freer country that manifests a liberating and progressive society.

As we celebrate National Press Freedom Day, The Pillar, the official student publication of the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP), expresses its solidarity with the journalists and student-journalists in the country, especially in the fight against the intensifying attacks and utter repression of the press.

August 30, 2024, not only serves as a constant reminder to the government and the administration for their commitment to press freedom but also to appreciate the contributions of our societyโ€™s truthtellers in their service to the masses.

However, despite this annual celebration, different attacks in the form of intimidation, censorship, and repression are still rampant today, from the national publications down to the campus publications. Despite this, the administration covers their disregard for press freedom in a faรงade of their false promises.

Even the campus publications were subjected to control, creating an inauthentic autonomy, and are done through different means: partial to full censorship, controlling the funds, and repressive constitutions and by-laws.

One recent issue in UEP was in the form of censorship, where The Pillar was being forced to take down a published article. It was done through an injunction where the targeted post was a significant report for the last University Student Council (USC) elections. No post was taken down, and the publication stood firm and true to their report with the help of a unity statement from the College Editorโ€™s Guild of the Philippines (CEGP).

Another issue that greatly hinders the student publications is the administrationโ€™s control and repression of their funds. After Republic Act No. 10931, or โ€œUniversal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act,โ€ was passed, the publicationsโ€™ funding was subjected to the bureaucratic process that consumed a lot of time and resources.

In the case of The Pillar, the Board of Reagents (BOR) determines the appropriate amount of funding, not the university or student subscriptions. This results in the absence of funding for press work and coverage, as well as the lack of equipment and materials to hinder the operations of the publication.

Abuse of power was also utilized to control publications like An Lantawan, the official student publication of Leyte Normal University (LNU), where the publication was forced to undergo an accreditation process to suppress the publication. However, this was addressed with the help of a unified stand with other publications along with the CEGP that brought the issue to the forefront.

Another form of control was inside the constitution and by-laws of the publication, Fulcrum, the official student publication of Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT), where a provision hinders them from publishing articles without an adviser. In this is a similar situation in UEP, where The Pillar will not be able to conduct events and training as well as request funding and a stipend grant due to the recent resignation of their technical adviser.

This is different, however, in terms of publishing articles, where they can still publish articles in the absence of a technical adviser. This shows that the autonomy of the student publications is partial in some casesโ€”false, and that difference between the journalists and the administration only sets them further apart.

Journalism is a hard field to pursue, especially in the Philippines, where the administration has a bloody history of violence and control over the press. Regardless, journalists and student journalists alike are dedicated to continuously working in the grassroots as a form of resistance. It is the final stand of true democracy and exercise of freedom.

The Pillar condemns all the attacks to the freedom of the press, the journalists, and their supporters. In the very least, the administration should be the one to protect, not nullify its power.

The Pillar also stands for genuine truth and justice, for the role of the journalists and the publications is assumed from the moment they start to writeโ€”for it is the moment they chose to serve.

As long as The Pillar stands, it will continue to serve the student body, forever embodying its tenets in achieving its goal: Critical, Fearless, and Unapologetic. ยถ

The 2024 qualifiers, along with the incumbent members of The Pillar, gathered together for the Qualifier's Orientation, at the Graduate Studies Building, today, August 29, 2024.

Members of the Editorial Board oriented the qualifiers with the publication's editorial policies and by-laws, obligations and challenges student journalists may face, and ways how one can be an efficient campus journalist.

One of the hallmarks of the orientation is the much-anticipated output assessment by the respective section heads on the outputs crafted by the qualifiers during their qualifying exam. Through this, qualifiers gained insights on how their outputs had been evaluated and checked throughout the qualifying process.

The insightful day concluded with a closing address from The Pillarโ€™s current Editor-in-Chief, Trisha Mae Docil, emphasizing the upcoming 3rd Pagsubay: Journalism Skills Training, which will take place on September 2-4, 2024. ยถ

ยถ

"Tara Bebet, may kurso ka na?" my mother asked, weariness etched on her face from the day's work of selling banana cue and palamig at the nearby elementary school.

โ€œNay, ayaw kabaraka. Ma-update nala kuno sira,โ€ I replied, trying to sound reassuring.

I didn't make it. Despite how much I love my mother, I had to lie. The last thing that my mother needed was disappointing news from her favored child.

My name was not on the qualified list for my dream program. I felt like a failure.

The world seemed to stop turning. Panic started to creep until the moment came that I burst into tears, blaming myself for not having done enough.

My friends and I went back to the college to ask for reconsideration. However, the list was already finalized, there were no more slots, and our applications had been moved to the next priority course we had listed.

โ€œDire pa ngani natikang an klase, sa pamasahe pala, ubos na an kwarta,โ€ my friend said heavily in exhaustion after walking around the university.

I could not agree more. This was our dreamโ€”our driving fuel. Yes, we would be given an opportunity for education. But our hearts would always yearn for our truest ambitions.

While walking around the academic lane, I noticed a familiar face in the crowd of students. A face that had matured, yet its features still reminded me of who she was.

โ€œJanna! โ€I shouted, my face lighting up with a caring expression, thrilled to see my childhood friend again.

I excitedly conversed with her, eager to catch up on how her life had progressed over the years. Seeing her brought back a rush of memories as we reminisced and exchanged stories about our current lives.

โ€œKahapon la ngani kami nag-asikaso san amon requirements, haha,โ€ she shared. I was taken aback, standing in awe of what she said. Those exact words were what I wished I could have told my mother without lying. Yet, my brows furrowed in confusion as I asked her how she managed to get in since the college had already done shortlisting the qualified applicants.

โ€œAram mo na, kay dide na-trabaho si Papa. Kaya nga kami naglipat sadto, para harani kami sa iya trabaho,โ€ she said. Yet, I was still unsure of what she meant. Coming from a town miles away from the university, some things were unfamiliar to meโ€”like the schemes behind such matters.

I gave a slight laugh, uncertain of how to respond. I then looked her directly in the eyes, as if questioning every inch of her soul, and asked for clarification.

โ€œConnectionsss beshh,โ€ she said with her eyes rolling in sarcasm, drawing out the 's' sound provocatively.

Connections? That single word pierced my soul. In a university fully funded by the national government to guarantee every Filipino student free access to tertiary education, connections matter most.

I went home that day feeling defeated just by that single word. I felt cheated. The endless going back and forth, complying with the requirements, and enduring the rigorous qualifying processesโ€”only to not make it. Then, someone else bypassed all that simply due to connectionsโ€”a luxury people like me might never have. Reality is indeed harsh, especially for the less fortunate.

Two days passed since that conversation, but it still lingered in my mind. While my mother braved the heat for our familyโ€™s betterment and as I tried my best to fit into the systemโ€™s standards, it was all for nothing. It was a battle we had lost before it even beganโ€”injured, stepped on, and trampled.

A week passed, and my friends and I received a text message that we had qualified for a different program. Honestly, we weren't even sure anymore how to categorize this newsโ€”was it good or somewhere in between?

โ€œHello, Ms. Cabahug. We would like to inform you that you have qualified...โ€ the text message read. I would move mountains and cross seas to hear if only they meant I had qualified for my dream program. But bitterly, they did not.

After all, being able to pursue my studiesโ€”thanks to Nanayโ€™s labor of love and the countless trays of banana cues and palamig she soldโ€”meant more to me than regretting each night that I was led away from my dream program because of a bitter truth I wish never existed in the first place. ยถ

Ayon pa kay Clarice Palce, ang Secretary General ng Gabriela, "A woman's right to say 'no' is fundamental and absolute, regardless of marital status."

ยถ

Today, we honor a man whose legacy goes beyond his tragic death on an airport tarmacโ€”a journalist, senator, father, and most importantly, a hero who gave his life fighting for national democracy: Ninoy Aquino Jr.

Recently, however, President Ferdinand โ€œBongbongโ€ Marcos Jr. moved Ninoy Aquino Day from August 21 to August 23, prompting backlash from pro-Ninoy supporters like Rep. Edcel Lagman. Lagman called the change illegal, citing a six-month notice requirement for rescheduling holidays. The move, intended to boost tourism with a long weekend, was criticized by Lagman, who argued, โ€œNo holiday economics or domestic tourism boost can hold a candle to Ninoyโ€™s heroism.โ€

Ninoy Aquinoโ€™s assassination on August 21, 1983, ignited a nationwide movement against the Marcos regime, transforming a small opposition into a national crusade. Elected to the Senate at 35, Ninoy boldly opposed President Marcos Sr., condemning human rights abuses and government militarization. Even after his arrest under Martial Law, Ninoy remained defiant, organizing the opposition, setting up an intelligence network, and inspiring protests from prison. In honor of his bravery and contributions, August 21 was declared a non-working holidayโ€”the day he returned to the nation he dearly loved.

Nevertheless, this move will not diminish the significance of this day. With or without a proclamation, let us celebrate the life of Ninoy Aquino Jr., whose selfless courage inspired a nation to fight for freedom. After all, in the words of Ninoy before the Asia Society in New York, โ€œThe Filipino is worth dying for.โ€ ยถ

UEPians, A long weekend is coming your way!

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, by authority of the President, signed Proclamation No. 665, Series 2024, moving the commemoration of Ninoy Aquino Day from August 21, Wednesday, to August 23, Friday.

Likewise, August 26 has been declared a regular holiday in observance of National Heroesโ€™ Day under Proclamation No. 368, Series 2024. This is to pay homage to the historic anniversary of the Cry of Pugad Lawin, which elicited the inception of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonization.

Thus, whether you plan to hang out with friends in cahoots or spend quality time with your family at home, let this long weekend be a time for academic respite. Together, let us make the most of it before we once again bust our tails on our academic obligations. ยถ

The Pillar congratulates the following set of candidates who successfully completed the new and painstaking qualifying examination process from August 12 to 26, 2024.

Only 37 out of the 80 official applicants successfully passed the screening process, and only 24 applicants were able to exemplify their journalistic prowess in the examination to reach the door to the world of journalism.

As the new academic year begins, these new student-journalists should stand alongside the existing members of the publication in order to serve the university's student body.

As a publication that commits to this significant role, we don't just need your technical skills, unwavering dedication, and burning passion; we also need to see that every single one of you embodies our tenets:
