⚡️ How to Attract and Work with Cooperative Clients as a Social Media Manager ⚡️
One of the best things about being a Social Media Manager is the opportunity to work with clients who truly get it — those who are invested in their own growth and are genuinely willing to collaborate. These partnerships are where the magic happens. But attracting and working with cooperative clients isn’t always easy. Over the years, I’ve learned a few strategies that can make a world of difference. Let me share them with you:
1. Know Who Your Ideal Client Is
Not every client is going to be the right fit, and that’s okay. Take some time to reflect on the types of clients you’ve loved working with in the past. What made them stand out? Was it their industry, their communication style, or maybe their trust in your expertise? When you’re clear on who you want to work with, you’ll naturally start attracting more of those people.
2. Set Expectations Early
This is a big one. Clear expectations are everything. During those initial conversations, talk openly about timelines, goals, deliverables, and even how you’d like to communicate. And don’t be shy about letting clients know what you need from them to deliver your best work — whether it’s feedback, access to assets, or their input. It’s about creating a partnership, not a one-sided transaction.
3. Create a Real Partnership
Clients are more than just customers — they’re partners in the process. Make them feel involved by inviting them to brainstorming sessions or getting their input on campaigns. Tools like Trello, Slack, or Asana can make it easier to keep everyone in the loop and on the same page. When clients feel like they’re part of the journey, they’re more likely to stay engaged.
4. Show Your Value
Let’s be real — clients need to see why they’re investing in you. Share your wins with them, whether it’s case studies, success stories, or analytics that prove you’re making an impact. And don’t just wait for big results — even small wins along the way can show that you’re moving in the right direction.
5. Communicate Like a Pro
Strong communication can make or break a client relationship. Be honest, proactive, and solutions-focused. If something’s not working or if challenges arise, address them head-on. Clients appreciate transparency and trust grows when they know you’re keeping them informed every step of the way.
6. Celebrate the Good Ones
When you’ve got a great client, let them know! Whether it’s a thank-you email, a social media shoutout, or even a little surprise gift, showing appreciation can go a long way. Building strong relationships isn’t just about delivering results — it’s also about making your clients feel valued.
7. Refine Your Onboarding
A smooth onboarding process can set the tone for a positive working relationship. Use this time to educate clients about how you work, gather everything you need from them, and make sure you’re both aligned. A simple welcome packet or checklist can make the process feel seamless and professional.
8. Don’t Be Afraid to Say No
Let’s face it — not every client is going to be the right match. And that’s perfectly fine. If you sense early on that a potential client’s values or work style clash with yours, it’s better to politely decline than to force a partnership that’ll drain your energy. Saying no isn’t easy, but it’s necessary to protect your time and energy.
Building strong client relationships is one of the most fulfilling parts of being an SMM. When you find those cooperative clients who truly trust you and want to collaborate, it’s a win-win. By being intentional about who you work with, setting clear expectations, and communicating openly, you’ll attract clients who not only respect your work but also make the process enjoyable.
