LOOK | The Grade 10 students of Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI) conducted an Earthquake, Flood, and Landslides symposium at Brgy. Old Manunca, Sta. Rita, Samar earlier today, August 31, 2024.

This half-day symposium was held at Old Manunca Elementary School, and the attendees were Grade 5 to Grade 9 students living within the Old Manunca Community.

Presenters during the symposium were Kirstin Gilliane Escoto, Jose Rafael Tiu, Francis Nathan Yu, and Zedrick Peñaranda. They discussed about the different natural calamities and how these calamities can impact Brgy. Old Manunca.

Additionally, Mr. Peñaranda shared about and , making it easy for the students to see potential risks and fault lines that are near within their current location.

Present also during the symposium were the members of the school admin—Ms. Gestia Lynn Amor Paa and Mrs. Myrna Villarmino, the Science 10 teacher Mr. Meg Giles Kirby Tupaz, and the SK Kagawad of Brgy. Old Manunca, Ms. Danica.

The event started at 9:00AM and ended at 11:30AM.

NSPDRRMO: NO TSUNAMI ALERT'

After the waters of Northern Samar were rocked by a series of strong earthquakes this morning, August 19, 2024, the Northern Samar Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (NSPDRMMO) conducted monitoring on the coastline of the province.

From their monitoring, there is no indication of a tsunami after the series of big quakes, of which the epicenters are just a mere 34km north of the municipality of Pambujan, Northern Samar.

EARTHQUAKE ALERT | A series of earthquakes jolts the northern seaboard of Northern Samar earlier around 11:30AM today, August 19, 2024, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) reports.

Here are the recorded magnitudes and time stamps:
M3.0 - 12:01PM
M4.0 - 11:57AM
M6.0 - 11:39AM

Tectonic is the said origin of the earthquake, with an approximate depth of 10kms.

Aftershocks are expected, however, damages to livelihood and other materials are not.

REGIONAL | Ormoc City placed under State of Calamity due to Dengue

TACLOBAN CITY — The 16th Sangguniang Panlungsod of Ormoc City has passed Resolution No. 2024-234, a resolution declaring the City of Ormoc under the State of Calamity due to the dengue outbreak.

This is in line with the special session they conducted yesterday, August 8, approving the resolution to place Ormoc City under the State of Calamity due to the Dengue Outbreak in the area.

Recently, the Local Health Board conducted a meeting regarding the increasing number of dengue reports within Ormoc and immediately recommended placing the city under the State of Calamity.

Based on the data gathered on August 3, the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) noted that the number of cases of dengue in the city has risen to 444, of which 415 have been admitted to the hospitals.

This figure is significantly higher by 255% compared to same time period last year.

To avoid being sick due to dengue, it is mandated that every 4:00PM is Dengue Alert, the time to clean the surroundings.
