PRESS RELEASE
With the increasing number of deaths and the increasing number of COVID cases, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan initiated a drastic and unpopular move to urge people to get vaccinated.
Or the City might return to our former state of MECQ, total lockdown and work stoppage he said.
Mayor Chan explained his drastic move in a press conference with the media last Tuesday, July 27.
Section 4 of Mayor Chan’s Executive Order No. 2021-040, issued last Monday, July 26, earned the flak of netizens in social media.
Section 4 of the order requires the presentation of vaccination cards before one may enter public and private markets, convenience stores and department stores.
After the issuance of his EO, the mayor is happy as all City’s six vaccination sites are full.
The mayor assured his constituents that they need not worry or have a violent reaction on Section 4, as it will not be implemented immediately. They still have 30 days, as its implementation is on August 25.
The mayor said in two weeks, or 14 days from now, they can already see indications if they need to lift Section 4 or the need to extend it.
“We need to do drastic, tinuod unpopular ni siya, pero this is the only answer, kay kung dili nako ni buhaton probably in two weeks maglisod na ta og lihok kay wa na tay kabutangan ang atong mga pasyente,” he told reporters in the press conference.
He said records submitted to him showed that public and private hospitals, isolation facilities are already full of unvaccinated patients and individuals. To top it all, he said three died last July 26, Monday, because of COVID-19.
He said before contact tracers are tracing positive patients to be fetched by Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) personnel for isolation.
But now he said positive patients are the ones calling DRRMO as they can no longer breathe.
“Unsay buhaton sa mayor isip amahan sa nakita nimo nga sitwasyon ? We need to level up, we need to do measures nga mapugngan nato nga di mo spread ang maong virus,” the mayor told reporters.
He said the only solution to this increasing number of cases is vaccination.
“Ang ako, particular kaayo ko sa panginabuhi, pagkaon sa mga tawo, mao nay akong gitan-aw, mao na ang akong prioridad, nga duna silay makaon,” he said as he does not want MECQ, lockdown and work stoppage.
The mayor also called everyone that vaccination centers may now accept walk-in if they are already registered.
“Kay daghan gyud tinuod, nakarehistro na pero wala pa sila matawag. Mao na atong ipasubay karon,” the mayor announced in the press conference.
He apologized to everybody for minor glitches in the system. The mayor already instructed the team to call those who are already registered for their scheduled vaccination.
And in closing the mayor asked, “Ang mga tawo asa sila papilion, kining atong panawagan nga magpabakuna o mobalik ta sa MECQ.” PIO
