Last September 30, a violent magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the City of Bogo, Cebu, and its nearby areas. As of 2:00 p.m. this day, 7,190 more aftershocks were recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. As a result, more than 80,000 families, or over 366,000 people, have been affected and continue to require urgent relief operations.

With this, we are ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ ๐ข๐ง๐  every student to donate at least one (1) ready-to-eat canned good or one (1) noodle pack at the designated dropoff points for the following days until October 9, Thursday. Other essentials such as bottled water, hygiene kits, tents, and blankets are also accepted. University employees, alumni, and community members are also encouraged to participate in the donation.

Your donations will go a long way for our fellow countrymen in Cebu, as they will not only help the earthquake victims physically but also hopefully inspire them to persevere despite the tragedy.

This donation drive is made in partnership with Benguet State University-La Trinidad Campus Supreme Student Government (BSU-LT SSG) and the Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council-Cordillera Administrative Region (RAFC-CAR). If you have more questions, feel free to contact us and the said institutions.

From names spelt with countless vowels, millennial people have dealt with having names with numerous consonants and syllables, which are usually difficult to pronounce, or are seemingly tongue-twisters.

On a general note, nicknames are shortened versions of a personโ€™s name, and they often reflect the aspects of a personโ€™s personality, accomplishments, or failures. Nicknames are sometimes patterned with the craze and fad. For example, naming a child after a favorite singer or celebrity like โ€œMiley Cyrusโ€ or โ€œEnchong Deeโ€.

A drop echoed on the pond; it rippled and stirred the frogs and lily pads.
The clouds then veiled the sun with gloom, while the wind blew harsh as a sailorโ€™s grog.
When the sky had closed its heavy eyes, uncontrollable tears came down.
It started softโ€”just drizzled sighsโ€”then it rippled down.

On my palms, my clothes, and my hair, the salt tears left a ghostly stain.
The breeze then danced with a loamy scent in the air, like an ink stain.
A cloud had formed upon the ground and hugged me looselyโ€”just like a baggy sweater.
A signal sent to humankind to open their umbrellas and run for shelter.

There, still and quiet by the road beneath a spotlight glowing yellow,
A fur ball came through the mistโ€”an unexpected playfellow.

With a biscuit gripped between my lips and an umbrella in hand, I crouched down, slow and low,

And offered peace with open palms, in silent hopes it too would know.

The cat meowed, a sound that slowly blooms and mellows.
A little hesitant, I spoke my blues and yellows.
While my hand reached out to pet its tummy.
It purred and curled, warm and chummy.

With wet socks and shoes, I kept narrating, teary-eyed,

A sob escaped, a puddle formed beneath my feet; my eyes were red and wide.

A minute, an hour passedโ€”it bid its farewell,
A cue to stride back home as evening cast its spell.

In line with the celebration of Benguet State Universityโ€™s 109th Foundation Day, the university hosted the 2025 PRAISE Everlasting Awards, honoring faculty, non-teaching personnel, researchers, extensionists, administrative staff, business employees, and retirees at the BSU gymnasium, September 30, 2025.

Richard H. Kinnud, Chairperson of the PRAISE Committee and Vice President for Administration and Finance, led the ceremony.

Kinnud said the PRAISE awards honor those who have dedicated their service and achievements to the university.

The outstanding performances of the awardees are represented by the acronym EVERLASTING:

E- excellence in job performance
V- vibrancy, vim, and vigor
E- efficiency in the workplace
R- responsiveness
L- leadership in action
A- accountability in responsibility
S- service at its best
T- teamwork in attitude
I- innovative outputs
N- nobility in character
G- greatness in achievement

In response, Valentino L. Macanes, a Salamat-Mabuhay honoree, spoke on behalf of the eight other retirees.

Macanes said he had endless gratitude for the university.
He referred to his stay as bread and butter, but in our culture, rice, vegetables, and watwat.

One thing Macanes signaled to the participants and the remaining BSU staff, and stakeholders is to continue to protect BSUโ€™s land reservation.

"Pabasit nga pabasit ([BSU territory is] getting smaller and smaller), let's not
wait for it to become ten square meters," Macanes implied.

Meanwhile, the PRAISE Loyalty Awards were given in four sets, recognizing years of service from 10, 15, 20, up to 40 years.

This yearโ€™s recognition also introduced a new award, Wellness in Advocacy and Wellness Practice.
Awardees received this for practicing health and wellness activities in their daily lives and working towards healthy living.

Benguet State University successfully conducted its Sustainable Innovation Showcase on September 30, 2025, at the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center grounds, as part of its 109th founding anniversary celebration, highlighting sustainable technology exhibits, product pitching, and an unusual food challenge.

The event also underscored the institution's continuous commitment to a bio-circular green economy.

It featured an extensive gallery walk and technology and product pitching sessions open to the public, allowing moderators and pitchers to present their products to students, community members, and potential investors, and creating an inclusive platform for knowledge exchange.

The event included an unusual food challenge chaired by the College of Agriculture's (CA) Department of Entomology and College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), which boasted insect-based foods and exotic meat, encouraging the audience to push their culinary limits.

CA's booth challenged established dietary norms by serving edible insects like Dubai cockroaches, silkworms, super worms, and black soldier flies.

These insects are mostly found in trees, leaves, and soil, thus representing a clean and sustainable alternative protein source with plant-based eating habits that distinguish them from common pest species.

"They are high in protein even though they're small, and if you compare their protein composition to 100 grams of chicken or pork, it can match their protein composition, so it's really a good alternative protein source," explained Matthew David, an entomology major student manning the booth.

He also provided an important health advisory stating that individuals with seafood allergies should avoid consuming insect-based food, explaining that both are arthropods with shared proteins that trigger allergic reactions.

Meanwhile, the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center (ATBI-AAC) booth featured products from La Trinidad, including kinuday, also known as "kiniing" in Kankanaey, a locally made smoked pork that represents Benguet's rich culinary traditions.

Kinuday is considered a valuable ingredient in the province's local cuisine, especially during gatherings, embodying the ingenuity of highland communities in food preservation.

The booth also showcased sustainable innovations originally made from Mindanao, such as paper canvas, necklaces, and keychains made purely from sugarcane husk, transforming existing agricultural waste into a valuable resource while reducing waste and pollution.

Another practical innovation displayed was sustainable food containers made from dried banana leaves, a functional and eco-friendly alternative to plastic packaging.

In the same vein, the event also featured displays of agricultural technology for sustainable food production and climate-conscious agriculture with the FMA Agri tech Integrated Farm that presented a do-it-yourself hydroponic system that requires only the application of water and nutrients for sustainable vegetable growing.

The system was specifically designed for home-based use, allowing people to have viable access to food production while also addressing food security concerns and minimizing water consumption.

Moreover, the NPRCRTC booth concentrated on potato micro tuberization through plant tissue micropropagation, a process that facilitates the production of plants in sterile conditions using specific plant tissue portions.

NPRCRTC focused on producing small potato tubers for seedling distribution to potato farmers, particularly benefitting Benguet's potato-growing communities.

The booth also promoted sustainable agricultural farm machinery, such as a plant mister machine that provides regulated mist to seedlings, maximizing disease-free propagation.

Lastly, the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) showcased beeswax innovation, displaying a remarkable array of beeswax-based products, including food supplements, ointments, lip balms, and candles.

CRAC also emphasized the natural antimicrobial properties of beeswax, which can be extracted and utilized in therapeutic products such as skin ointments, effective for skin treatments.

โ€œ๐“๐š๐ฒ๐šโ€

โ€œHuwag kang maglaro sa ulanโ€
sambit ni nanay,
sa likod ng ulap
na nagmamasid.

Sisipunin sa lamig ng dekada,
uubuhin sa plemang
nakakasamidโ€”
magkakasakit.

Sa halik ng hangin
akoโ€™y inihip palabas,
at nadatnan ang
kumpol ng mga bata.

Kayaโ€™t sumama, nag-ingay
pero nariyan na rin
ang nagbabadyang panahon
na noon pang pinagbalaan.

At tumagaktak na nga
ang patak, umalingawngaw
ang bagsak, bawat lagpak
ay nagpagulat.

โ€œSumilong ka!โ€
Sisiponin,
uubuhin,
tatahimikin.

Ngunit tumindi lang
ang pagbuhos,
tila patintero, tila habulan
hanggang may โ€˜di nakaiwas.

Inagos ng tubig,
humampas, humampas,
hanggang lamunin ng along
hindi na bumalik.

โ€œHuwag kang maglaro sa ulan,โ€
sambit ni nanay.
Ano nga bang laro,
kung ang ulan ay bala ng langit?
