The Ancient Name of Ifugao

The ancient name of Ifugao was ipugo, which means "earth people," "mortals," or "humans". The term is derived from the words i (from/people) and pugo (hill).
Ifugao is a province in the Philippines that was formerly part of the Mountain Province. The Spanish changed the name from pugo to pugaw, and the Americans eventually changed it to "Ifugao".

Before Spanish colonization, the people of the area now known as Ifugao did not consider themselves to be part of a single ethnolinguistic group. Instead, they identified with their district or village names, such as Alimit, Kiangan, Mayoyao, and Banaue.

The Ifugao people are wet-rice agriculturalists who live in the mountainous region of northern Luzon. They speak an Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) language that is closely related to Bontoc and Kankanaey.

FATWOOD IS THE ENGLISH OF "SALENG"

Back in the day, saleng, a stick of fatwood, was our natural lamp. It was like our flashlight, but smoky and very, very old-school. I remember using it on our trips from our remote village to town to sell kedis. We had to leave super early...like 3 AM...when even the roosters were still snoozing.

The saleng did its job lighting our way, but it had a little side effect: it turned us into walking chimneys.

By the time we reached town, our faces were so black with soot, people couldn’t stop laughing at us. The worst part? Our noses!

They were like soot magnets. Cleaning them felt like mining coal, and no matter how hard we scrubbed, they still looked like they belonged to a cartoon burglar!
