On a tight budget but have the urge to splurge? Here are seven affordable treats that won't hurt your wallet:

𝟭. 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝘂𝘁 - Joy starts just from seeing the "Balut, 15." Fifteen pesos for such an exotic✨ food? I say go for it. Buy two. Hell, buy three. The gentle whack to get a glimpse of the treasure hiding behind the shell is enough to make one's mouth water with hunger. With a splash of sinamak, not even 5-star diners' dishes come close.

𝟮. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 - In every corner of the town, you'd find a savory fried chicken just waiting to be devoured. Whether it be skin, thigh, or even feet, it's all finger lickin' good. Either dipped with toyomansi or chilimansi, a tender, golden brown chicken never disappoints. A chicken a day won't eat your money away.

𝟯. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘆 - Whether eaten on a cold night or a scorching noon, one could never go wrong with batchoy. Is it the noodles or the broth that makes it sooo special? No. It's the boiled egg. Just add 10 pesos and voilà, a special batchoy.

𝟰. 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗮𝗹 - A soft, freshly baked pandesal or cheesedesal from bakeshops is just what you need for everyday life. From the poignant scent when you first walk in the bakery, to taking the first bite, a pandesal for breakfast, maybe lunch or dinner, is a knead (pan, pun intended).

𝟱. 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲 - Steamed/grilled goodness in a cup/stick. Corn in itself is already flavorful, but when you add it *in Anne Curtis' voice* with lots of cheese, it's còrne as God intended— a biblically accurate corn.

𝟲. 𝗜𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 - Need I say more? With the Kabacan heat, all you need is something icy cold (not your nonchalant partner). A tilt of your head, a coffee house! Another tilt, another coffee house! And it's mostly all below 50! Iced coffee is all around us. Something to cool the day and something to post on your myday.

𝟳. 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹 - The GOAT. The OG. Every student's savior and messiah. Tired of the "default" chicken? Try Bicol Express! Try beef! The world is your oyster (although it is not yet an available topping). From all the school expenses a student spends, sometimes food is cut from the budget. Well not in Kabacan, we are flooded with patilans. 20 pesos for 2 pastils thrice a day is hardly a splurge, it's a necessity.

𝗗𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆!

Once every four years, February gets an additional day and becomes 29 days long. This is called Leap Year and there's more to it than what we thought.

We all know that it takes 365 days for Earth to orbit around the Sun, but what we don't know is that it is a rounded number. According to Bob Craddock, it takes Earth 365.242190 days to orbit the Sun, or exactly 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes, and 56 seconds.

There must be a way to account for the extra 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 56 seconds that this "sidereal" year has over the calendar year; hence, the Leap Year. Our calendar years are kept in sync with the sidereal year by adding one extra day every four years.

To celebrate this rare event, do something fun and memorable to add to the list of memories you'll have for the next Leap Year.

A fine, but surely not smooth, long ride has come to the road of warriors. No barriers became a hindrance as they used them to face a more serene quest. Their wish to serve has come before their eyes, as this moment became the beginning of a course of highlights in their life as the vanguards of students' rights.

A new, profound generation proved their consistency in the war of words and skills. With the newly chosen 21 knights in the battle of journalism, the Mindanao Tech will once again shed light on the neighborhood where facts are kept and cannot be seen with naked eyes. Presenting the new faces of the organization who shall continue a greater cycle of truth, freedom, and responsible journalism!

Marking its 20th year of serving for healthcare education, the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (CMAHS) commemorated its founding anniversary through Pagsaulog 2024, yesterday, February 27, at the University Auditorium.

Revolving around this year's theme, "EMO-lympics: Harmonizing Sentiments for Wellness, Unity, and Balance," teams were categorized in inspiration to the emotions highlighted in the Disney movie "Inside Out" namely: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Anxiety.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Dahlia S. Arancel, the CMAHS dean, emphasized the importance of balancing academics and leisure to the students in becoming a successful professional in future.

Moreover, CMAHS Local Student Government (LSG) Adviser Carlo Jason S. Dela Cruz took a trip down the memory lane, to the humble beginnings of the college in 2004 and reflected on how the college has stood the test of time.

CMAHS-LSG Adviser also presented the current faculty members who were also graduates of the college, to serve as inspirations to the students.

"They were once like you sitting on the bench, ngayon, professionals na sila and successful in their respective fields," he noted.

This year's Pagsaulog featured several events including the much anticipated Hiyas ng CMAHS 2024.

Other events included Tawag ng Tanghalan, Tawag ng Tanggalan, Palarong Pinoy, Rainbow Basketball, and Comical Skit.

In an "Inside Out" movie manner, the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (CMAHS) celebrated its 20th Foundation Anniversary yesterday, February 27, 2024 at the University Auditorium.

Six teams of undergraduate students of Nursing, Midwifery, and Pharmacy, alongside their clinical instructors, faced off in a series of non-academic contests.

Additionally, free random blood sugar (RBS) test and blood pressure (BP) measurement were offered to USM faculty; meanwhile, only BP for students.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗱𝗱𝘀

Life is a land divided into battlefields.

On a battlefield, one will find spears and shields wielded by thousands whose faces are painted with the courage and strength they have within. Screams of rage and the clinging of metal devour the atmosphere, and no one can put a stop to this war. On a battlefield, one will find men fighting against men, striking their spears, pushing their way to victory, but only one can have it in their grip.

She was on a battlefield. But her enemies weren't men, but fate. Fate could've betrayed her. Fate could've pushed her off the pedestal. Fate could've wielded its weapon and deprived her of her chance to claim victory. But fate saw her undying courage as she pushed her way through the barricades with intelligence in one hand and bravery in the other, which let her climb and reach the top.

She is Jonah Mae F. Taping, a budding scientist whose love for research brought her to a path filled with both challenges and victory, a path that led to the top of a rocky mountain.

Taking up Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Major in Microbiology at the University of Southern Mindanao, Taping's heart was and still is filled with overflowing love to discover the undiscovered and to realize what's possible. She grew up competing here and there, putting her knowledge to the test, and representing her school. Her journey was going steady until her second year of high school.

Invention. Discoveries. Possibilities.

A door opened for her, and she was brought into the world of discovering, creating, and making real what could be. As she met people whose passion lies in the field of research, she was fascinated by how this endeavor had led us to enjoy the rapidly evolving world that we have now. So, she went and walked on that shaky bridge.

Balancing herself on the bridge she chose to walk on, research was indeed not an easy feat. Challenges threatened to push her off. Financial problems tried to pull her back to her starting point. But many cheered for her, giving her opportunities and providing her with what she needed to continue and make it to the end.

On a cloud nine—that was how she described it. As she read through the list of those who succeeded in their respective battles, her eyes sought the name she dreamed to see in that list—and there it was.

But fate didn't plan on rewarding her with only one trophy. Fate knew she deserved more, so her name was plastered not just on the list of passers but also on the list of topnotchers in the 2024 Certification Examination for Registered Microbiologists, together with another USM alumnus and, not just one, but five other Mindanaons.

"This is truly an honor and this triumph will not be possible without the help of our God Almighty," said she. "I am also grateful to JB's Review Center, co-reviewees and all the staff for everything they’ve contributed to this success… To my family and Ghian, CASChurch, relatives, classmates, and friends, thank you for your unending support and love."

As she took one last step, making it to the other side of the bridge, she looked ahead and found that there was so much more for a budding scientist like herself because research is unending.

"As long as we crave for more possibilities, we will not stop aiming for the better. Kaya sa mga aspiring researchers/scientist out there, you've got to hold your grip, kasi everything will make sense someday and you will also encounter the most unexpected twist sa life stories ninyo."

Research for her was a twist that gave her life its vibrant colors. As she closes this season triumphantly, she looks forward to the opportunities that will come her way and the twists that life has in store for her.

In what could have been the irony of ironies, the Philippines is the top rice importer in 2024, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported.

As per the USDA’s Economic and Research Service report on January 17, the country is estimated to import 3.8 million metric tons (MT) of rice this year. However, in their latest forecast published on February 12, the estimate is increased to 3.9 million MT, further solidifying its position as world’s number 1.

The country is then followed by Indonesia’s 2.9 million MT expected import, China with 2.3 million MT, and Nigeria with 2 million MT.

This projection comes after the Philippines experienced a decline in its self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) in rice, which fell to 77 percent in 2022, the lowest in more than two decades.

Around 500 000 MT of rice is expected to arrive this February, Department of Agriculture announced.

According to DA, this effort aims to boost the local rice supply during the dry spell caused by El Niño, which government agencies warned could impact the country's food availability.

Meanwhile, The Philippine Statistics Authority announced that rice inflation in the country surged to 22.6%, marking the highest level since March 2009 when it reached 22.9%

Sumisimbolo ng progresibong pagbibigay ng kailangan para sa mamamayan at kapwa ang katanyagan ng pagtatagumpay. Sa loob ng dalawang dekadang pagpapakita ng galing at tindig sa iba’t ibang larangang medikal, ipinagdiriwang ng College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences ang kanilang anibersaryong pagkatatag.

Mula sa isang musmos na kolehiyo sa taong 2004, naging matuwid na naitawid ng CMAHS ang kanilang angking tatag sa kanilang pundasyon. Sila ay nagsimula sa pagiging College of Nursing na may isang programa lamang ang nakapaloob dito, at naging College of Health Sciences, na may tatlong programang nakapaloob, ang midwifery, pharmacy at nursing. Sila rin ang kilala bilang tagapaghasa ng magiging mga nars, midwife, pharmacist at doktor sa susunod na henerasyon. Ang CMAHS ay pinangungunahan sa pag-usad ng kanilang dean, Dr. Dahlia Arancel, na may galing sa pangunguna at pagtatamo ng mas malawak na mga kaalaman.

Sa kanilang pagtyatyagang makamtan ang tugatog ng tagumpay kasabay din nito ang pagprodyus ng mga bagong propesyonal sa larangang medikal taun-taon. Tanging hangad na makapag-silbi sa inang bayang kinalakhan na walang inaasahang kapalit tanging bukas palad na pagseserbisyo lamang.

Saludo, para sa mga makabagong bayani ng bayan, isang husay at dangal inyong pinakita sa mamamayan, tunay na kamangha-mangha at kay galing, CMAHS tungo sa mas mataas na pagtatagumpay!

𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣’𝙩 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩.

In true love, we bring out the best in each other’s presence. I always thought that I had experienced love before, but it wasn't until I met this mysterious guy in front of the CVM building. His anti-rad sunglasses reflected the light as he casually strolled down the pathway, exuding confidence. This guy made me realize what it really means to feel everything at once. He wasn't my first boyfriend, but he was the first person who made my heart skip a beat and my stomach fill with butterflies. He opened my eyes to the fact that my past relationships were necessary steps in finding him.

I was not his first girlfriend, but I remember he told me I was the first person who truly made him want to be a better man. My heart swelled with pride, and I could see the consistency in his actions. The way he was more attentive and caring towards me, I knew that our relationship was something special because he knew how to handle me gently.

As I reminisced about the nerves and excitement I felt on our first date, the late afternoon study sessions in the library, and the hours we spent laughing and talking like there was no one around us, it felt like I had just found my best home. With him, I felt a sense of completeness and contentment that I had never experienced before. I knew that our past relationships shaped us, but it was in each other's arms that we found our true selves.

As we walked while holding each other’s hand in front of the CVM building, memories flooded back to the day when I first laid my eyes on this man. I knew that this site had a special place in my heart, a reminder of the love he gave to make me feel this happy. No what-if’s, no maybe’s, and no doubts. We weren't each other's first loves, but we were each other's first true loves, and that is all that matters to me.

In the long reach for success, the line that serves as a distinction between faith and fear is akin to a tightrope suspended high above uncertainty; the path, while offering the promise of safety and reward on the other side, is also a notorious walkway known to greatly punish those who lose their balance. One misstep, two doubts, and three to a million hesitations are what it usually takes for one to come crashing down; hence what makes it a road often not taken.

Roslaine Batao Maulana was not without doubts took her own silent leap during the PAM Certification Examination for Registered Microbiologist last January 20-21 at Taguig, Metro Manila; but she trusted Allah, trusted her prior knowledge, trusted her experiences as a BS Biology graduate from the University of Southern Mindanao, and most importantly—trusted herself.

When she topped the exam as the formidable third, with a whopping score of 84.45%, along with the list of other notable achievers, she recalled how “surreal” it had felt to finally hold the fruits of her labor after taking said exam with utmost secrecy due to a former lack of confidence. Considering her personal struggles and heaps of second-guess in mind, triumph has probably never tasted as sweetas the awaited evening of February 23 came.

“The journey has taught me that the profound battles are often fought in silence, away from the limelight, where perseverance and faith are the only witnesses,” the 23-year-old topnotcher commented in an interview. Roslaine would further extend her gratitude towards a support system that consisted of family and friends, relatives and boardmates, professors, JB’s review center where she also met previous co-reviewees, and most importantly Allah for being her prominent source of wisdom and blessings.

When asked for her feelings regarding being one out of two grads who carried the banner of green and gold, and one out of seven Mindanaoans who dominated the top 10, she shared how happy she was; filled with pride and honor for not only representing the University of Southern Mindanao itself, but also Mindanao as a whole.

“This achievement is a testament to what we, as Mindanaoans, can accomplish, reinforcing the belief that our origins do not define our limitations but rather illuminate our potential to soar beyond expectations.”

The line that serves as a distinction between faith and fear is akin to a tightrope suspended high above uncertainty. But for the newly Registered Microbiologist Roslaine B. Maulana, who tipped the scales in her favor as she walked through the narrow coil with her head held high and eyes singled for glory, there’s not a feat insurmountable if you have trust in both yourself and the process. Being afraid is not a hindrance to being faithful, that’s where true courage lies. Her endearing journey will also set a blazing example for her fellow USMians in their future endeavors and board exams.

Strict wearing of student uniform and ID is being strictly observed today, February 26.

Memorandum no. 016, series of 2024, released by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) on Thursday, February 22, requires students and faculty to wear their complete uniform upon entering the University of Southern Mindanao main campus.

Driver's license and gate pass are also checked and issued for students' private vehicles.

Based on the monitoring data of the Department of Tourism (DOT), South Korea is listed as the country’s main source of international arrivals, with 1,439,336 foreign tourists.

This is 26.41 percent of the 5,450,557 international visitor arrivals that the Philippines welcomed from January 1 to December 31, 2023.

It was followed by the United States with 903,299 tourists (16.57 percent), then Japan with 305,580 (5.61 percent), Australia with 266,551 (4.89 percent), and China with 263,836 (4.84 percent).

The total number was 91.80 percent of the 5,003,475 foreign visitors and 8.20 percent of the 447,082 overseas Filipinos.

Two graduates of University of Southern Mindanao (USM) are topnotchers anew in the 2024 Certification Examination for Registered Microbiologists (RMicro).

USM also secured a 100% passing rate with a total of 16 successful examinees, the Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM) reported yesterday, February 23.

Among the 203 passers, seven topnotchers are from Mindanao including USM's Top 3 Roslaine B. Maulana with a rating of 84.47 and Top 10 Jonah Mae F. Taping scoring 82.50.

This edition marks the fourth consecutive appearance of the University in the topnotchers list, with one topnotcher in December 2018, four in December 2019, and two more in January 2023, bringing the total number of USM RMicro topnotchers to nine.

The 16 new RMicro from USM are as follows: Datujun D. Abu, RMicro; Alyssa Nicole D. Astilla, RMicro; Shiela Mae P. Balase, RMicro; Carmee May L. Balneg, RMicro; Ivan Troy C. Bandico, RMicro; April T. Belo, RMicro; Jamiah Allaine L. Cedeño, RMicro; Serah B. Cedeño, RMicro; Demetrio P. Emejas, Jr, RMicro; Lizel B. Jacquais, RMicro; Allyn Kate F. Luces, RMicro; Jean Salijah A. University of Southern Mindanao-Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines (USM-ICpEP) secured four national qualifiers after finishing second runner-up in the 8th ICpEP.se Region XII Convention on February 15-16 at Notre Dame of Marbel University (NDMU), Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

Rodolfo B. Estimada who won gold in programming Java and the team of Jericho O. Escomes, Maram N. Moustafa, and Keith VN S. Aragon who clinched the championship in Logic breadboarding will represent Region 12 in the National Level on April 18-20, 2024 at Adamson University.

Accumulating 4050 points, USM-ICpEP.se has overtaken seven other higher education institutions from Region 12 after acing the hip-hop dance competition and battle of the bands, leading them to the sociocultural category championship title.

Moreover, USM-ICpEP.se also landed 1st Runner-Up in robothon under the academic category.

"With the help of our trainors/coaches mas na-enhance ang skills namin and hopefully na-inspire ang ibang members namin especially freshmen," Kent Robin Encarnacion, USM-ICpEP.se's president stated.

"Overall as long as we did our best to present USM-ICpEP.se and most importantly is nag enjoy po kaming lahat sa convention," he concluded.

This year’s regional convention is anchored on the theme “Emerging Digital Transformation for Smart and Sustainable Communities in Region 12.”

True to its consistent winning form, the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers-USM Student Chapter (PICE-USM SC) took home the first runner-up award during the 2024 PICE Regional Student Summit (PRSS) on February 15-17 at Notre Dame of Kidapawan College (NDKC), Kidapawan City.

From the second runner-up end for the last year's summit, PICE-USM SC ascended one step higher after registering a total of 4590 points.

This year, PICE-USM SC took home 5 championships coming from Bench Yelling Competition, Men’s Scrabble, Amazing Race, Battle of the Bands, and Call of Duty Mobile (CODM).

USM also hauled 2 silvers from Building Design Competition and Rube Goldberg; 5 bronzes from Bridge Making Competition, Basketball, Women’s Volleyball, Frisbee, and Poster Making; and third runners-up on PICEsikat (battle of talents), and Women’s Chess.

Meanwhile, Janicah Antipuesto Cañete bagged Ms. PICE Ambassadress first runner-up and was able to clinch the Ms. Telegenic award.

Themed “Building Tomorrow, Connecting Today: Synergizing Ingenuity and Civil Engineering Excellence,” this year’s edition of PRSS saw 10 participating schools namely: NDMU, USM, MSU-GSC, Cotabato State University (CSU), Central Mindanao Colleges (CMC), Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU), Notre Dame of Kidapawan College (NDKC), Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges (RMMC), Notre Dame University (NDU), and Academia De Tecnologia in Mindanao (ADTM).
